This was my favorite part of "The Gong Show". Even as an 11-year-old boy I knew everyone on the show was coked out of their mind.

Too young to have been around for the gong show, but is that why he leans over the wall? To sort some pre-chopped lines of blow.

I was too young as well, but in the late 80s/early 90s USA Network air a ton of 70s and early 80s game shows. I learned way too much about The Gong Show, Joker's Wild, Match Game, Name That Tune, and Let's Make a Deal. Made getting sick kind of a weird vacation, where the fever-dreams and the hair pieces and Jamie Farr all ran together.

What the hell did I just watch? That was epic, before my time but damn that just made my night.

That, my fellow farker, is the fun and insanity of the Gong Show. It's pretty much Fark on TV - insane, hilarious, and weird.

It was a happier time, when major TV shows could stop the entire program to fark around randomly, then get back to work with women and orange popsicles.

I was chatting with a friend and telling him about TGS just last night. And even how Gene Gene The Dancing Machine was just good, enjoyable entertainment.
We need TGS back. Now.
Trashy variety with 30 second intros - none of this 15 minutes of "human interest" background sob-story garbage like the "Got Talent" series.

All right! *clap*
I really like this next act *clap* *scratch head*
But then again, *clap*
I like boogers!

Chuck Barris and The Gong Show started me on the long path to the warped individual I am today. I will be forever grateful.

Comedy Central brought it back a couple of years ago.

It stank, partially because Dave Attell was hosting and his somnambulistic style
was ill suited to it, but mostly because they restructured it as more an actual
competition than a simple variety show.

That, and the acts were all LA-scene comics, and the LA scene ain't what it
was in the 1970s. It seemed overloaded with hipsters and stand up comics.

Shame. I don't remember seeing the new version in the UK but I do remember seeing some episodes back in the day when I was a kid. It wasn't on that regularly but was a giggle when it was.
I suppose that these days it has to be all glitz and glamour, which is a shame.

Indeed.

And it's something that could never be duplicated today.

The Gong Show came along at EXACTLY the right time.

Oh, definitely. The drug abuse on/around the set of The Gong Show had to be out of hand.

That, and the show did whatever it could in the 70's to circumvent the comparatively strict censorship standards of the time.

With TV ratings today, you just couldn't get the same experience on TV. There would be a lot less cleverness and a lot more crudeness.

See also: Match Game.

Twonk: If ever there was a series that cried out to be released on DVD, the Chucky Baby Gong Show is it.

THAT would be terrific. I don't know if that would ever happen because of rights issues surrounding some of the songs, but if they would ever make that DVD, I'd snap it up in a heartbeat.

Bathia_Mapes: What this thread needs is even more GENE GENE THE DANCING MACHINE!

YES.

I love the comments for that video:

Comment: "somebody's on drugs"

Reply: "Everybody in that studio is on drugs."

Rickenbacker: Chuck Barris and The Gong Show started me on the long path to the warped individual I am today. I will be forever grateful.

Chuck Barris is a hero and a legend and he should never have to pay for sandwiches at his sandwich establishment of choice.

FrankieD: What the hell did I just watch? That was epic, before my time but damn that just made my night.

You saw TV the way it was supposed to be.

You'll never see anything that grand again ever. Not any scripted show, not any reality show (which wouldn't be different from the scripted shows, but I digress), not anything.

TheHopeDiamond: It was a happier time, when major TV shows could stop the entire program to fark around randomly, then get back to work with women and orange popsicles.

The Gong Show act that would not end.

I could never get tired of this.

I remember when Game Show Network aired reruns to promote the Chuck Barris is-he-or-is-he-not-w/-the-CIA movie, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

Oh, man, it was a revelation.

foo monkey: Little known fact, that's coke all over Chuck's face, not pie.

BWAHAHAHAHA

I would not doubt that.
