I'm putting the over/under for a national Republican candidate calling for replacing our entire tax system with a head tax at July 15, 2012.

2012-04-19 03:33:49 PM
I just do not get why anyone who isn't filthy rich would ever vote Republican.

Remember:

1. The poor pay no taxes at all; and,
2. Corporations just pass taxes on to consumers through higher prices, so people buying products are the ones truly paying corporate taxes.

Those aren't REAL taxes though. Those don't count. Hell, THOSE people probably won't even notice when we raise those taxes.

But if we try to squeeze one more tax dollar out of the noble Job Creator (blessings and peace be upon him) for this 100ft yacht he's building, or so help us God, force him to settle for the G5 instead of the G6 he so rightfully deserves...

I can already hear the Founding Fathers spinning in their graves.

So let me get this straight. We can't tax the rich, because they'll do something or other and we won't get any of their money because of the Yeti and Sasquatch or something. We CAN tax the poor, because they don't have any money.

Does that about sum it up?

Families making $30,000 or less would see their after-tax income fall, in some cases by as much as 2 percent, while those making over $1 million would see it rise by 12.5 percent..

The talking point is "they don't have skin in the game" so the GOP wants their pound of flesh.

We can tax the poor because the poor don't hire lobbyists.

I think your point sums it up perfectly. America's government is almost indisputably now one that is of, for, and by the people who hire enough high-priced lobbyists to make their voice heard.

FlashHarry: what about payroll,

They're contributions to post-employment support, whether from disability or retirement. They're not income taxes.

FlashHarry: sales, property and all the other taxes the poor pay,

Most of them aren't Federal taxes. Take it up with the states (and, in some places, cities/counties).

(And this is to say nothing of the sorts of taxes on the poor progressives really like; not a peep about taxes on vice, which disproportionately affect the poor. New lotto? Sweet. Double the tobacco tax? Fark yeah!)

FlashHarry: ou farking heartless, lying assholes?

He probably is. But the bigger message? All of the "Bush Tax Cuts," and the "Payroll Tax Cuts," are going away 31 December. If, by some miracle, Romney wins, the sort of thing he's talking about might get passed in lame duck. If Obama wins, they'll all expire. Doubled child credit, AMT fixes, etc., too.

2012-04-19 03:59:07 PM
they won't have any money after he gets through with them, that's for sure.

cameroncrazy1984: This is the modern-day equivalent of "Let them eat cake" isn't it?

Unlike the let them eat cake line, it's real. Marie Antoinette never said the famous line. It wasn't attributed to her until well after the French Revolution. As for the origin of the line, it's from Rousseau's autobiography.

But at the same time, the tax code shouldn't be used as a tool to just bring revenue in

Um...

2012-04-19 04:06:54 PM
why tax them at all then?

2012-04-19 04:10:41 PM
You see, 0 times x is still 0, so no matter what you make x, it's doesn't matter!

So we'll just raise their taxes. They won't notice, and the government gets more revenue!

The tax code was primarily envisioned as a tool by which the powerful elite could make sure that the underclass could never effectively rise above the circumstances into which they were born. Duh.

That's what everyone said last time---but it turned out that they were kept as part of a budget deal. The President is far too pragmatic to be held to such a fate this far out. Also, I've yet to meet a progressive who liked the way lotteries functioned to fund state responsibilities. I don't play lotteries and I can't stand the fact that states are increasingly getting out of their educational funding responsibilities by counting on lottery receipts.

There are very few things that make me want to beat the crap out of a man with somebody else's cock. This article was one of them.

2012-04-19 04:47:01 PM
it's budget would raise taxes on low-income working Americans, Tiberi responded by saying that to do otherwise would be to "beat up on people who are trying to be successful."

Like Willie Sutton who robbed banks because that is where the money is, the rich get taxed more because that is also where the money is. If living tax free meant I'd have to live in a run down, overcrowded apartment in a crappy area with few luxuries I'll take the paying taxes route every time.

If Obama wins, I wouldn't be that surprised if the GOP decides no deal & blows up the economy just to make O look bad for their own political gain.

There are "poor" people anymore anyways.

Don't they have refrigerators and microwave ovens and televisions? Then they aren't poor.

When you raise taxes on the poor, not only are you hurting the people who need the money most, but you're not even getting that much revenue out of it. You can't get blood from a stone.

If they say the 'poor pay no taxes', you are correct that they are full of shiat. If they say they 'pay no income taxes', then they are factually correct.

You and I might agree with the status quo that the poor shouldn't have to pay income taxes, but its still a fact that they don't.

Oh, and FICA taxes is you buying your own retirement funding/disability insurance. Your benefit is determined by how much you pay in. Should we count 401k contributions in our taxes paid as well?

2012-04-19 05:03:58 PM
This really shouldn't be all that hard. Raising taxes on people who spend the overwhelming bulk of their income is a bad idea. It's just plain old shiatty economics. If we need to make up deficits, raise taxes on those who aren't even saving up for a house or the kids' education or retirement or even a farking sailboat or summerhouse on the beach. Raise taxes on those who are literally just saving money to have more money - they're already paying a lower rate than those who bear the brunt of our "progressive" tax scheme.

Keep farking that Being Successful and Rich american dream that is currently as valid and viable as the Be a Rapper or Sport Star dream is for young blacks. Average people do not attain richness with any regularity anymore. The rich now for the most part have always been rich or in touch with it. The few who come into millions far outnumber the many who don't.

This money is trickling down from old criminals, greed-heads, and avaricious people who made their money before there were any rules (Astors, Rockefellers, Duponts) or by breaking them (Kennedys). There are very few people who have an idea, form a business, push it hard and make a million. I'm sure there are some, but some trifling percentage of Americans is no reason to make tax laws based on that slim, 'successful' percent.

And it lowers aggregate demand for goods and services, because they don't buy the things the factories and service sector businesses that the rich own produce or serve, and then to make up for the short fall, the business lets people go because demand has dropped, and it becomes a vicious cycle of contract, contract, contract.

Tax the rich, cycle the money down through programs that benefit the poor. The rich will have it back soon enough. Money and wealth flows to the top naturally, it's up to the government to make sure it doesn't get so imbalanced that society suffers.
