The Donut Vault, if you can get in before they run out, it's amazing

I grew up on Krispy Kreme. Truly, there is no other. Yes, I've had the abomination of a Dunkin Donuts. Honestly though, give me good bagel, sesame or poppy please, and a schmear.

When you see this sign lit up, it means a sugar rush is imminent.

Any other time, their doughnuts are inedible. But fresh out of the ovens, hot damn!

That makes me want to eat donuts

I prefer potato donuts.

The underlying Krispy Kreme donut is pretty good. Unfortunately they slather it in such a massive layer of double-nuclear sugar that eating a dozen can induce diabetes not only in yourself but in anyone within 20 yards or so and whatever taste the donut has is almost completely lost in the sugar tsunami. I think they could save costs and hassle by making donuts out of the glaze, skip the dough, I doubt anyone would notice.

Voodoo doughnuts are really good. Top Pot in Seattle is better.

I'm from Portland, have eaten Voodoo Donuts several times, and completely agree with this statement. I actually prefer Krispy Kreme's donuts.

Round Rock Donuts. all others are garbage.

My vote is for the Doughnut Plant. The boyfriend and I have eaten there many times. I'm surprised neither of us have diabetes and weigh a kilo each.

FTFA: Doughnut Plant NYC

Saw Doughnut Plant on a Food Network program and decided to give it a try the next time I was in Manhattan.

So I went and had the creme brulee doughnut because it sounded creative. After eating it, I felt ripped off paying $3.00 for what is essentially a miniature Boston Cream doughnut that somebody took a blowtorch to for about 10 seconds. Not worth the hype. The owner must be smirking all the way to the bank.

As a previous farker has mentioned, Krispy Kreme doughnuts are awesome when they are hot and fresh, but not so much when they aren't ( a parallel to McDonald's fries could be drawn here...)

Also, Sesame Donuts in Beaverton >>> Voodoo Donuts, IMHO.

/ I miss living up there

I've been known to stop in when there's no line of tourists. Mrs. detroitdoesntsuckthatbad likes the Miami Viceberry, I'm a fan of the cream filled ones but they're not life changing, they're a freaking donut.

Donut Plant in NYC was the best I've ever had.
My town of Atlanta's Sublime Donuts paled in comparison.
Krispy Kremes are kinda gross. Donuts shouldn't be slimy.

Not really.

Some of their donuts are great, some are only so-so. They just have great word of mouth advertising.

Farking this. I love Portland, but Voodoo is a damn disgrace. A line of hipsters out the door being pestered by another line of homeless people for spare change. It makes the oyster bar right around the corner damn near impossible to get to, and it is worth the trip.

2012-04-22 06:25:21 PM
Best donuts are from the regional chain The Donut Bank in southern Indiana. That stuff is damn good. Puts Krispy Kremes to shame..

As long as you don't say you've never eaten at Cafe Yumm, you're fine in my book.

I'be read comment after comment on Fark about how great Voodoo Donuts is, with their maple bacon donuts and what not, and then I saw the shop on one of those Food Network shows. I was like, uh... a nasty little storefront with stale-looking donuts in display cases? Run by wanna-be hobos? Yeah, I'll stick to my local donuts shop, thanks.

Voodoo's got a good gimmick going and the original store's a lot of fun, but when you actually taste one...

If anyone is ever up in the Utica/ Rome area, Dippin' Donuts are pretty damned good. The guy opened a few stores when he felt that Dunkin' Donuts was going downhill. They're not super fancy, or deluxe, but they are a wonderful alternative to chain breakfast. Good donuts, excellent coffee, and they cook the eggs for their breakfast sandwiches to order.

/sadly, they stopped making the cherry cake donut. Me and my fat miss it so.

2012-04-22 06:38:40 PM
And I've had Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Keener, lovely little donuts novelties from a locally owned donuts shop, and donuts from the display case at 7/11. They're all exactly the same. It's a farkin' donut, its fried dough topped with sugar. It's not meant to be gourmet, or special, or some kind of hipster status symbol.

I'd rather have a plain bagels with cream cheese anyway.

Haven't been to the place in Austin, but Hypnotic Donuts in Dallas is amazing. My favorite is the Canadian Health Care, a maple-glazed donut with bacon.

Wondered if Top Pot would make the list and lo and behold. However, that Strawberries & Cream donut from that place in Atlanta looks amazing.

Bellingham WA, Rocket Donuts. They make everything from scratch and they don't use too much sugar. Damn fine muffins too.

Palo Alto, Ricks Donuts on Middlefield. Same sort of thing but the hairy old fat dude running the place has been doing it since he was a kid, and you can get a donut a foot in diameter. Huge Fritters too.

List fails without O'doodle Doo's in Suffolk, VA (outside Norfolk).

Sadly, my two favorite doughnut places around my area closed. The chain, Mr Donut, closed years ago, while the locally owned shop, Mallo's only closed about a year ago. I haven't had anything as good as from either place, ever. Prefer Dunkin Donuts over Krispy Kreme

St louis style donuts are truly different and great. Right between too soft melty krispy kreams and too dense cake donuts. Awesome. Feasting on Asphalt covered it well.

Did I read wrong or did they say "donut shop" instead of " donut stop" ? If so for shame.

I live right next door to peter pan donuts, they're the best hands down. Donut plant is good, but peter pan is great

You know why maple bacon donuts are touted as the best donuts? Because people love bacon, and they love maple syrup. You know what's delicious? A stack of pancakes with maple syrup and a side of thick cut bacon. You know what's kind of gross? A donut. Topped with a hardened maple-flavored glaze and overcooked bacon. But for whatever reason Farkers apparently think that's the epitome of breakfast food.

Eh, the doughnuts are good but the kolaches are pure shiat. Don't know how they make them inflated like a balloon. The Kolache Factory or Morning's are better for kolaches.

2012-04-22 07:08:58 PM
Good. Voodoo Doughnuts is entirely overrated.
