Fake vodkas in particular have made the news in recent months

Only buy from reputable vodak vendors.

2012-04-22 12:14:20 PM
But don't forget, labeling pink slime will cut into our profit margin (guess we can't afford a good enough marketing team) so you'll just have to guess when it comes to that. LOL!

What a reputable vodak vendor might look like.

Yes, I had a free shot there this very morning.
They have free tastings on Sunday mornings.

You know, it kinda makes you wonder, just HOW that seed got the name it has today.

Seriously. Imagination is a terrible thing in this case

Did anyone still think the labels on food were telling the truth? I've always considered those to be loose suggestions at best. It was a good idea that got hammered down and made irrelevant by greed. Like the Constitution. If it's legal to charge me $50 for an aspirin while I bleed to death, I should expect the people who sell me food to be laughing behind my back.

Just a point of parliamentary procedure here, but if you're bleeding to death and someone gives you an aspirin, start crawling away from them. You'll turn out better in the end.

Canola stands for CANanian Oil, Low Acid. Regular rapeseed oil has too much erucic acid in it to be edible. The variety used for canola oil is engineered (in the old school sense) to have low acid so that it's edible.

It's an old name but modern producers agreed with you that the name (and taste) were off-putting and so they bred a new cultivar that tastes better and rebranded it in the 70s as "Canadian oil, low acid" (canola).

Google tells me that the "rape" in "rapeseed" comes from "turnip", because the Latin for "turnip" is "rapa".

/you said "turnip" twice.

rape

a plant, Brassica napus, of the mustard family, whose leaves are used for food for hogs, sheep, etc., and whose seeds yield rape oil.

My understanding is there are two kinds of Rapeseed. The kind you eat -- the kind Americans call Canola -- and an inedible industrial lube version. Clearly one has to keep them apart.

Just another reason to buy local when it comes to food. We make so much food in this country, why rely on imports?

Just go to the farm down the street where they grow and process all the food products that you need right there in front of you. Duh.

The honey issue something to be aware of the facts. This is pretty good for starters - from the globe and mail

Link

- "Dilution is another issue. According to Grace Pundyk, author of The Honey Trail, Chinese manufacturers will inject a type of honey with litres of water, heat it, pass it through an ultrafine ceramic or carbon filter, and then distill it into syrup. While it eradicates impurities such as antibiotics, it also denies honey of its essence."

I don't trust nor do I purchase the big corporate "honey".

That's what gets me. The companies get caught (how can you do business and not expect that people will eventually lean about the manufacturing process?).

THEN, after any shadyness is discovered, they complain that if they don't do it this way that they'll go out of business.

Thanks guys, I'm happy to pay a bit more for a product to make sure it's not poisoning me because some exec wanted to add a few percent extra to the copmany's revenue.

/really wish there was a law that required executives and BoD members of food companies, pharmaceuticals, etc. to publicly report how much of their own product they consume per quarter.
//I think a LOT of folks would be surprised...

And then you have those senators, representatives and judges who think that any law that governs commerce is unconstitutional.

Mislabeling or fraud issues aside, you probably deserve what you get if you are going to eat anything from China. Aint nothing good coming out of there.

Except some of their teas like Tie Guanyin tea. I love me that variety.

Responsibility - corporate and personal- bailed years ago. It's so very sad that we as a society allowed it to get to the point where it is actually killing people. Remember all those Chinese babies with melamine poisoning from baby formula?

When is profit worth a baby's life? Disgusting.

Think that vodka you are drinking is made from potatoes? Think again! Most hard liquor is "fake.". There are some exceptions, such as scotch, but the majority of hard liquors (such as gin, vodka, etc.) are merely watered down, flavored neutral grain spirits. It is much cheaper to manufacture than to use traditional methods.
