Someone was doing this in Carkeek Park in Seattle a few years ago. Well-hidden panjii pits made with 2x6 boards and the big 20 penny nails that had been sharpened on a grinder. Several people got hurt pretty bad by stepping in the holes. They never did catch the guy.

Whenever someone says "Think of the kids!", I immediately understand that they are appealing to emotion, and they don't have a substantive opinion based upon logic and/or reason.

And I say that as a parent.

In these cases, the cops and kids parents should have told the kids they had killed someone, and tell them they're arrested for murder, and will face the death penalty. Let them freak the fark out, and tell them when sufficient time has passed. Probably the next day. One night in jail, facing that, they'll never do it again. Just make sure they're on suicide watch.
