A former flight student of a municipal airport in South Los Angeles tried to steal a plane at gunpoint on Friday, but was arrested when deputies were alerted.
.
.
.
Since the back part of the plane was still secured to the tarmac, he could not take off.

The airplane was lurching and bucking against the chain.

I assume he wasn't a very good flight student.

This guy doesn't deserve to be charged with a crime that sounds as badass as "aircraft piracy."

He missed a great opportunity to rev up the engines, lean out the window, and shoot out the chains securing the plane before taking off into the sunset.

Kids today have no finesse.

It's not your fault. It's the image size limit (250kb) that makes posting any gif difficult.

I suppose the keys to the chains and the keys to the planes are not the same, or stored in the same place. Is this the case?

The police should have untied it for him. An air pursuit with an F-15 takedown would have been awesome use of tax dollars.

I've never seen chains used as tie-downs for small private planes, but I guess it might need to be done differently in Compton.

Where the fark did he think he was going to go anyway? With the amount of helicopters in LA he surely would have been spotted and followed in his slow-ass plane.

Ever notice that the shoplifting of books are lowest in cities with the highest number of libraries per capita? If Los Angeles, Compton in particular, invested in more public use aircraft this never would have happened. But let me guess -- the FAA funds were diverted to air traffic controller pensions and 9/11 survivor funds. The FAA is a joke and they deserve none of our federal tax monies.

I was a victim of the racial divide between those that have private planes and those that do not. I've logged more simulator hours and flown more shorties than your average well-qualified Navy pilot. And what did the authorities do when I tried to fly my stolen Cessna in formation with the Blue Angels? They shot me down over Lake Washington. The aerial elite does not want competition from more qualified civilian aerators. And they wonder why incidences of laser pointer conflagration are going through the roof.

OCCUPY THE SKY.

It belongs to all of us!

A Cessna 152? Come on fellow at least try to steal something better than an old basic trainer that has not even been made for almost 30 years. This is almost petty larceny territory. Weren't there some SR22s or a Corvalis around if you needed a fixed gear airplane?

Probably the only thing he thought he was qualified and capable to fly. Just think if he has stolen a jet. His joy ride would have been about two miles. His two foot joy ride doesn't sound like much fun either. His street cred in jail will be like a car thief that gets busted, because he didn't know how to release the emergency brake - awkward.

Lots of airports use chains - uses a two hook method to keep it snug. No locks I have seen though...
