I know counting on the cognitive dissonance of the American "conservative" is usually a pathway to political power and easy cash, but we're still in the "No, I *never* voted for Bush - he was no True Conservative" stage for them.

FDR lost the 1920 election as the vice-presidential nominee with James N. Cox to Warren G. Harding.  He won in a landslide election 12 years later, in 1932, defeating Hoover.

And this is why I love Fark. Nice pop culture reference.

This story is pretty funny stuff too. At this point it's obvious to any but the blind that Mitt's campaign has a slim-to-none chance and it's beginning to look like this might be causing Mittens to have a hard time finding anyone who even wants to be his Veep pick by this point.

Which means he may end going with somebody laughably inappropriate for the gig.

/Not Palin levels of bad, of course, that kind of derpstorm only comes along once in a generation (or so I hope).

I think Cheney was the outlier since most all other VPs in the past 30 years were useless. I bet everyone's just trying to dodge that spot so they can be promised the Secretary of State position. Hillary was pretty smart to do it four years ago.

Would anyone seriously consider putting another Bush on the ballot, even if he wanted it? I would put Palin on it first.

But I definitely could see anyone angling for a presidential run in 2016 avoiding being Romeny's VP candidate. The odds would appear a lot better then (no incubent advantage and hopefully the Republican Party pulling back from the crazies) than for Romney to get elected now and 2016 and govern without harming your reputation, then get elected as President in 2020.

I have to think that is the party's plan for 2016. They go full crazy with the pandering this year, then back off in 2016 to seem reasonable to the middle, hoping the crazies stay in their pockets.

Romney needs Pennsylvania to get to 270

That would force Obama to take both Ohio and Fla.

2012-04-22 01:30:49 PM

The Republicans are going to lose the General Election this year and it may even be a landslide for Obama. The Republicans can thank the Tea Party for making the Primaries a joke and making their nominees run against themselves because the Tea Party had to be pandered to.

Why would Jeb Bush want to run on a losing ticket? Unlike John Kerry, Mitt Romney is a bona fide flip flopper, and that's only one of the things that will lose him the election.

I don't see Bush wanting to be 2nd fiddle to anyone.

Rubio is a possibility but I think Romney can get Fla without him.
And the Latinos in the west aren't going to jump on the bandwagon just because Rubio is on the ticket.
The crazies in Arizona have them scared of the GOP.

Jeb would be a whole lot better than his brother was. A few year ago when Florida was in a state of emergency after a few concurrent hurricanes, I marveled at how intelligent and articulate this man was. How the hell did we get stuck with his half-witted brother?

Isn't Haley herself pretty toxic right now? I read that she has some corruption issues going on there. While the far right might be able to dismiss the "lamestream media" or "liberal attacks," most people would look at her record and run for the hills. Geez, even if Palin had two brain cells, most people would have still shown concern over her ethics.

Here's why I've said all along that Rubio is at the top of the VP list. He's a young rising star in the GOP. He's young, good looking and charismatic enough to counter the perception of Mitt as being a stuffed shirt, and his immigrant (parent) story will be spun into an 'American dream success story' to counter Mitt's patrician persona. He's Hispanic and from Florida. Mitt thinks Marco will help him carry FL. Mitt thinks Marco will help him carry Latinos. Hispanic and Latino don't necessarily mean the same thing, though, and second generation Miami Cubans aren't the same as first generation Arizona Mexicans or Guatemalans. But the idea is that they can lump all hispano-Latinos into one homogenous group and bring them into the GOP tent by way of Rubio. It also lets the GOP counter claims of racism by doing what they always do: saying it's the Dems who are the real racists. "Look'" they'll say, "we have a Latino on our ticket, our VP candidate is (light) brown, your VP is just another rich old white guy! Who's the real racist now, huh?" Rubio has just enough nationwide name recognition that it won't be a stretch to sell him to the rest of the country. He's not a completely unknown factor like Palin was. But he has Tea Party cred, which Mitt severely needs. Rubio is also strongly anti-abortion, another area where Mitt's flip-flopping has left him vulnerable to attack from the base. Last month, during the whole War on Religion" contraceptive brouhaha, it was Rubio that the party chose to present legislation that would let employers get around Obama's implementation of contraceptive coverage. Now he (and by extension, Mitt) can point to how they're fighting back against the President on pro-life issues. The teabaggers can now feel safe voting for Mitt, knowing they're really voting for a real conservative. And they're totally not racist now.

And, magically, they won't think that anymore when Rubio is on the ticket and he's the only hope they have of having any conservative anywhere near the White House.

propasaurus: Here's why I've said all along that Rubio is at the top of the VP list.

Its also a good reason for him to keep his powder dry. Mitt is a sinking ship and Obama is going to throw a billion dollars of campaign funding at making sure he's seen as the least popular man alive. No one wants to inherit that legacy.

...But Obama has a problem. His VP is not viable for 2016, which will force the Democrats into a power struggle. Meanwhile the public will have had eight years to get fed up with democrats.

So if your GOP its a great moment to run.
Almost too good, because I think its sapped this cycles list of candidates.
2016 is going to be a repeat of what 2008 was but in the Republicans favor.
Right now we are replaying 2004 in the democrats favor and Mitt is the Republican version of Kerry.

No one wants to be... uh... whoever the dude was that ran with Kerry.
