Lamborghini and SUV. For when your penis is actually an "innie".

i saw a lambo SUV in geneva ten years ago at a gas station. to fill it up, the driver actually had to get into the pickup truck bed because the filler cap was in a tank behind the cabin. it was all very silly. apparently the tank holds 76 gallons. that's like $600 to fill up in europe.

Oh, it's ugly as sh*t. Even Auntie has/had one!

Can't find the video, I think it was in 1996. Tina Turner was on 60 Minutes an they showed her driving a nasty looking white one. It was way less cool than her rocket engine pigsh*t fueled ride from Beyond Thunderdome.

If you are rich, you likely won't have to choose between the two.

If I were truly wealthy I'd have an entire airplane hanger full of ridiculous vehicles.

Looks like the Bimmer X6M

Looks like most sports-car SUVs. They're all either hideous or just look like swollen, jumped-up sports-cars. Yes, the latter is the better option.

Also, most reviews of this SUV gush about how big the 24" wheels are. That just isn't a shockingly large wheel size for a high-power aggressive SUV. If they were 30", sure, but . . . if the press is going on about the wheels, odds are the overall package isn't getting the job done.

People laughed at the very idea of a Porsche SUV and now the Cayenne is their best selling model.

I love sports cars.
I love trucks and SUVs.

For the cost of this thing, you could likely buy a ZR1 and an Escalade.

And for half that, you can buy a Lotus Exige and Chevy Suburban, The Exige is faster and the Suburban does everything this piece of shiat does.

Giving a vehicle an extra couple of inches of ground clearance doesn't make it an SUV any more than lowering an SUV and putting low profile tires on it makes it a sports car.

Has anyone pointed out it's a crossover and not a SUV?

*ducks*

2012-04-21 11:29:03 AM
If you're going for a ridiculous SUV why would you go for one that still looks like a sportscar?

If you're going, and you've got that kind of cash to drop, go huge. Go for an old LM2002, a REALLY old Volvo Sugga, Merc's G-Wagen, a real Humvee, a Marauder or let some third-party company like Icon build you whatever you want.

I mean, I know this is so some CEO's wife can sneer at her neighbor's "low rent" Cayenne Turbo S, but when you're spending this kind of money subtlety is a closed , burned and buried book.

To soccer moms who see them as status cars. Wait 30 years - see if a Caenne registry forms... betcha it won't. There are however, registries for the 356, 912, early (short wheel base) 911s, and one tried to form for the M491 911 (factory turbo look from '84-89) ...

The LM002 was made for rich oil seikhs, it could get up near top speed on open sand which is hella impressive.

Mind you in the middle east they all drive really fast to avoid getting shot at and a truck that could transition off the road at maintain speed would be right up their alley.

Although A) it doesn't really drive like a classic SUV and B) I can't imagine it ever going on anything rougher than gravel roads, and even then the owner would probably be gritting his teeth the entire time.

I think the industry is moving toward a more sporty crossover, which is what this car is. Large tires, although maybe this wasn't intended, is the ONLY thing that gives you better ground clearance. Many people think having some huge lift on your truck/SUV makes it better off road, but it only allows you to put on bigger tires, which is where the real benefit is. I also think the Porsche SUV is kind of ugly, but maybe they'll change it.

They were trying to sell the LM002 to the Saudi Army when I lived there back in the '80s. The Saudis bought 40 but ultimately chose Mercedes, but there was a guy who bought one off them and he used to cruise through our neighborhood and take it off-roading. Keep in mind this was desert modified and militarized.

And now people laugh at actual Porsche SUVs. Seriously, no level of performance makes up for the fugliness of those (and the BMW sports SUVs, and the Mitsu/Infiniti ones).

You can fire a turd out of a cannon, but it's still a turd. The people driving those turds don't need to care what anyone else thinks -- and, for their sake, it's probably best if they don't.

You're looking at it from the car enthusiast side, but you need to see the business side. The trick is to keep the exotic "crown" brand, but to try to sell a boatload more cars somehow. The dream of the Audi business guys is less about producing so few that there is a registry, but more about producing so many that everyone drains their life savings for one. First of all, it is better business-wise to sell 300,000 cars at $1k profit than 1000 cars at $80k profit, and furthermore even better if you can do both. Public companies have to grow, and that is tough when you have a niche exotic product -- you have to get your current customers to double down, or provide a product that attracts a new customers.

However they need to do it while preserving the allure/perception of elite/exotic and avoiding confusing in the brand which is the trick.

Public companies often want to grow, but they don't have to, especially if they have sufficient cachet. It's when larger corporations buy small specialty manufacturers that things tend to go stupid. It's happened before, and it'll happen again, and it's certainly happening now.

This doesn't excuse or even explain a lot of the stupid and ugly design choices being made by, say, BMW or Audi, though. Frankly, Audis would be seen much less as 'cock cars' if they would just drop the stupidly designed LED headlights that scream POSER to the world. Audi is building some truly kickass cars these days, but they insist on making them look terrible in the name of making them distinctive.

That is a completely failure of confidence in your logo and branding, right there.
