Coincidentally, Pandora queued up "The Weight" as the first song for my bike ride to work after lunch.

Granted, it was a Joe Cocker cover, but still....

I tried to listen to that yesterday when I heard he was about gone. I couldn't make it through without weeping.

Changed tag to Followup so that we wouldn't confuse people who saw the earlier thread from today about his end-stage cancer.

No more pain, no more suffering. He is released. Rest in Peace, Levon.

last night's modern family was titled "the last walt." coincidence?

and a couple of weeks ago, there was a modern family scene in which two people enter and say, "hey, hey, we're the monkeys." it aired the day davey jones died.

WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

Damn, just saw the notice about that aforementioned end-stage cancer today. Maybe time to go over to the mother-in-law's and borrow The Last Waltz.

Never knew The Band too much but obviously have heard their bigger hits... Had just watched The Last Waltz a few weeks ago, directed by Scorcese, and was shocked to see that Holm, not Robbie Robertson, who was the focal point for a great majority of the music... Its strange to see a drummer keep the beat while leading the whole ensemble.. and with such soul and passion...

Can anybody link a clip from The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada when Levon's character says "before you go can you kill me?" That was the best part of the movie.

The Band, sure, but spin the RCO All Stars CD's with Dr. John, Paul Butterfield, Booker T

When the Band called it quits on Thanksgiving 1976, it seemed like the end of an era. Fans of the group couldn't help but notice that the musical horizon was shifting toward disco and punk, two musical forms diametrically opposed to everything the Band had done and represented within modern rock music.

The individual members each began journeys down their individual paths, but the one who remained truest to the original ethos was Levon Helm. While not possessing a voice as soulful as Band-mate Richard Manuel, Helm's expressive Arkansas twang was at the heart of the Band's vocal blend and his utterly unique drumming technique - with drums that always sounded like real wooden drums - was at the root of the group's appeal.

Helm wasted little time assembling a new group and the list of musicians that quickly signed on to the project was astonishing. He recruited Booker T Jones and the two MGs, Steve Cropper and Donald Dunn, another group synonymous with brilliant technique and tasteful economy. New Orleans musical master Dr. John also climbed on board, adding flavor and style. As if this weren't enough to entice listeners, the group was fleshed out with the additional guitar talents of Fred Carter and Paul Butterfield blowing harp and belting out the blues numbers.

Helm also enlisted an incredible horn section consisting of Howard Johnson, the man behind the horn arrangements on the Band's live recordings, in addition to the Saturday Night Live Horns (Malone, Marini and Rubin), yet to become notorious as the horn section for The Blues Brothers.

Helm's RCO All-Stars were a dream aggregation in every respect. They recorded a self-titled album that consisted primarily of good-time, bar-band R&B covers. The album was a delight, but it went by relatively unnoticed within the musical upheaval taking place in 1977. However, when this group took to the road, audiences were treated to a remarkable musical experience, proving that Helm still had a great deal to offer.

"...
and I'm pushin' age seventy-three
Now there's only one place that was meant for me
...
turn the stern and point to shore
the seven seas won't carry us no more
...
it's my belief we've used up all our time
this hill's too steep to climb
and the days that remain ain't worth a dime"

Him & Danko always considered Richard Manuel the lead singer. Sadly, once they hit it big, Manuel's using skyrocketed (he drank 6+ bottles of Grand Marnier a day, plus a ton of blow)

He never really seemed that old to me because until just recently, his hair only had a touch of grey. Even though he's dead, the music never stopped. If there is an afterlife, hopefully he was a friend of the devil, because he'll probably be truckin' to hell in a bucket.

Old Man with Radio: He said he had cancer. Told me to go into town with him. But I don't want to go. I've lived here all my life. I don't want to offend God by shooting myself. It's a problem, you see.

A sad day for music. I got to see him at the Orpheum in Boston in 2008, when he could still sing. I'm glad I did - hell of a show, and the closest I ever got to a Midnight Ramble. I'd say he was my favorite vocalist in The Band, but that would be doing a disservice to Rick Danko and Richard Manuel, because they were ALL great. RIP, Levon.

Now all we've got is Robbie Robertson and that crazy bastard who plays every instrument under the sun.

Damn, I'm gonna have to watch The Last Waltz tonight. I know, I know, he disliked the whole project. Mostly because (a) Robbie and Martin Scorsese made the rest of The Band look like sidemen to Robbie and (b) Richard and Garth got shafted for screen time. Absolutely shafted.

HOWEVER, if you like the last waltz, THIS SHOULD BE PLAYED LOUD! It's a single-camera recording from BIll Graham's archive, of the ENTIRE SHOW, including all the stuff that Scorsese either didn't record or didn't use. Might have to register to watch the whole thing, but's it's free, and well worth it.

Third base!

Should have worked in the Guess Who. Maybe ? and the Mysterians?

In any case, I'd never heard of The Band before now. Obvious, but has to be said:

enad58: Levon's not really featured here, but how a bout a clip from Festival Express?

CSB on - when I first saw the film on DVD, particularly the shot of the Calgary concert, the camera lingered for a second on a nice young couple oblivious to everything but the music. They looked weirdly familiar, so I paused the film, backed up, zoomed in and then I realized who I was looking at - my parents. Called mom and she confirmed they were at the show; it was their first 'date' after my birth.

It was an awesome bit of serendipidy.

/CSB off
