So if ManU win the league at the Etihad stadium will they be presented with the trophy there and then?

I can only think of one place worse to do that.

Also its time to mock QPR. How did all those premier league quality players do for you? Are you nice and safe for the next season?

We're getting to the end of the season, and this article from a few weeks ago sums up my thoughts exactly.

8 April 2012 - The chase for the Champions League dollars is breeding mediocrity
"While Chelsea fans may dream of defeating Europe's premier team, Ron Gourlay, Chelsea's chief executive, has already admitted he would rather the club finish fourth in the Premier League. Why? So Chelsea can play in the Champions League again next season. Let me get that straight: Gourlay's club are in the quarter-finals of the competition right now and yet all he can think about is reaching the qualifying stage of the same competition next season."

Norfolking Chance: Also its time to mock QPR. How did all those premier league quality players do for you? Are you nice and safe for the next season?

I guess they should have come up with a five or six year plan for staying in the PL rather than just reaching it.

/The Four Year Plan was an excellent documentary about when billionaires buy a football club.

Nope, they get it at home. So they would celebrate at the Etihad, I'm sure, but they don't physically get the trophy until the go back to Old Trafford.

GET IT ON!

Should be a good one, the Chelsea-Arsenal game.

Chelsea look like they are resting their stars for the Champions League match. RDM really wants to go for it at the Nou Camp.

2012-04-21 07:58:38 AM
This will be a tough game for Arsenal today. Chelsea looks like a different team without AVB coaching them and they're going to be terribly dangerous. Arsenal need to control the midfield to win, and that's going to be a huge challenge without Arteta.

At the moment, the Guuers are losing that midfield battle.

2012-04-21 08:00:08 AM
It looks like RDM played a pretty good strategy with his bench: they seem to have a message that if they play well here, they might play their way into the Barca game. Chelsea seem to have an extra pep in their step.

Where was the marking on Koscielny? Chelsea fell asleep there, a problem with working with a new back 4.

2012-04-21 08:41:13 AM
This game is much less entertaining than the 5-3 thriller earlier in the year. Good result for spurs so far though.

Cajnik: Let me get that straight: Gourlay's club are in the quarter-finals of the competition right now and yet all he can think about is reaching the qualifying stage of the same competition next season."

Gourlay doesn't think they can turtle at the Nou Camp for 90 minutes as well (and against Real / Bayern), plus until the Liverpool rule the winners weren't guaranteed a berth for next season. They're also struggling at the Emirates this second, so those fears aren't unfounded.

Morning all. Couple of things:

1) fing awesome news of the day is I'll be at the Yotes game tonight. Fingers crossed we break our playoff streak.

2). Just picked up Fifa street 12. Anybody else pick this up. I'm kinda disappointed. I knew they were improving the graphics to make it more like the standard Fifa games, but they also made the controls more intense and the physics (for lack of a better word) more real. When I want to play more realistic soccer, I'll play FIFA. But street was awesome for easy play and being able to dive power head in an areal crosses off the side wall.

I think Arsenal missed Arteta dearly, there were huge stretches where there was no one in the center of midfield. Chelsea basically put a whole new team out there.

The fourth place finisher plays in the Euro League.

I think he's better on the periphery, maybe not forever, but right now, he does not need to be in the middle of the field, he gives the ball away far too much. And you know when you see a somebody playing and you say, "yeah, that's the guy," I don't say that when I watch him play.

2012-04-21 10:41:00 AM

Lord Jubjub: The fourth place finisher plays in the Euro League.

Right. And the defending champs do go in at the qualifying rounds and not the group stages, correct? I do remember that final in 2005, some dude in my Slavic and East European History class gave us the 3-0 scoreline from his phone at halftime and I made it home in time to see the penalties. Remarkable.

2012-04-21 10:51:27 AM
The Premier League has 4 spots: 3 for the group stage, and 1 for qualifying.

If Chelsea wins the CL yet stays out of the top 4, they get the qualifying spot, and the top three in the league get their group stage spots. 4th place would then go to Europa.

2012-04-21 10:52:24 AM

I moved to London 2 years ago, settling on Islington. I asked the cabbie on the ride from the airport which team is closest to where I live (Arsenal), and that was that. Also I had submitted a TFD soliciting advice on a team to support and it came back Arsenal/Fulham. So here I am

Alrighty!

We both got to the bar, and the place has a brunch special of two brunch plates and a pitcher of bloody marys for $25. I know a lot of the staff, so I got them extra stiff. I got my usual steak and eggs and my friend got the crabcake eggs benedict (BET YOU CAN'T GUESS WHICH ONE OF US IS THE CHELSEA FAN).

I polished off my half of the bloody marys before the half, and I enjoyed an Amstel Light a the half. I wasn't going for flash, as you can tell. During the match, the "Arsenal Room" did the Robin van Persie chant at every free kick. He would mimic this chant as he missed, so I promptly told my friend to shut his farking trap. Maybe it was the booze, but he seemed to slowly forget the rules of the game as the drinks came. He still doesn't believe Torres was offsides on one particular play, and called for a PK at every contact in the box. Amusing, but would have been even more so had he not been at my table. I love my friend, I just hate that he's a Chelski fan.

By the second half, I had two more quick pints (Boddington's, the only not-sh*t thing to ever come from Liverpool outside of the Beatles) and my friend had someone caught up. Being a pint ahead, I sealed the deal with a shot of whiskey. It was a bold, attacking move, but I wasn't going for style - I was going for the "3 points", and I got it.

We shook hands, acknowledged the draw, and paid for the ticket. He proceeded to say that Chelsea was better because of going further in Champions League, and I proceeded to call him a coont.

Now I'm back at home with you fine folk, mere minutes from a nap.

Billy Crystal Meth Lab: tom servo bit me: Billy Crystal Meth Lab: make some girl feel uncomfortable at a bar

Any girl, or is there a particular target?

Any. I'm the wind, baby.

tom servo bit me: ADubs86: Well those four clubs have the most supporters on Fark, so it's no surprise that people don't comment when thier teams are playing.

The hockey thread last night was pretty boring too. Here's a fun question - how'd everyone come to their allegiances?

I root for Tottenham, but I'd be hesitant to say its an allegiance. I wanted to understand the game better and felt I'd get more of a feel for it if I picked a team that I could follow all year. I didn't want to be a bandwagon jumper, but I also wanted a team that would be 'pretty sure' to stay in the EPL.

zoobaby: Billy Crystal Meth Lab: HaywoodJablonski: Awesome! So what did you win, other than a nap and a sure Sunday afternoon hangover?

The game was our deciding factor on who paid, and RvP was an inconsiderate bastard and didn't finish, so it was technically a draw. I win the distinction of getting hammered before 9:30am and hopefully one of the greatest Saturday nights in history.

/Probably end with me playing FIFA alone.

Making a girl feel uncomfortable sounded a lot more entertaining.

These two things aren't mutually exclusive.

Uncomfortable girl + drunk me = going home and playing FIFA alone

hello, kinda late,
anyways, Koscielny saved the gunners on many occasions and was incredible.
Torres needs help and sturridge need to learn how to aim or pass better.

Torres played the entire second half shirtless after it got caught in the weed whacker Miereles uses to style his hair. Not that that would interest you.

Billy Crystal Meth Lab: I am taking that nap. But, on my way home, I picked up a 64oz growler of Stone Arrogant Bastard. That should be polished off by the end of dinner.

Well played, and good luck, sir.

I've had a week from hell in regards to work, so my plan is to drink until I can barely see and make some girl feel uncomfortable at a bar, because I deserve it, damnit.

You do, and frankly, I think some girl deserves it too.

/Walcott supposedly missing the rest of the season.

To be fair, he's only been around for about half of the season anyway. But hey, fark it, no Arteta, no Jack, no Theo, Gervinho is in witness protection, Abu Diaby is back until his leg explodes, I'm excited about Rosicky's play, RvP forgot how to put it in the net all of a sudden, Gibbs...GIBBS, yeah I think we're in good shape.

2012-04-21 12:02:36 PM
My hopes for the late match: QPR take the points, and Joey Barton spontaneously combusts while standing very close to Adebayor.

My team has taken six points from Wigan. Thusly, my team is better than your team.

Okay, the short version of how I came to be a Liverpool fan, because I really don't feel like typing:

I had always been a fan of soccer ever since I played it as a kid at my local YMCA. I wasn't good enough to get on a school team, so I relegated myself to being a casual observer.

Around 2001, after watching for a few years, I figured it was just about time to start picking a team. I was a bit of a bandwagoner back in the day, so I looked at the last champions, which happened to be Manchester United and Arsenal. I liked the teams, but didn't really come to love either one of them. Don't know what it was, but I just didn't feel drawn to them.

I kept watching, but I continued looking for a team to support. I relied on an old standby of mine: who was champ the year I was born. A quick search for First Division 1986 champs lead me to Liverpool. First Liverpool match watched: 2001 FA Cup final at Cardiff. What a game that was. Ever since, I've been a fan.

2012-04-21 12:12:37 PM
Wow, Friedel could make his 300th consecutive premier league start today. That's pretty unheard of.

HaywoodJablonski/Mr_H/ADubs86

All legit reasons, I'd say. I was fourteen the first time I visited Britain (during France 98). I was with my family in a china shop in the Cotswolds, bored nearly to tears. The shop's selection had china mugs with the crests of each Premier League club that year. Gravitating towards anything sports-related, and needing relief from the fact that a china shop in the Cotswolds is, to a fourteen-year-old boy, a Boring Place, I checked out the selection, determining to get myself a souvenir. At the time I was a huge Michigan football fan, so it came down to Spurs or Chelsea, as both clubs used blue and gold in their crests. Spurs won out because their blue was darker (in fact, I'm looking at that mug right now - I use it to keep the quarters on my desk).

A year later, my uncle who was living in Basildon sent me a Spurs scarf as a Christmas gift, remembering my mug purchase from earlier. Now it was on, although in those rare old times it was considerably tougher to follow the league. I drifted in and out of interest in the game for a while, finally throwing myself back into it after I lived in England for a few months in '04. Been an interesting few seasons to follow Spurs since then.

So yeah, my loyalty story is probably way lamer than most people's, but hey, at least I've stuck with it. . .

I followed the US national team for a while, pretty much starting with the 2002 WC. I decided to pick a team to follow the premier league in 2006, after the world cup. Since Brian McBride was my favorite player, I followed him and Carlos Bocanegra to West London.

I know a lot of Americans follow Fulham for the USMNT connection. To a lesser extent, I see some of that with Everton as well.

Mine is a totally not legit reason at all and you people will laugh. If anyone has seen the movie Eurotrip, you'll note that the bunch of hooligans they meet are Manchester United fans and I thought they were hilarious. Then when I got to college we had Fox Sports World (which turned into FSC and now Fox Soccer) and Manchester United were on all the time so I kinda followed them. However, it wasn't until a few years in that I became a diehard fan, most notibly the 2007 (I think) 4-0 win against Arsenal in the FA Cup.

However, these days I cheer for Spurs as well because my best friend is a Spurs fan and my English coworker is also a Spurs fan and we get along well. Then again I cheer for Everton in every game they play not against Man United and sometimes for Fulham (like today) when I can watch.

I will always be a DC United supporter first though. Local team, great supporters groups, active in the community, founding member of MLS, history, and just all around great club.

2012-04-21 12:31:16 PM
Oh and the Everton connection is obviously because of Timmy Howard (my favorite player) and Donovan (who I cheer against when he plays for the Galaxy).

Assou-Ekotto looks like garbage so far.

Everyone's got their spectrum, don't they? I have Newcastle love - my sister's a nominal Newcastle supporter. Fulham has a place in my heart. Everyone hates Leeds, but they're like Notre Dame or Oklahoma - it's fun to have them in the mix, simply because they're a big name and they ought to be there. Super easy to root against Arsenal, Chelsea, and Man City, but I have a special hate for Man Utd because one of my co-workers is "THAT Man Utd fan" - you know the type. He also happens to be "THAT Yankee fan," if that provides any context.

2012-04-21 12:49:21 PM
I was in Europe during the 2002 World Cup (Japan-Korea) and got swept up in the madness, so when I returned home I was interested in following the Premier League. My roommate at the time was a huge Liverpool fan so I ended up watching a lot of Liverpool matches and they just kind of grew on me. Also I liked Michael Owen but I... I don't like to talk about that. And the former roommate is the current boyfriend. We'll get married to You'll Never Walk Alone and name our first kid Kenny Stevie Rushie Robbie Carra Shankly. Or maybe just our cats.

I should note I have an equal number of Man United jerseys (Berba and Rooney) as I do Everton (2 Donovan) and West Ham (Spector and Carlton Cole). 4 DC United jerseys (Charlie Davies, Luciano Emilio, Dejan Jakovic, and blank), 2 US jerseys (Timmy and a blank one) and a host of others from here and there. I think my collection is 26 right now.

And there we go-al...

Harry for England talk started, seems to have taken his mojo away. Same with RvP, as soon as the POY talk started in earnest, his form turned south.

I've always lived inside a mile of Ashton Gate, and for the last 9 months I've lived pretty much next door to it. Been a season ticket holder for almost 10 years, and have been present at as many calamities as I have at triumphs. I wish we'd be 90 minutes away from the Premier League more often than 90 away from League One though.

/staying up - 2-0 vs Barnsley, and Coventry & Portsmouth both lost to relegate themselves
//Pity we're losing Southampton to the Prem, that was a nice six points to get

2012-04-21 01:03:52 PM
I think it also had to do with the switch to 442. It doesn't work as proven time and again. It worked one time and Harry continues to rely on it. I was excited when they started 451 against Chelsea and it worked for 75 minutes, before, well, you know. They have such a dominant midfield I don't understand it.

I guess in this match they are playing 451, but without Bale and Lennon for speed down the wings, it doesn't work as well. They seem to be playing Modric further forward with Scotty and Sandro playing as holding MFs and VdV up top with Bale down the left.

Spurs are just being played off the pitch at the moment, even with those 2 good opportunities.

Fulham has a tough road to the finish line. Both Merseyside teams plus Sunderland and Spurs. I would really, really like to finish above Liverpool. Hysterical.

I think RvP is tired. And the contract is a distraction, and the POY of the year stuff is there too. But mostly I just think he's farking tired.

This almost totally replicates my experience. Everton has Howard, Fulham has Dempsey, and Tottenham looked to be a team challenging to be one of the Big Four (displacing Liverpool). It appears that they have stumbled a lot lately, so I'm thinking of changing my cheers to Newcastle. Their rags-to-riches story of the last few years is rather compelling.

Basically, I root for ATBM (any team but Manchester). If I had to choose between City and United, I would go for the team that HASN"T won the EPL almost every year of its existence.

I was a casual soccer fan having played my whole life but never really had a team. After the 2006 World Cup, I bought Winning 11 for PS2 and in that game it starts you out with a bunch of made up players and you eventually transfer in real ones. The first player I ever transfered in was Alan Shearer, and the second player I ever transfered in was Obafemi Martins (hence my user name). Eventually I found out that Shearer had just retired and that Oba was brought in to replace him and so I decided to take up NUFC as my team. 6 years (and one relegation) later, things are FINALLY starting to look up.

1. Reading (89)
2. Southampton (85)
3. West Ham (80)
4. Blackpool (74)
5. Birmingham (73) (gd +25)
6. Cardiff (72) (gd +12)
7. Middlesbrough (70) (gd +2)

Blackpool please.

Portsmouth, Coventry and Doncaster have been relegated. Quite a few former Premier League clubs have dropped into the third tier at one stage or another. It would make an interesting study. Or not.

Welp, looks like Chelsea have given up on 4th. They got some much needed practice on their parallel parking but putting all your eggs in that basket is risky to say the least.

Talking of giving up on 4th...does anyone even bother to laugh at Spuds anymore? They should be hitting terminal velocity soon.....

Newcastle have got to be faves for 4th. Hell, unless someone steps up to fill Artetas (not so fast Aaron, sit the fark down) size 4 1/2's, 3rd could be on for em with a result at City.

Real have defo wrapped it up. This could be the game changer. Pep looks like he might not sign and mentally, Real can stop being scared lil biatchez in clasico's from now on.

Sir Cumference the Flatulent: When I left the US, I moved to Dortmund and lived there for seven years.

Badass - inasmuch as I follow Bundesliga (which is to say "extremely little") Borussia Dortmund are my German club of choice, on account of wearing Bruins colors. I actually got home from junior high one day and flipped on ESPN2 to see them celebrating the Champions League final in 1997. Of course, I had no idea what was going on, but I was excited regardless.

Actually, I normally watch as many games as I can, but I had to leave my house 20 minutes after the end of yesterday's early game.

Regarding my allegiance, a few years ago a friend wanted to start watching EPL and wanted me to watch, too. Since it's hard to pick up a league without having a rooting interest, he picked Chelsea. After researching teams, I settled on Arsenal. Not a very good story, I'm afraid.

I'll be in Los Angeles for the Manc Derby. Might be able to watch it in my hotel?

Just found out I'll be there for the 20th anniversary of the Rodney King beating. Nice.

I saw Bill Hicks do his material on that topic on my first day at Newcastle University.

When I was growing up, football was a grubbier, nastier thing. Living between Liverpool and Manchester, a lot of kids opted out of the culture of violence - the 'Firms'. That's why I occasionally have a snap at those who endorse or romanticise that culture, because I remember what it was like. Sky deserve a lot of opprobrium for things they have done, but there has been a positive/cleansing side as well.

Anyhow, arriving in Newcastle autumn 1992 meant Keegan in full swing. You could taste the atmosphere in the air. So, HWTL.

My grandfather was a shareholder for Middlesbrough. Got him tickets to the ''66 World Cup Final, but I've told that story before.

Two ways.

1. Concede an early goal and it goes downhill from there.
2. Hold out manfully for 70 minutes and then concede two.

Wolves getting anything today would be a very surprising result. They win or go down.

If I wasnt on my iPad this weekend I would have predicted QPR and Everton to get a point, honest I would...

tom servo bit me: Could you please remind me how this works? DNQ defending champs enter at. . .the last qualifying knock-out? And what impact does that have on the fourth-place finisher (hypothetically assuming that it's an English winner)?

Defending champions enter at the group stage.

a) If the titleholder comes from an association entitled to four places in the
UEFA Champions League and qualifies for the UEFA Europa League
through its domestic competitions, the lowest-ranked club of the association's UEFA Champions League representatives is automatically transferred to the UEFA Europa League (into the latest possible round where there is a vacancy). In this case, the number of places to which the
titleholder's association is entitled in the UEFA Champions League and
the UEFA Europa League does not change.

b) If the titleholder comes from an association entitled to four places in the
UEFA Champions League and does not qualify for the UEFA Champions
League or UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, the
lowest-ranked club of the association's UEFA Champions League
representatives is automatically transferred to the UEFA Europa League
(into the latest possible round where there is a vacancy). In this case, the
association of the titleholder is entitled to one additional place in the
UEFA Europa League.

Added time works to a formula/guidelines. I think it is one minute per goal and 30s per sub. Only guidelines though. Ref decides.

TonnageVT: Chupacabra Sandwich: TonnageVT: I see Wolves rolling over today, so there's no point in cheering for them.

I think Wolves should start eleven defenders and literally never leave their own penalty box. Just be total dickheads about it. Why not? You're relegated anyway.

They'd still lose 5-0

and have 2 red cards to boot!
......it seems to me that no one wants the title this year,
or the mayans have something to do with this season some how,
they are getting blamed for everything this year.

I did say almost. It can have a negative impact on teams with a small squad, meaning that league performance suffers. See Stoke, Fulham etc.

If we had a larger squad and/or plenty of kids in need of experience I'd be more positive.

Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique, Spearing, Henderson, Maxi, Kuyt, Carroll, Suarez.

No Stevie? Uh oh. Glad to see Maxi and Kuyt, though it's looking like this might be both of their final hurrahs.

Tell me about it. Although for me it was more of a shock because I was absolutely convinced that with the momentum coming home there was no way we would lose that one. I thought there was absolutely no friggin way.

If Newcastle can extract just 4 points from those 4, they'll be on 66. which means Spurs have to Go 2W, 2D or 3W out of 4 in order to overtake. As poor as they've played recently I dont see it happening...

The problem is that NUFC are not going to be able to catch Totham in terms of goal difference, so Newcastle would have to beat them outright in the standings. I'm not getting my hopes up just yet, although I'm ecstatic just to be guaranteed Europe next season. My predictions for NUFC's run in though is DWLD which would give us the four points if Totham slip up.

I think Pabst actually brews it under contract. I drank it for a while in college, not awful. Pabst does the same with Stroh's, a beloved Detroit beer which I also enjoy on occasion. My father used to drink it in the old days.

Eh, you guys are only 3 points off Arsenal for 3rd with a game in hand. Apart from City, you really ought to win the remaining games espcially with your forwards hitting god mode and the defence almost as it was at the start of the season.

Not to mention our medical staff making that albanian doctor from The Simpsons seem like a nobel prize winning brain surgeon. I'll be surprised if we don't use players who need their parents permission to play evening matches at this rate.

Forget a defenders or a decent centre forward, we need to sign that cute Chelsea physio. She seems to be well qualified. Very very well qualified.
