Election year. To get Team GOP to the polls. Rove knows Romney isn't doing it for them.

Try being older, angrier, whiter, and less tolerant. Throw in some selective interpretation of the bible. Sprinkle liberally with guns, paranoia and "do as I say not as I do." Promote it regularly on at least two national news networks. Make it be everyone over 50 they can find, plus throw in a few eager little sh*ts like Breitbart was before his heart did what his brain couldn't.

Republicans don't want to gays to marry because it reduces the pool of candidates for them to have sex scandals with. It's really pretty simple.

Wait...is that racist?

Sure, no problem. just send them a back dated income tax bill for the last 25 years too.

The NC amendment does more than just stop gay people

"The first sentence of Amendment One says, 'Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.' "

So fark you old people.

I'd like to see what the pastor thinks of poverty and people not having access to healthcare. I suspect he doesn't give a shiat about either.

2012-04-20 11:23:02 PM
And reading further in TFA "... families of all kinds - both married and unmarried -will lose health care benefits for partners and their children and domestic violence laws will be weakened." Well that answers my question.

2012-04-20 11:24:55 PM
The GOP's collaboration of libertarians and theocrats is finally dying. They've become absolutists who fear 'touching the tar baby' above all else.

That is stupid for more than one reason. It's an unconstitutional law because it claims to invalidate the full faith and credit part of the US Constitution.

So much for conservative love for the Constitution. It's a fraud.

I'm just going to ask here:

What exactly did people expect them to do? Because a 3 year old could have told you this is what they would do - social bullshiat, opposition without reason and utter intransigence - though a 3 year old would probably just say they wouldn't play nice.

If you're shocked by this, you're a goddamn moron.

They're gonna need to do a lot of cleaning. Even at that, I don't think the deposit will cover the property damage

/honestly, I don't think they can put together first and last and security deposit to get another place

Yep. I hope Prop 8 goes to the SCOTUS and they strike down that stuff once and for all so we can stop hearing about other states doing this crap.

/but they might also come up with random bullshiat to justify overturning the 9th Circuit to "stick it to the libs".

The strike of Prop 8 was exceptionally narrowly worded to only apply to that law. The intent was to keep Justice Kennedy from wanting to pick it up or overturn the ban. So the USSC would have to radically change the previous judge's ruling, while upholding the strike of the law, and I don't think they do that usually.

I think that if the right could somehow ban all man/man blow jobs, they'd be quite happy exchanging that for a 30 percent rate of no jobs. After all, then they can simply vilify the unemployed as lazy and unworthy of assistance. Gay-bashing AND moving the economy back towards the serf-lord arrangement would be quite a coup for the derpacons.

"Most importantly, we are back here today to uphold the historical truth that ... God said that marriage is between one man and one woman."

This just sets me back on my heels. How can these people say with a straight face that their Judeo-Christian god, who had zero problem with one man and any number of women, has historically been a "one man and one woman" kind of God? Do they not read their own book of fables? It's so juvenile and ridiculous that if they weren't so dangerous, all I could stand to do would be point and laugh.

Also there's the matter it tells private businesses who they can or can not consider as a valid couples. While the state itself can not recognize a particular couple as a valid a pair, it has no authority to tell businesses that they can't recognize whoever they want. Same thing came up in Virginia some years back in regards to a law that the state wouldn't recognize as valid any contract drawn up by a gay person to in regards to personal matters, well that was the intent, the wording worked out to the state saying no contract with a gay person involved could be valid.

GAT_00: o the USSC would have to radically change the previous judge's ruling,

Also the 9th's ruling was strictly along rational basis lines. Which had to do with how the case was presented. Basically the attorneys said there was no rational basis for not allowing same sex couples from marrying. The state didn't even try to defend itself in that case. And to overturn the ruling given that it's a rational basis case would involve some major judicial gymnastics. People will point to cases like Plessy v Ferguson as cases where the SC didn't make a rational decision, but such cases were never presented as saying there's no rational basis for a particular law or precedent.

This is what I've been saying for quite a while now, to all my friends who are terrified that the GOP is going to destroy America. I tell them that we've won, and that this shiat is just the last dying throes of the slain beast. Things are going to be very different one generation from now.

I thought Florida's anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment that they passed in 2008 was ridiculously broad and over the top, but North Carolina really takes the cake.

2012-04-21 02:26:34 AM
You would think that especially Southern states might learn from history. Their segregation and other racist laws embarrassed the entire nation, and I hope that part of their history now embarrasses them. And now they go and do it all over again. One day in the not too distant future all this anti-gay bigotry is going to be viewed in the same light as racist bigotry is now, and these states are once again going to have to be embarrassed about their discriminatory history...that they created in the 21st Century.
