one hit wonders?

The Knack were amazing -- Good Girls Don't is a good example of a second toon that rocked more than My Sharona

The Divinyls -- "All the Boys in Town" was release years before "I touch myself" -- clearly ITM is an amazing song, but they got a lot of airplay earlier than that song.

Deee-Lite -- their first two albumns -- not a bad song on them. put the two on at a party, random play, and watch what happens.

Non Blondes - 'What's Up?'

God I hated that.

I've only ever heard of one of these so-called one hit wonders, which is surprising considering it's NME. I wasn't expecting to know any of them.

I would have given my left nut to be the meat in a Lady Miss Kier/Christina Amphlett sandwich back when those songs came out.

\would also accept Cathy Dennis and her spandex as a sub for Amphlett

I will give the list credit that I haven't seen all of these entries a million times before.

/kudos to mentioning AR Kane as well, even if they're much better than MARRS

The only song on that list that I liked was the New Radicals one.

Bran Van 3000's first album is amazing. Drinking In L.A. might have been the only "hit" (and it was only a hit in very few places), but the album as a whole is in my top 30 favorites of all time

'Whats Up' was my MTV live video debut....I am so ashamed...

A lot of those aren't really one-hit-wonders, and the list completely missed a few of the most notorious:

Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come on Eileen
Tomy Tutone - 867-5309(Jenny)
A-ha - Take on Me
Los Del Rio - Macarena
Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry, Be Happy

A one hit wonder has to be a real hit, and half the stuff on the list were just on the charts.

enh, I knew half of them, and the ones I knew were pretty mainstream.

Hell yes.

What's more fun though is predicting which current songs will be one hit wonders. "Pumped Up Kicks" is my shoe-in pick.

If I had a dollar for every time I saw a stripper dance to that song I'd probably take all those dollars and go see some more strippers.

I actually really farking love Whale's "Hobo Humping Slobo Babe".

No longer available on youtube in Canada except for the time Beavis and Buttheard reviewed it.

This is a NME list so I am assuming these were "hits" in England.

It was the soundtrack to my 13 year old dating ritual. I still love playing/singing it with an acoustic.

Glad to see "Music Sounds Better"...on the list. That said, a friend of mine (who works at DNA Lounge) had a rather, um, amusing (at least in retrospect) encounter with Alan Braxe a few months ago.

//Yes, he really did piss on the stage. There were multiple witnesses...

Ah, but a one-hit wonder is truly subjective. I mean, what charts are you using? Is a Norwegian band lika A-ha really a one-hit wonder if they had multiple #1 hits in Norway? Is a country singer that crosses over for one #1 hit a "one-hit wonder?" Is Billy Ray Cyrus a one hit wonder because you only know one song of his, even if he's topped the country charts with other songs? Or is Garth Brooks a one hit wonder because he only got one song into the pop charts, even though it was from that Chris Gaines project that everyone hates so much? Does Weezer qualify as a one-hit wonder, even though everyone has known about them since the mid-90s?

Agreed, much love and respect to that album and song. Also of note, that song is track 1 on the soundtrack to the movie Playing By Heart, one of my top ten soundtracks of all time.

I don't know if it ever went Gold or Platinum but Sir Mix a Lot's Swass had to have been the most traded and recorded tape in my elementary/middle school.

Man, I bought that Whitetown CD because of Your Woman. That was a disappointment, just really boring "arty" synth pop.

Totally forgot about Oran Juice Jones, I liked that song.

A few more for consideration...

Timex Social Club - Rumors (The Rain reminded me of this one)
Newcleus - Jam On It
Baltimora - Tarzan Boy
Aldo Nova - Fantasy
David and David - Welcome to the Boomtown
Dream Academy - Life in a Northern Town
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax
Timbuk 3 - The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades
Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me

Why, yes, I am a product of the 80s.

The English Major: Romeo Void--Never Say Never

I would have gone with "A Girl in Trouble".
