That's always been my philosophy. 'Cept I know it belongs to the Floyd.

That righteous indignation you got goin' on...also a symbol. We'll be taking that back, too.

Tatsuma: The biblical origin of the rainbow is that it signified a new covenant between mankind and G-d, and one of the clauses of that covenant was not to have homosexual relationship.

The rainbow actually predates the bible, and is actually formed by water droplets in the atmosphere refracting light, which results in a spectrum of colors.

Here's a great group that wants to do away with organized religion and it's iconography by introducing their own organized religion with it's own iconography. Except this is the current Mountain-Dew, Extreeeeme Culture type of Iconography. They also show up at high schools to proselytize young kids with their kick ass motor home and counter-culture version of Jesus. Freaking whacks.

Leviticus 25:44-45 However, you may purchase male and female slaves from among the nations around you. You may also purchase the children of temporary residents who live among you, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property.

Back to the fields, Hutch... like a good Christian.

Come to think of it, God sure does do a lot of killing or demanding of killing in the bible. Why do we worship that one again? He seems to require murder to do anything of note.

Perhaps, even, that man's arms could be spread out and his hands restrained in some fashion to let everyone know he's "Open For Business"</i>

We already have something like that.

I suspected there was a little bit of that connotation. The same way they claim atheism and being environmentally-minded are religions.

Man, I try SO hard to be a Centrist. I usually see both sides of any situation, and that includes politics.

Problem is; I stopped being able to put up with the Right about 10-12 years ago. It was almost like flipping a switch, too. All the people who actually made sense got renditioned or something. McCain was the last holdout, and he pissed away every bit of respect I had for him in 2008, all at once. Palin was the final nail in the coffin.

Tatsuma: when you choose a symbol that represents your oppression, hunt, torture and death at the hand of the church for hundreds of years as your own symbol, you might want to hire a new PR firm.

I'm rather sure no deep thought or intense research was put into the selection of a rainbow flag to represent a community (which took two decades to take hold btw). Matter of fact - I'm pretty sure drugs were involved.

/and you can read horrific histories into most symbols used by all sorts of groups - especially religious organizations

OFFICIAL: You have been found guilty by the elders of the town of uttering the name of our Lord, and so, as a blasphemer, you are to be stoned to death.

MATTHIAS: Look. I'd had a lovely supper, and all I said to my wife was 'That piece of halibut was good enough for Jehovah.'

OFFICIAL: Blasphemy! He's said it again!

CROWD: Yes! Yes, he did! He did!

OFFICIAL: Did you hear him?!

CROWD: Yes! Yes, we did! We did!

WOMAN #1: Really!

[silence]

OFFICIAL: Are there any women here today?

CROWD: No. No. No. No...

OFFICIAL: Very well. By virtue of the authority vested in me--

[WOMAN #2 stones MATTHIAS]

MATTHIAS: Oww! Lay off! We haven't started yet!

OFFICIAL: Come on! Who threw that? Who threw that stone? Come on.

CROWD: She did! She did! He did! He! He. He. Him. Him. Him. Him. He did.

WOMAN #2: Sorry. I thought we'd started.

OFFICIAL: Go to the back. Always one, isn't there? Now, where were we?

MATTHIAS: Look. I don't think it ought to be blasphemy, just saying 'Jehovah'.

CROWD: Oooh! He said it again! Oooh!

OFFICIAL: You're only making it worse for yourself!

MATTHIAS: Making it worse?! How could it be worse?! Jehovah! Jehovah! Jehovah!

OFFICIAL: I'm warning you. If you say 'Jehovah' once more...

[MRS. A. stones OFFICIAL]

Right. Who threw that?

[silence]

OFFICIAL: Come on. Who threw that?

CROWD: She did! It was her! He! He. Him. Him. Him. Him. Him. Him.

OFFICIAL: Was it you?

MRS. A.: Yes.

OFFICIAL: Right!

MRS. A.: Well, you did say 'Jehovah'.

[CROWD stones MRS. A.]

OFFICIAL: Stop! Stop, will you?! Stop that! Stop it! Now, look! No one is to stone anyone until I blow this whistle! Do you understand?! Even, and I want to make this absolutely clear, even if they do say 'Jehovah'.

From the Jewish Virtual Library:

One additional element of greater severity is that violation of any one of the seven laws subjects the Noachide to capital punishment by decapitation (Sanh. 57a).

Maimonides' Law of Noahides

14 In what way must [Noahides] fulfill the commandment to establish courts of justice? They are obligated to set up judges and magistrates in every major city to judge according to the above six laws, to warn the nation [regarding their observance]; A noahide who breaks one of these seven laws - is executed by decapitation. [additional text: for example: an idolater, or blasphemer, or muderer, or someone who has had one of the six illicit relations according to [Noahide law], or robbed even the worth of a peruta, or consumed any amount of "torn limb" or "torn meat", or witnessed someone breaking one of these laws, and did not judge and sentance him - all these people are executed by decapitation.] For this all the inhabitants of Shechem were liable for capital punishment. This was because Shechem kidnapped [someone] and they witnessed this and knew [what he had done], but did not judge him. A Noahide is [may be] executed [on the basis of the testimony of] one witness and [the verdict of] a single judge. No prior warning [is required]. Relatives may serve as witnesses. However, a woman may not serve as a witness or a judge [in Noahide law].

Where'd you get that story from? It is funny, although just to clarify, the Bible in no way prohibits saying the name of God, Jehovah. The second commandment prohibits you from taking the name of Jehovah in vain, or cursing it in some way.

Really, ya think?

I always thought the Catholic Church picked the worst symbol EVAR.

A guy being tortured to death on a stick?

It's kind of Goth but I don't really see the mass appeal.

/And don't you smirk, Tats, you adopted a faith that has a symbol that could double as a weapon in an old Bruce Lee movie.

Once they get it back from the gays, they'll have to fight the New Agers off too. Back when I was a child in the early 80s, my fundie mom was convinced by various books that the rainbow was a symbol of the New Age movement and that children were being brainwashed into the movement by being exposed to rainbow themed toys, like Rainbow Brite and the Care Bears. She was terrified of this for years. Nevermind that I was a boy and wanted Transformers and GI Joe, but whatever. The New Age movement was an insidious front for the devil, and we had to be very careful regarding the devil toys and entertainment. I'm still not sure just how exactly the devil and the New Agers all tied in with each other, but now I that I am thinking back, I also recall that the Force was a real problem for her too. Strangely, never a mention regarding gays and the rainbow at that time.

exick: The fact that they would even want it back is striking to me. Firstly, since it's a reminder that their god is an amoral, vindictive, genocidal douchebag who decided that all the imperfect life he created wasn't perfect enough for his taste. Secondly, since it reveals that they're gullible enough to believe the story of Noah and the flood in the Bible is a factual accounting of an event that actually took place.

To be fair, many christians wear a CROSS on around their neck, so there is precedent to the whole "remember horrible event" thing.
