It was probably a tube from a used LAW or AT-4. You can't reload them. It's basically just a giant empty shell casing.

"The preliminary examination of it reveals that the rocket launcher was inert and no explosive material has been identified, so it was not classified as a destructive device," Orchowski said. "There was no violation of the Gun Control Act, the National Firearms Act or any federal explosive laws."

LOL TFA actually includes proquote on why this is NOTHING AT ALL.

Came to ask this. Where might I find one of these civilian-grade rocket launchers? Do pawn shops take them? Can I pick them up there?

Then why can't they show pics of it?

Orchowski said the launcher, which had a military serial number, has been "demilled," meaning it's no longer a military item. He said he couldn't release photos of the device without permission from the military.

So, if it's no longer a military item because it's been demilled, why would you need the permission of the military to release a photo of it?

I'd be like "Cool!, an AT-4 casing." Hose that farker off, and put it on a shelf.

I bet it would be fun to hang out with one in front of the White House, since you know, it's not illegal or anything.

My cousin found one sans rocket in a dump out in the desert when we were kids, my poor ass uncle used to take us foraging out there sometimes. Theyre cool convo pieces, but obviously useless.

Throwing it out??

Those things are worth money!

True, the military consumes a bunch during training. But, policy keeps fairly tight control over the spent tubes for whatever reason... it's legal to possess in itself, but it'd be stealing from the military to take one out of their trash (they do track them), and it could be stolen property.

But there ARE ones out there in surplus stores and online (eBay has banned them), but they're worth SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS. $150-$250 or so for a demilled, dead tube.

The local military surplus store had a few of these hanging on walls as display items not for sale. They're not exactly uncommon. It's not necessarily inappropriate for the bomb squad to take a look, but the original responding officer should have looked to see if light was shining through the length of the barrel if he could have.

OMG A USED ROCKET LAUNCHER!!! EVERYONE PANIC !!!! You have got to be darling kidding me. Someone alerted the media over a non-functioning surplus already fired rocket launcher? The only way this thing could hurt you is if you tripped over it or someone used it as a club. Jesus Christ police and news types, get a grip on yourself. Your jobs aren't so dangerous and important that everything you do needs to be sensationalized. Want a real news story? I have a couple of empty .50 caliber casings at home. They at one time contained actual .50 caliber bullets. I am in possession of a formerly dangerous item. Quick, run a story designed to cause great panic among the masses. Better send the bomb squad over, I could be in danger. You never know when those empty casings might go off.

If it's really an M72LAW, it actually can be reloaded, as they reload trainer units. They're also designed to be so cheap that the soldier firing one in violence can just throw it away instead of lugging an empty launcher with him while under fire.

I don't have any figures for how much new, loaded trainers cost versus buying new training rounds for an existing launcher, but I do know that trainers are probably a bigger part of the business than actual exploding rounds are.
