Nah, they'll move the goalposts and ask science to create their own atoms and not use those God created.

This is a cool discovery though. I'd expect local bacteria and other single celled life to take this stuff out really quickly though, NOM NOM NOM style.

Just more evidence that not only are we not the only life in the universe, but that it is likely found EVERYWHERE.

What if they make it left handed? Or the handedness that we are not?

Why not make a six appendaged creature semi-quadra-dextrious? Two legs for walk, and of the four arms; the upper left appendage and the lower right appendage are co-dominant for tasks needing hands.

I think they meant the spiral of the DNA. I believe we use right-handed chirality.

Sure, it could be made in a left handed double helix. Or other sorts of shapes, too. They're just not really found in outside of a lab. And I don't think the handedness of the DNA would keep it from being digested by a more natural organism.

I don't care so much that it can replicate or evolve, I want to know what its going to be replicating and evolving in.

If its going to turn us all into super humans then that's fine. But if science is trying to breed a new plague, or make bullet resistant flaming zombie dinosaurs, then I ask that they kindly refrain from making the act of living more difficult than it is without us being chased around by some artificial abomination.

/Its obvious that mother nature has a dozen ways to make a DNA string.
/Please stop trying to wipe out mankind.

If it was an organism that used the opposite handedness amino acids in proteins for example, they wouldn't be digestable by our enzymes that break down proteins. But doing work towards XNA systems like this is meant as a safeguard for engineered organisms. Typically makes it so they are really unfit outside of specified environments. If they didn't code for these polymerases for example, they are reliant on an outside source.

Hmm, interesting. TFA makes it sound like the replication was induced as part of the experiment though.

I'm much more curious as to how these systems start self-replicating on their own. The real "genesis" moment where life says FU to entropy and becomes increasingly more complex.

Umm... no. Not unless you create new pets. I want a pokemon. I. Want. A. Pokemon. And I know they can do it. I WANT IT I WANT IT! Not the creepy kind, but a cool one. I don't want Mewtwo but Pikachu would be pretty neat. Could you ever get him wet? I wouldn't think so. I would be afraid of getting electrocuted.
