Rudy Guiliani's "Big State" strategy in 08 was worse.

I read that as Norse campaign. For some reason.

Apparently there have been only two campaigns in the history of this country.

SnakeLee: Rudy Guiliani's "Big State" strategy in 08 was worse.

Yeah running for President of Florida and then only getting what, 11%? That's worse.

Relatively Obscure: Fred Thompson. Guiliani.

Fred Thompson, definitely

If you could call that a "campaign". It was more of a kamikaze mission.

Newt's not done milking this. He's still entitled to public funding.

2012-04-23 10:03:13 AM
That's because Newt isn't really running. He's just an AW looking to keep his media profile up and thus the potential of future profits.

What about that chick that ran on the "I'm not a witch" platform?

I thought his positions on race, child labor and lunar exploration were spot on.

I found his horrific vision of an atheist secular socialist state that is also somehow dominated by Sharia Islam quite compelling.

I really do believe that somewhere in the middle of his campaign he was actually surprised at how well he was doing himself. But true to Gingrich form, he let it go to his already inflated head. He's now returned to where he always thought he'd be.

Came here for this.

Yeah, nice try.

And putting aside my snark for a moment, what does it really matter? We're wasting all this time with people trying to prove Romney's cool and can relate to the common person. He and Obama are in a "who's more down?" pissing match. Is that really how we want to elect someone?

Granted, Romney's unrelenting, unconvincing and feeble attempts to look cool and be your friend are driving that focus. But gee wouldn't it be nice if we could get that focus off the candidates' personalities.

Romney's never going to beat Obama on personality or charisma. And in a perfect world we wouldn't be electing people because of those traits. But it's not a perfect world. So he should abandon this "argument" that he can't possibly win and shouldn't be a factor in the first place.

2012-04-23 10:49:58 AM
No way.

It'd have to be that woman Scott Brown beat. You're running for Senator of Massachusetts, lady. Learn who's on the damn Red Sawx.

Cynthia McKinney is outraged that a white man won this title. She will now run for congress to prove she is better at being bad than Newt.

Given he successfully managed to split the tard vote to prevent Santorum winning a ton of delegates across the more conservative states, paving the way for Mitt to easily win I'd say his campaign worked exactly as intended.

You know... I've been thinking about it, and the only reason I can think of to have a wife that is 22 years your junior is because you want to sire more children. That's the only reason it makes sense. You have young wives so you can access their young reproductive organs and make more progeny.

Any other reason is just vanity. I mean, that reason is kinda vain, too, but at least it makes sense from a "my genes must dominate because I am better" perspective.

This. If Gingrich had dropped out a few months earlier, Santorum would have clearly become the "anyone but Romney" candidate and would have mounted a far more serious challenge. I don't think that, in the end, he'd have managed to either take the nomination, or even force a brokered convention, but the nomination would not be settled at this point.

They both had the same problem - neither considered the possibility that they would lose until it was too late. Would Hillary have beaten McCain? Possibly. Obama got bonus points for being black that Hillary might have lost.

Well he can't very well run on the issues. Romney's main selling point was that he could fix the economy but with the economy picking up that line of attack isn't nearly as effective. Obama has everyone in the GOP beat on foreign policy. Obama's healthcare policy is a carbon copy of Romney's. He essentially agrees with Obama on national security/privacy issues. Wedge issues like abortion and immigration have been settled by party lines long ago. Then of course any policy issue that Romney brings up can also bring up a potentinal flip-flop which hurts him even more.

Personal charisma and emotional voters are pretty much the only thing left. With the amount of money involved, the PACs, and the lack of a compelling policy issue between them this campaign season is going to be chock-filled with personal attacks.

With most of his staff gone and his campaign in turmoil, what did Newt do? Spend it up. On the campaign trail? Please. No, while Newt's presidential campaign was hemorrhaging money, it was paying its staff exorbitant sums. So much so the Federal Election Commission demanded the campaign disclose why "nearly $1 million was paid to the candidate, staff and a small group of fundraising consultants for questionable reimbursements," The Washington Times reported. Newt alone hauled in $88,000 in just one month.

Pay yourself with campaign money? Brilliant!
