The Sahara is the world's largest hot desert and second largest desert, after Antarctica. At over 9,400,000 square kilometres (3,600,000 sq mi), it covers most of Northern Africa, making it almost as large as China or the United States.

Despite what Sarah Palin seems to think, Africa isn't a country; saying a *continent* is bigger than many *countries* is a rather poor comparison, and it seems to demonstrate the "immappancy" the author is complaining about, rather than countering it. Further, what does land area have to do with anything? Population, productivity, etc, are far more important measures of a country's ability to impact the world, or be impacted by it.

We should colonize it. With private 3D printers or something.

Much cooler than the map is the wiki for continents by area and population.

Although Africa is only a little bigger than North America, it has almost twice as many people.

Yeah, and it's just a farked up now as it was then for using a map projection that doesn't preserve area.

Starry Heavens: How did China (9.60 million km2) get to be bigger than the US (9.63 million km2)?

Depends on which measurements you use. There is some difference in how you tally the size but say you're going by the CIA guidebook then the US is most certainly larger.

Came to post something along the lines of ``Africa is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean you may think it's a long walk down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to Africa. Listen...''

But I see that a different headline already stole it.

That's all great, but the image's chart has the following list...

1. Russia: 17,098,242
2. Canada: 9,984,670
3: China: 9,596,961
4: United States: 9,629,091

Seriously, W.T.F.

But how many cricket bats long is it? If we turned it into string, how many times will that string go to the moon and back? How many kittens can play adorably with that string simultaneously? Any fellow Farkers know the sums on this?

Soo... where the hell is Scandinavia/Iceland/Greenland on this mappy thing? They ran out of room so easier to pretend they're not part of Europe?
