The incident happened in a ramp area and the plane was not being directed by air traffic controllers,

The Skywest plane was backing out the gate around 8:15 p.m. on Friday when it hit a parked Skywest aircraft with it's left wing, according to FAA spokesman Ian Gregor.

Very well job, Mr. Editing Guy.

Came here to say that. I have had arguments over it's vs. its. Well, okay, it was one argument, but that was one argument too many. And it occurred in a 300-level college writing class.

Oooo-ooo! Flying story time!

I was flying a Piper Cub into South Jersey Regional one summer morning. As I entered the pattern, I could see that other planes were landing to the east on the runway, because of the wind direction (land into the wind) so I headed that way. Piper Cubs don't have an electrical system, thus no radio, so I couldn't announce my intentions. Which is completely legal at that airport, but not at the big airports. There are conventions you follow so as to show your intentions visually.

So I turn onto final, dipping the nose 'cause these old ragwings have lot a parasitic drag to overcome to keep your speed up. Dropping, dropping, watching the beginning of the runway to get the landing just right until it was time to flare and land. As I level out, I look up and see a twin engine aircraft racing down the runway, taking off to the west, coming right at me. With steely resolve, I play chicken with the twin, getting my main gear planted down, and as soon as the plane slows enough, slam the rudder and steer into the grass.

As the twin hurtles past I give him the finger. He was in the wrong. He was taking off with the wind, which is a no-no. You're supposed to take off into the wind. He was too farkin' lazy to taxi down to the correct end of the runway. Probably was screaming in his radio the whole time "little yellow airplane, get out of my way!!!! Christ what an asshole.

It happens. I was flying into San Diego a few years ago and during final approach, the part in San Diego when you can look out the left side of the plane and see into folks apartments, the pilot suddenly gunned the engines and pulled up. "Sorry folks, didn't like the looks of that approach."

I craned my neck to look back as we were turning and there was a 727 that was finishing turning onto the runway in prep for their takeoff. I made a point to thank the pilot after that flight.

There is a calvin and hobbes stripe in which calvin imagines himself as the pilot of passenger plane playing a game of chicken with another passenger plane. He narrowly beats out the other plane but it is a close call. I miss that comic strip. Waterson had such talent.

Embraer / Not in the Air continues its ritual un-prosecuted pre-meditated killing of passengers world wide. From forcing tsunami destroyed countries to buy Skywest planes to get aid, to failing the A380 150% wing-loading test, Embraer builds on its reputation for falling out of the sky. E120, cruise and it "breaks up". Nice. Good planes.

If its not a Boeing, I'm not going.

Not in the Air continues its engineering of murder and mayhem the world over. How many of our sons, daughters mothers and fathers and wives and husbands must be murdered by NOT IN THE AIR before we stop this animal!

There have been recent and still as yet unexplained incidents at cruising altitude in the E195.

See JetBlue E190 emergency landing in NYC:

http://www.youtube.com/v/5d7aZtSOWZE

Concerning an E170 Aitalia crash at an air show in France; a Discovery Channel documentary on this plane indicates that Air France had their best pilot on this plane and that computer was the cause:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0

Boeing planes crash because operators violate the plane. Screw up maintenance. Basically Boeing crashes are from terrorists, people painting over pressure sensors, people flying them into things or massive mechanical failures brought on by horrific neglect or poor maintenance. They can be EXPLAINED.

Not in the Air accidents have a scary high percentage of massive catastrophic failure that cannot be explained.

All I have to say is : B-17, B-24, B-29 and B-52, these planes were built in ways that could soak up gun fire for well over 60 years. They know how to build planes that have more than normal survivability. Embraer. Its not AirPlane, its EmBRAER. Cheap garbage made as cheaply as possible to line the pockets of fat cats and unionized sickos and the safety of the plane is left to be at the EXACT minimums required, and they cheat often at those. Embraer is the culture of death. If you own stock in them, you are a killer. If you work for them, you are a killer.

You are welcome.

Back when I was doing Local from a visual tower it wasn't uncommon to have two airplanes on the runway at the same time. It's just a matter of separation. And small planes on a 10,000 foot runway.

This was a ramp accident, outside the purview of Ground. Best to let their insurance companies talk it over.

2012-04-22 12:52:45 PM
Hardly scary subs a ramp incident. A push back error. Some guy running a tug is looking for a new job. A Walmart fender bender.

Might have been nice if they made it off the ramp. Let alone to a taxiway, or maybe a runway.
