I'd like to see it real-time without the pauses and without the crappy music.

Meh, I've been doing that with checks forever.

Interesting for a commercial, but ditto on the edit/music hate

THIS

I thought there was something wrong with the video.

For me, the editing killed any sense of propulsion and gave the impression of it inverting while stationary. Every time it seemed like it might be making progress, they'd cut to the suit with the smart phone.

I'm going to have to look for an actually decent demo of this kiting.

So really, the propulsion comes from the motors turning the vanes. It's untethered, so the motors are running on batteries.

Bet it only does its little dance for ten minutes or so. Pretty, but more of an art project using a bit of engineering than anything.

2012-04-21 08:33:54 PM
Has anyone mentioned that the editing sucks?

So Gizmodo is 'some guy' now? Also, crap music, crap editing, this link is garbage, etc.

No nobody got the reference? That's illegal.

2012-04-21 08:40:30 PM
It's not new; the principle is at least around 80 years old. Still, it's not surprising that not many people still read science magazines from before WWII, and you can't really blame them, either. Life is short.

That's the slickest non-biological application of it I've seen, though. Too bad the video is a total dickish piece of crap that fails at its singular real job -- showing you what the damn thing does.

Yeah, I came here to complain that Gawker links are apparently now being disguised.

sites.google.com

I don't know why Fark links to so much Gawker stuff, when Gawker itself is just stealing other peoples' content. 99% of Gawker 'articles' which themselves link to the actual original content. Why can't we just go straight to the source, without having to go through that yellow-journalism abortion of web design?

I actually watched the whole thing, hoping that maybe, just maybe, the editor would get the FARK over himself long enough to let me see ONE full cycle, with propulsion, in real time.

Yeah. Didn't think so.

Came here to call the editor an asshole, see it's been covered. I love you guys.

For farks sake, let it perform one damned revolution without your idiotic speed up/slow down editing so I can watch the friggen joints do what they do!

Not to mention the fact that many of their "articles" are just 4 or 5 sentences describing an imbedded youtube clip. Subtards of the world, hear me! Just submit a video tab link to the actual youtube video. No one wants to go to a gawker site!

For f*ck's sake... when you are trying to demonstrate a complex technical process, do not do it in 47 out of focus mismatched framerate cuts, cross faded between out of frame and completely washed out by solar back-lighting. Put the camera on a goddamn tripod, center the objective in frame, and don't touch it until the demonstration is over.

That's actually pretty neat, and I'd love to watch it up close.

I know it's infinitely cooler than the City of Phoenix's giant floating tethered 100 foot wide Klein-gina

I only made it half-way through the video, partly because of the editing, and partly because I knew the line of farkers waiting to cock-punch the editor was growing longer each second.

Is it time for the great revolt against Gawker? Sounds like it, and this hideously frustrating video is a prime kicking-off point. Yeah, I know they didn't make the video, but it and the mindless Gacker commentary that accompanies it exemplify the level of retch that we've come to expect.

Be a Stalker, no more Gawker!

Came here to say the same thing everyone else is saying about the editing. This isn't a fight scene from 300. You don't have to do the fast/slow edit effect every three seconds to keep the short attention span crowd from getting bored.

I found that strangely uninteresting.

This, the article tries to make it sound more like some new means of propulsion. It's still rotational, like some flying insects, it's more of a "rowing" or 'paddling" through the air. It's just that the "oars" are an unconventional shape/arrangement. Which is also the same property that a jet works on(atleast the bladed intakes, like a fan). Instead of efficiency, it focuses more on aesthetics.

I tried to find a version of the video without the fancy / shiatty editing and failed. However, it turns out that Festo is into a whole bunch of strange and neat stuff.

(hopefully without the shiat editing - haven't watched them all the way through. yet)

Has anyone pointed out that "kiting" is also a legitimate form of PvE in MMORPG's?

I'd like to get my hands on the idiot who invented that random-speed-up technique. It's annoying, distracting and never beneficial in any shape or form.
The music didn't help, either.

2012-04-22 11:25:55 AM
So let me get this straight... that's 44 posts so far. 39 hated the music &/or editing. 25 hated Gawker &/or Gizmodo. A further 10 thought the kite thing was nothing special anyways.

TL;DR The whole farking thing was a giant pile of poo and someone forgot to wipe.

Thanks. Me, too. I also hate whatever film 'art' student shot it. (Wasn't the out-of-focus shot done, like, a decade ago now?) It looks like a cosmetics ad. And not even one of the more tolerable ones. I gave it less than a minute.

That video actually made me angry.
