Hey the Cubs look awesome this year! as long as they are playing the Reds

Because if there's one thing the Red Sox need the day their bullpen gives up fourteen runs in two innings, it's an outfielder.

Oh that will put the train back on the rails.....

I'll actually miss him. Good clubhouse guy, decent fielder, and he was a pretty good hitter before taking the pitch to the face.

Come to think of it, the pitch to the face was a Red Sox game, no?

It was.

Cubs got the good end of this deal. Bowden isn't too bad, and Byrd is just god-awful this year

*FACEPALM*

Does no one look beyond this season's numbers?!?

We traded Bowden(who was struggling to the point management demoted him) and a PTBNL for Marlon Byrd - AND the cash from the Cubs to pay him. He costs us nothing! And if the change of scenery rejuvenates his game, he could be a great tool to either keep on the roster or trade later on.

They've already called up two outfielders from Pawtucket, and one of those is hurt now. So that makes four(Ellsbury, Crawford, Kalish, Repko). We have no veteran outfielders, and frankly Cody Ross looks overwhelmed in center field. And this deal was in the works before yesterday's game even started.

I don't disagree that the Red Sox Bullpen is a nightmare, but this is a win-win trade for us.

Like I said yesterday, DFAing Bowden was stupid. But there was no way he passes through waivers, so this is much, much more than I expected. Byrd has been an average hitter over his career (100 OPS+ going into this season), which is far better than Repko (73 OPS+). He's been a roughly average defensive CF over his career, which is better than Darnell. And, oh yeah, the Sox are essentially not paying him.

I'm assuming the PTBNL is no one special here, of course. If that turns out to be someone good, my opinion might change. But for right now, I see absolutely no downside here. Even if Byrd continues hitting the way he has been (which is really, really unlikely), that's STILL better than Repko has been, and it costs the team nothing to release him when everyone else comes back.

Note to Red Sox Admins: It appears you forgot to change Theo's password.

Yup. That'll fix it.

I read somewhere (can't remember) that the Cubs and Red Sox agreed on a list of pitching prospects as the PTBNL. The Cubs get to scout them over the next month, and will choose from the list in May.

Good trade for both teams.

Byrd will start hitting again, and he's a solid defending CF. And, as mentioned by others, the Sox didn't really pay for him. The Cubs need to play their youngsters to see what they have, and they would have lost MB in free agent after this year anyway. This way they get something.

I don't care if Theo signed over concession rights to Wrigley and every bar in Wrigleyville, it still won't improve the bullpen. I don't know how people are fooling themselves into believing otherwise.

I don't think anyone is. But the OF is a problem TOO. I don't see how the response to "Sox picked up an average CF for essentially free" is "BUT THEY DIDN'T FIX THE BULLPEN."

Also, just saw that Repko was DLed, with Lars Anderson (who has been playing LF in AAA) called up to replace him.

So the only IF on the bench is Punto, with Youk listed as DTD. Great. Bet we get to see Darnell McDonald play a little infield this week.

..and you've been following the Sox (and their fans) for how long?

Fair enough.
