Yeah, he's not doing himself any favors by accusing the USCCB and Joint Chiefs of Staff of being liars. Oh wait "Ryan later claimed he misspoke, and called Dempsey to apologize." Well, that's all good then, right?

What an idiot.

protecting human dignity, prioritizing the needs of the hungry and homeless and promoting the common good

Do Catholic bishops really believe in these things? If so, good for them, that's the first I'd heard of it. And Paul Ryan doesn't know about it either:

"These are not all the Catholic bishops, and we respectfully disagree," Ryan said.

"These are not all the Catholic bishops, and we respectfully disagree," Ryan said.

USCCB spokesman Don Clemmer cleared the air in an email to TPM. "Bishops who chair USCCB committees are elected by their fellow bishops to represent all of the U.S. bishops on key issues at the national level," he said. "The letters on the federal budget were written by bishops serving in this capacity."

So he calls the Bishops liars, then lies about how many liars are lying about him.

I was thinking the same thing. I thought Catholic Bishops only cared about forcing all women to adhere to a bunch of abstinent men's vision of womanhood and making sure anyone who uses birth control gets the slut shaming they deserve.

Ryan seems to be trying the legislative version of the old Fox News "Some people say," gambit.

Generals: We said we don't need that much money. Look at the budget proposal we turned in.

Ryan: SOME GENERALS SAY differently. THEY say you need more money!

BISHOPS: As Bishops, we don't think your budget does enough for the poor.

RYAN: SOME BISHOPS SAY my budget does plenty for they poor. I think we should listen to them.

Etc.

I'm still fuming over a discussion I had a with a friend last night about Scott Walker that basically used identical logic to this. Any source that disagreed with her position was liberal, and therefore lying, and therefore inadmissible.

What we've seen lately have been some pet bishops, not the ones representing the Church in America, as a whole. Hell, even the Pope only represents the Church as a whole in a very, very narrow range. The current Pope tried to come out against evolution. The body that is responsible for the Church's science views quickly went public and said the Popes views our his own personal views, as a man. On the matter of evolution, the Church's position is that it is established science, and the Pope cannot go against it as a moral guideline for people of the Catholic faith.

So, Ryan is correct that some bishops might like his budget, but those bishops do not represent the Church, and their views cannot be taken as moral direction for people of the Catholic faith.

If you get down to it, most of Catholic Social Teaching is really liberal.

Paul Ryan tried to use the concept of subsidiarity to promote his preferred version of Federalism, without considering all the pesky teachings on poverty, immigration, unions, or anything else that doesn't fit his world view.

He shouldn't forget the USCCB has been promoting universal healthcare for a few decades either.
