ChubbyTiger: Garlic and honey are two biggies that you wouldn't expect.

Why is it a surprise? Garlic is native to China.

Ah yes. The lost art of nude human butchery.

Not that they have/use garlic, but that we import so much of it.

down in the Gulf, prior to BP you could get Red Snapper, Scarlett Snapper, Crimson Snapper, and other words for red. Each being a different type of snapper, and only an expert could hope to tell them appart, but the non RED snappers carry a much higher price, even though I bet they taste the same.

much like ANGUS means the cow has some black fur.
and the Japanese Kobe standard means the beef has more than 80% fat.
American Kobe means it is at least partially deceneded from a Japanese cow.
is this like saying you need to be at least 1/8th Native to recieve special benifits?
it's just a marketing campaign.

I submitted this just because I could make a headline with rapeseed in it. I'm surprised at the number of people claiming they don't know what it is. Gosh!

/ya really

Rik01: China has been a problem nearly from the beginning when companies turned to them for cheap products. The People's Republic policy has been to basically screw everyone as much as they could, until they got caught.

LOL wut. You honestly think they stop?

Oznog: sinanju: My understanding is there are two kinds of Rapeseed. The kind you eat -- the kind Americans call Canola -- and an inedible industrial lube version. Clearly one has to keep them apart.

It starts as the same oil, but refinement for industrial purposes uses non-food-safe chemicals, specifically aniline.
.

No, Canola comes from specific varieties developed to have low (less than 2%) erucic acid. Sinanju was right that the two types need to be kept apart. Since the plants can interbreed and produce oil with intermediate erucic acid levels, there are minimum distances required between fields of the two types.

Interesting considering that a few articles away from this one, is a list of ordinary people who became heroes, and one of them came up with... "a combination of rapeseed and olive oils, was given to Lorenzo, and remarkably, the heinous progress of the disease seemed to stop."

The My Little Pony Killer: But don't forget, labeling pink slime will cut into our profit margin (guess we can't afford a good enough marketing team) so you'll just have to guess when it comes to that. LOL!

This from a moran who claimed hot dogs were all made from high quality meat....

Except, of course, in China, where anything goes [into the food they ship to the rest of the world], I guess...

That isn't the Japanese kobe standard. There are dietary requirements on the cow, breed requirements, and birth location requirements.

American kobe doesn't even mean the same breed. There are no laws about what you want to name your beef.the law only requires it meets the standard for beef in general.

I could buy ground beef from Gordon food service and sell burgers from it as kobe beef burgers, legally.

Rich Cream: rape

a plant, Brassica napus, of the mustard family, whose leaves are used for food for hogs, sheep, etc., and whose seeds yield rape oil.

I think that I can assure everyone here (in the US) that they have never had Kobe beef. I can say this because no Kobe beef is exported from Japan. None.

Although it's starting to change as they get richer, the scary thing about China is apparently they DO send us the good stuff...

Yup. That said, I apply two shiats of value to location. So if anyone had a decent breed and fed it right it'd be kobe in my opinion.

China's the main supplier of garlic for the whole world. Probably has been for a few centuries.

Here's to hoping I'm not gonna die as I cook with this regularly:
Yors Rapeseed Oil

The fields are in bloom right now and are bright yellow and absolutely gorgeous. My SO told me that his father had him convinced, as a child, that the fields were actually fish finger(stick) fields.

Pro Tip: Don't wear yellow in places where they grow rapeseed when the fields are in bloom. You'll be covered in bugs in seconds.

My wife and I were on vacation in Scotland during that time of year and she had a yellow coat and discovered that the hard way. Luckily, she had other warm things to wear.

I can personally confirm that this food fraud thing is real.

It happened just two weeks ago. My son has a severe corn allergy, including corn syrups. So we buy the super expensive pure maple syrup for his breakfasts. I tried switching to Kroger's "Private Selection" Dark Amber Maple Syrup, which claims to be "Grade A 100% Pure". Boom, my son's whole body lit up red with hives.

Of course it may just be a coincidence, totally unrelated to the fact that "maple syrup" sells for 100 times more than corn syrup.

In any case, I have the bottle right here, anyone know where I can get it tested for corn content?

Isn't that the album with that song Stigmata on it?
