The entire game is a play stoppage, when your marquee matchups features a grand total if points any football could score from 35 yards out then its just dull.

And clearing the ball and kicking it away counts as play stoppage as well, its like an unorganized game of 10 year olds playing kickball.

Three hours of play stoppage and 45 minutes of play.

Versus five minutes of play and 1.5 hours of walking.

Whats funny is that you keep biatching about the breaks in football but I can be at a bar go play a game of pool or even golden tee then come back to a 0-0 game or maybe 1-1 game, ohhhhhh I missed a lot of excitement there........

The game is 90+minutes of boredom, I find cricket more exciting, hell if they were to play rugby on ESPN it would be rated higher than soccer games.

I'll take football (soccer) over NFL, NBA, and MLB any day, The game is usually played in under two hours, the others 4 hours. The leagues have relegation. After they play all the regular season games if your team is one of the bottom three teams you drop down to the lower division. Imagine if the NFL did that the Indianapolis Colts would have been relegated.

A couple of posts above there was someone lauding the fact that football (soccer) only took 2 hours.

Sounds to me that's more in line with the ADD crowd.

You couldn't be a fan of NASCAR with ADD. It can take hours and there really isn't much in the way of changing action.

There is a reason its quick, any longer and people would realize how dull the game was, I will never understand how people can find it exciting when most of the game resembles a kick ball game without bases.

I tried soccer when our coach needed players, after he got another person to play back up goalie, soccer is just not fun, its why mainly kids play it them lose interest later. I did enjoy indoor soccer though, it had actual excitement and this thing called scoring. Soccer may want to look into that.

I love the scoring argument that people always bring up when bashing soccer. Like a football game never ends 7 - 3. thats 1 - ~.5. hell, the generally accepted practice is if you can score 21, you will win. thats 3. so 21 - 14 is 3 - 2.

A 1 - 0 game of baseball is considered a pitching success. a 9 - 3 game of football is a defensive battle.

a bad game of football is just as boring to watch as a bad game of soccer. patriots vs saints is just as fun as Barcelona vs Real Madrid or Chelsea vs Man U.

The difference is that those low scoring games there is good defense to go along with it instead of just kicking the fark out of the ball.

Something exciting happens every nfl game, the same can't be said of soccer.

get off it lol. nothing worth shiat happens when the browns play the jags. also, if you think there is no defense being played in soccer, you either dont watch, or dont know how to defend in a soccer game.

im not trying to convert anyone, but ill tell you a few of the reasons that ive taken to liking soccer. perhaps you can appreciate one or all of them the next time your deutschlander friends suckers you into watching a match.

i like the drama. in almost ever sense of that word. i like that even though a team is up, it can turn around at any moment. i like how the players whine like biatches at the ref. i like how they fall down and cry like biatches while the opposing team insists that he is milking it. i like how they almost fight in big rivalries. this morning watching real vs barca was awesome. i like how fans hate c. ronaldo and how he gives 0 farks.

i like the skill. players like messi are fun to watch. they are doing spinning roundhouses to everyone elses weak leg kicks.

anyway, you get the idea. ill go back to my other argument, its a full year of sports if you enjoy both. i mean what are you gonna watch? baseball? are you an 80 year old man?

ok, so watch jv football. my mom like womens ncaa basketball. takes all kinds to run the world.

as far as tv goes, that is a lame argument. it's televised all of the world and the highest payed athletes in the world play soccer. they do ok. we have decided for some reason to accept that a 60 minute game should take 3.5 hours to allow for ads.

It's not a tv friendliness thing; televised soccer does extremely well throughout Europe, Latin America, and in large parts of Asia.

The difference is that people in other nations grow up playing soccer (football), with strong family/city-based rooting traditions. In the U.S., people grow up playing baseball, football, and/or basketball, with many of the same rooting traditions. You can draw other comparisons based on national attention spans, pace of living, etc., but your average American is not wired correctly to enjoy soccer, nor are they encouraged during childhood to develop that ability. For many people in other countries, the pace and rules of (American) football is too frenetic to comprehend, let alone enjoy.

come on, the falling down is hilarious. and the responses are just as funny. perhaps you are one of those people that thinks athletes should be role models, held to a higher standard.

i am one of those people that realizes that its just a game. it has no allegence to you. do you know that here in new orleans, you can still buy limited edition nfl championship liscense plates for your car. its like 100$. that cracks me up. people are so stupid to think that the team is anything more than a product you are buying. i watch for free and enjoy the GAME. its not a lifestyle choice, its a game that children play.

I hope you don't think soccer and its popularity will last forever, don't forget that not long ago cricket was larger.

I we'll find it funny that the term soccer originated in england in the late 1800s and only went back to calling themselves football after our football became popular in the 70s.

Soccer fans always want to claim america and it will never happen but good luck having that inferiority complex.

The first televised football game was in 1939 between the Eagles and the Dodgers and lasted just over 2:33, whereas NFL games today are typically just under 3 hours. However the game today utilizes far more passing plays and the clock stops on an incomplete pass, so very little time has been added to accommodate commercials.

Well, for commercial broadcasters it's not so good, as the play is open and game-changing moments can happen at any moment. ITV in the UK was criticised for missing a crucial moment in a game in the 2006 World Cup (I think. An important game, anyway). But ITV was also criticised for similar stuff when they had the F1 rights a few years back.

Saw the Chelski-Barca game on ITV the other night. They start their coverage, have a load of ads. More talk of the game. Load of ads. The first half of the game, ad-free. More ads. Brief analysis. Ads. Second half... you get the idea.

Well, to me, it's some sort of weird delusion that some Americans have that American football is fast paced and exciting, and football is boring. To all the Ameritrolls in this thread going on about football being boring; we're comparing a game that has up to 28 people actively playing for (usually, barring extra time) 90-ish minutes that's concluded within 2 hours, versus a game that has 60 minutes of play (that's right, isn't it? 4 15 minute quarters?) that takes up to 3 hours to play... involving how many players? WTF?

And football's slow, and boring? Huh?

Anyway, we have 2 codes of Rugby football for men who like to play with funny shaped balls; and I really like this graphic that highlights how hard Rugby players work for their money as compared to American football players:

news.bbcimg.co.uk

/It's the "average distance covered in a game" that really boggles my mind; I'm surprised American footballers can almost match rugby players in a sprint, given how little work they do during a game.
//Don't think Carl Hayman's ever been involved in dog fighting scandals either.

its the same old case of people not knowing what the like, they like what they know. you are muslim because you were born in yemen, you are an american football fan because you were born in the us. you like Real because you are a royalist in madrid, you like the browns because you suck and live in cleavland.

No, soccer is slow and boring but almost everything else they call football is great, I love rugby and even austrailian rules football, Im still pissed espn doesnt show that anymore on a regular basis, if I want to watch it now I have to buy the sports package.

I never said its fast paced, anywhere, I just said soccer is boring. A kickball game that gets over in 2 hours does not mean its exciting, I would rather watch a defensive stuggle in football taking four hours over any soccer game since they rarely keep my attention, even the ones espn tells me I should love.

You will never change the fact I find soccer completely dull.

You couldnt be more wrong, I have been in bars where guys take sides for rugby or Australian games just because it is entertaining, soccer is just dull to watch though and if thats the only thing on most people will either be talking or surfing the net.
