I may have to get into watching this show. My 16 year old daughter loves it. I've only seen parts (including "Sonic Rainboom") but the pony pics have shown up in nearly every NFL thread from last season, so at least I know the characters.

I watched 5 minutes of the first episode on netflix, but my wife and I didn't get it. I know first episodes are usually not the best, but should I give it a chance, or is the some big joke I missed because I'm a law student and don't get to watch much TV anymore.

/[Adventure Time is] the better Show-marketed-to-Kids-but-Watched-by-Adults show, though I'm pretty sure it's not really created for kids.

I find the idea of trying to follow up BSG with My little Pony to be an odd one, but if anyone's interested in Adventure Time, I would probably start with this episode.

If you liked Power Puff Girls and Foster's Home, you'll like MLP. People have already posted good starter episodes, but yeah, the pilot is kind of slow. Best thing about MLP? The pop culture references; it makes the show smart and keeps the adults entertained.

Another choice: Young Justice. The very long 'Season 1' just wrapped up today and Season 2 starts next Saturday.

The comic book geek in me could never watch Young Justice, because of the way Didiot screwed the YJ comic book over just so all the characters could be like they were in the Teen Titans cartoon.

And now, a decade too late, they find some value in Young Justice?

Trust me. It's well written. Greg Wiseman is in charge. Peter David pulls some scripting duty and puts in Easter Eggs in his episodes. Milestone characters are getting brought in (Icon joins the JL, ROcket joins JY), Bruce Greenwood is now the second best Batman after Kevin Conroy, Danica McKellar voicing Miss Martian as a shy and unsure teen, Superman being an uncomfortable and absent father figure to Connor.... This series is seriously awesome. And Season 2 is going to be YJ versus a mind-controlled League; the *entire* League. Also, Wonder Girl (Cassie) and Blue Beetle (Jamie) are being brought in.

I don't watch teh ponies, but a good show is a good show, regardless of target audience. If the art is good, the characters empathetic, and the writing is engaging, then what exactly is the problem with people like it? Because it's "for kids"? That's a prudish, immature way of thinking. Invader Zim, PPG, and Teen Titans were all great shows that plenty of folks turned their noses up at because they considered them "for kids" as well. If you want to deprive yourself of entertaining content because of media prejudice then go right ahead, but nobody else has any moral obligation to follow you.

At least it has a plot and a message. Nobody can say the same for the likes of "Swamp People" and "Pawn Stars".

The one thing I don't get about that is the allegations that Derpy is handicapped because of her eyes, and how that's offensive.

And even if they wanted to do a Derpy is Handicapped episode, wouldn't that be a great lesson about tolerance and understanding people who are different?

There were several problems
a) Rainbow Dash sounds more annoyed/angry than anything else at Derpy during their scene
b) The internet is kinda flooded with "Derp" pictures of people or animals doing "Derp" faces and being taken as retarded.
c) Derpy sounds a bit retarded because Tabitha thought Derpy was a boy, and thus voiced her as a boy, which came out kinda awkward (No one had told Tabitha that Derpy was a girl)

Combine all that, and you have a recipe for disaster, because some people, like Yamino, construed that Rainbow Dash was being an ableist towards Derpy because Derpy was being retarded.

The name Derpy will never be used in any canonical form, which is why I wish they would have gone with Ditzy right off the bat. Plus it would not have raised that big of a ruckus and the Ditzy toy would prolly be seeing a fall release just like the other background ponies that are getting toys too.

I understand all of that.

I don't like it. But, it is what it is.

So, I'd rather see Derpy stay in the background for season 3 and if there's a beyond. And that's okay. I mean, Doctor Whooves doesn't have a speaking part, even though he got a scene in today's episode where he was being chased by a monster (as a good Time Stallion should be).

...but if they could get Colin Baker for a couple lines, I'd be okay with that, too.

Or, they pick a craftier way to cash in, eventually... say, make Derpy into a chase figure, where if retailers buy a case of whatever, they get one Derpy.

And that's definitely something Hasbro would know about.

That's why I'm in favor of poor Derpy just being an amusing background character. The one speaking part turned into a clusterfark... and she didn't need a speaking part to become a cult (colt?) hero.

Hasbro is making a some weird decisions all around.

I think I mentioned earlier about DVD box sets... Shout Factory has confirmed that it's Hasbro's decision to release the series only as cheap single disc theme collections, because that is the format that best caters to their traditional audience (moms buying a cheap disc for their kids to play over and over and over and over).

I don't get that. I would think there's a large enough audience that would buy a full season release. If nothing else, it could be done for Shout's internet exclusive Shout Select label. But, no go.

That seems to me like leaving cash on the table, much in the same way not making a Derpy figure is leaving fans with money in their pockets.

Ha! I was half-way through the thread when I checked to see if they were replaying the episodes this weekend. DVR is set.

The 5-year old will be happy to have ponies when I'm done watching the F1 race, but the 2 year old will be pissed that's another hour he'll have to wait to watch Thomas.

and australia actually gets a dvd boxset aimed at the peripheral demographic (they even call it the Brony Set)

I saw the news on that, and thought it was odd that farkin' region 4 gets the season set and America doesn't. Like I said, even if Hasbro doesn't want to take a chance on a wide retail release, Shout Select is the perfect place to release a full season if they're afraid the sales won't be there.

Speaking of adult things popping up in kids shows, I was watching Sesame Street with my two-year-old and two-month-old the other day and noticed one of the characters had a painting of Jimi Hendrix hanging on his wall. I already bombard them with more classic rock than should be healthy for infants and toddlers (my oldest, by the way, loves The Wall and got a kick out of seeing Gilmour on top of The Wall last year), but seeing Hendrix pop up in Sesame Street was awesome.

Whatever happened to The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack? First Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy dropped off the face of the Earth with not even reruns on Cartoon Network, and then my Flapjack disappeared too. Cartoon Network should at least run some of them at night on Adult Swim. It would be a good fit and Adult Swim's original content is 95% garbage.

People who like ponies are gay, lame virgins with no social skills. Everybody knows that biatches prefer guys who paint Warhammer figurines and write Dr Who/Star Wars crossover fanfic. That shiat RULES!

Dinobot: FirstNationalBastard: That's why I'm in favor of poor Derpy just being an amusing background character. The one speaking part turned into a clusterfark... and she didn't need a speaking part to become a cult (colt?) hero.

I know, and I know I'm repeating again, I just feel its strange hasbro is not tapping into the profits they could get from a Derpy/Ditzy toy.
