It's especially sad because it used to be the opposite. The further North you went in Korea, the taller people got on average, due to Manchu admixture. The South Koreans of Northern descent are taller than other South Koreans.

I live in South Korea, and it's a great place. But if you travel around Asia, you'll see lot of people under 5 feet. Little protein and calcium in childhood makes for tiny people.

/Just be careful to never get involved in a land war in Asia.

Being fat does not work that way.
In the US, the poorer you are - the more likely that you're fat.

Malnourishment and obesity can occur at the same time.

The NK citizen probably eats what would be tantamount to local, organic, unprocessed food - which would be the holy grail of foodies in the US. Plus, they engage in back-breaking farming (exercise).

The leader probably eats western treats and gets fat.

So while North Koreans have been getting shorter, South Koreans have been getting taller.
