(SlashFilm)   The "Lobo" character works on the page precisely because of the way in which he satirized the serious superhero trends of the mid to late '80s. Will the film studios have the balls to use him in a similar manner?   (slashfilm.com) divider line 108

We're done here.

/DC will make it a lame, humorless, generic action movie that will bomb at the box office, and their ineptitude will convince them that only Superman and Batman are worth developing into movies. Same as it ever was.

They need to leave Superman alone. The time has come and long gone for pop culture to embrace that overgrown Boy Scout.

Meh.
My favorite moments with Lobo were when he was pissing off the Justice League and the like. Him and a teenage girl? Going after a number misc. creatures who pose a threat to the world?

I already saw Hellboy. And Ghost Rider. And Constantine. And Green Lantern. And Elektra. And TMNT.

No thanks. Try again.

Wtf are "serious superhero trends of the mid to late 1980's" and why should they be mainstream audience material in 2014?

Call me when they make a live-action version of The Badger, Larry. I'd love to meet the actor that could carry off that role.

I do not know Lobo, so I'm not invested in this. But I did read the (probably fake) Deadpool script that floated around a while back. Now THAT I want to see. I'd even go to the theater for it, and I haven't gone to one in years. Or ever read a Deadpool comic.

On mobile so can't find and link said script.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: Wtf are "serious superhero trends of the mid to late 1980's" and why should they be mainstream audience material in 2014?

I think it's referring to Punisher and Ghost Rider and the like. I could be wrong. No idea how'd it apply to modern audiences though.

Well, the whole "Iron Age" seems to be the only approach that actually works for DC properties, considering the success of Batman compared to Superman/Green Lantern.

(Never mind that "making fun of superheroes" seems to require some violent pomo deconstructionist BS like Super/Kickass/Defendor nowadays. I blame Hipsters.)

Let's look at few things FTA:
seven-foot tall, blue-skinned, indestructible and heavily muscled anti-hero

seven foot tall- I was thinking 6'8" max but I can deal with 7'

blue skinned- Any and every comic or cartoon appearance I've ever read / seen depicts Lobo as having white skin

indestructible and heavily muscled anti-hero- Darn near spot on. Now that Dave Batista has quit MMA, throw him into a gym, let him get huge again and break out the white body paint!

They should have tarantino direct it. I think he can get the violence just about right. DCAU did Lobo right for a cartoon version, but a live action movie needs to be ultra violent, ultra crass. R rating about.

Trebuchet-Farker: If only they'd make the Paramilitary Christmas Special...

If they could write it 1/2 as true to the character as this is, I'd be surprised. I can very easily see the screenwriter throwing out the satire for more GrimDark.

A few more I'd like to see would be "The Badger", "Ambush Bug", and "The Helm". But I know that I'm destined to live in disappointment.

Considering the superhero parody movie is now a cliche, I don't think it would make a difference.

Team him up with Starfire, have it be tits, blood and horrible, horrible boob jokes. That's the only way I could see that movie working. Also I want him to eat one of the Guardians of Oa.

Back in the day this guy was considered a ripoff of the Badger character and is prolly the closest we'll ever see to a schizophrenic PTSD veteran and martial artist that can talk to and understand animals who has among his multiple personalities a guy that dresses up in a costume and beats up muggers. Good luck shoehorning in Ham the weather wizard, the IBOB, Yak and Yeti and any other supernatural aspects

They'd have to retcon him quite a bit. No more Viet Nam veteran the youngest he could possibly be is in his late 50's by now. PTSD to the point of imagining talking animals and split personality disorder ?

Yeah, not to mention super violent fetishist movies like Megamind, Super Ex-Girlfriend, Superhero Movie, and Dr Horrible.

Guy Ritchie would have been good as well. Too back he walked on the project.

WB just set Brad Peyton, whose last two films were Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, to rewrite and direct Lobo.

No, and that's not what American audiences want from their entertainment anyway. They want the studio ending to I am Legend. They want the version of The Office where Michael Scott gets to live happily ever after. They want Kardashians.

fusillade762: Who the fark thought this was a good fit for "Lobo"???

Wow. I'm trying to think of DC properties better to adapt than Lobo. My list includes nearly everything. You could do a Lex Luthor movie based on the Black Ring and Lex Luthor, Man of Steel for dark comedy. You could do a Suicide Squad movie and go for something dark or comedic or both. You could do a freaking Black Canary movie and it would sell better.

But you can't compete with Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man with Lobo. Not even remotely equivalent.

you are a puppet: where Michael Scott gets to live happily ever after.

you've got to say, that was a good joke to go out on

Also came for this, especially since I don't read comic books and never heard of this Lobo. I seriously thought it was a Sheriff Lobo movie, since Hollywood has bastardized everything else from my childhood with a feature film.

When are they gonna make a damn Booster Gold movie?

Of course the comics already screwed him over by making him Canadian.

spcMike: When are they gonna make a damn Booster Gold movie?

Booster Gold isn't strong enough to be a stand alone film. It'd be an awesome animated show, especially if they had him continually cycle through the different DC animated properties, having him show up in an episode of the 60's Batman cartoon in one week, Bruce Timm superman the next, super-friends the next etc etc. You need to see the effect of his deeds on a greater universe, otherwise the time travel aspect of his character is just another random origin story.

So from this thread, they should just make a 52 webseries/Miniseries.

The pitch meetings/script reviews for this project should be a reality TV show. Can you imagine what those must have been like?

"OK, so another character trait, Lobo had a radio receiver implanted into his brain and forced a DJ to play his favorite song, 'I Killed My Folks' 24 hours a day."
"Who sings that song?"
"No one, it's just a fictional title the writers at DC made up."
"We could get Nickleback to cover it for the soundtrack. They'll do anything. See about acquiring the rights."
"No, listen to me, the song doesn't...."
"Is there a guitar solo in the song? We could have Lobo shred on a space guitar in a space bar."
"What's a space guitar?"
"I don't know, it has something weird about it. Two necks maybe."
"Those already exist, and I keep telling you..."
"Ooh, I know, Nickleback could be the house band in the space bar! Cameo!"

2012-04-22 08:03:43 PM
My favorite moment at the Lobo was when that guy wearing the beer hat said to Dan, "How do you and your fat wife like my new hat?" Then Rosie approved a suckerpunch.

I just watched Hulk Vs. Thor/Wolverine again. It makes me sad that Marvel can't do Deadpool. His few lines in Hulk were great.
