dahmers love zombie: So it's a "dibs" thing? Really?

Yes. The gays really should have shown up before the Jews, instead of being invented in the 1960s by Hollywood.

2012-04-19 04:13:37 PM
OK.... you get back the rainbow, and give them the jesus fish....

How about that? Oh, wait, your "symbols that you co-opted for your own use" aren't for sale?

vernonFL: In The Epic of Gilgamesh, rainbows are also associated with mankind's survival after a great flood.
I'm pretty sure it was either the same flood, or the Bible borrowed the Gilgamesh story.

A lot of Genesis looks like a retelling of Babylonian myths, some with the serial numbers filed off, and some with the sides flipped around.

when you choose a symbol that represents your oppression, hunt, torture and death at the hand of the church for hundreds of years as your own symbol, you might want to hire a new PR firm.

If I were religious, I would try to downplay the whole Noah's Ark thing.

You see kids, it's screenwriting 101. There are levels of suspension of disbelief. We're asked to believe that Luke Skywalker has Force powers and can do all this cool shiat because he has Force powers. That's suspension of disbelief for the purpose of the story. But if the Millennium Falcon had a sunroof and Han Solo stuck his head out to catch some air in the vacuum of space, That would have to be explained somehow or the audience wouldn't buy it.

Moses parting the Red Sea, Jesus coming back to life, that had Go-'s hand involved. Suspension of disbelief. But the story of Noah, he was just a guy (a drunk, no less) who had to travel the earth, collecting every species of creature, including ones we haven't discovered yet and got them to fark on a boat. The story is missing the supernatural aspect that would normally allow for our suspension of disbelief.

What is my point? The scene where Han and Leia just walked out of the Falcon with just breathing masks pissed me off because it broke the rules.

Oh and the Bible is bullshiat.

Not that I believe the Abrahamic religions have any exclusive claim on the rainbow, let's assume for the moment that it was a church symbol.

Ever heard of co-opting? What you're deeming a bad advertising move has been a common practice of peoples and movements for centuries.

Or maybe and this is crazy but stay with me, most civilizations build near water and at some point in time that water will flood and most of those civilizations will write stories about it. I know, crazier than our omniscient creator flooding the entire world because he was pissed at his own creation.

So you're saying your fairytale book gives you the right to tell other people they can't use natural phenomena as symbols?

Very well. My fairytale book I just invented just now says that God gave the world rainbows to remind everyone that you can only see the true beauty of the world He created if you are capable of accepting every variation of color and hue. And it says right there on the page that the colors are a metaphor for sizes, shapes, colors, needs, loves, social standing, and IQ.

All the flood myths from that period can be correlated with the volcanic explosion of Santorini, which altered the geography of the entire Mediterranean region. The consequence of the explosion also explains the plagues of Egypt and the destruction of Atlantis.

Or, it's aliens.

The My Little Pony Killer: This is amusing to me because the rainbow isn't god's promise that he won't wipe out everyone again. It was the promise that he won't wipe out everyone by flood again.

He'll wipe us out by turning us all gay and causing us to stop breeding. It's already begun, you can not stop God's will!

BTW Jesse Jackson's organization Rainbow PUSH also obviously uses the rainbow. Jackson however takes no issue with whoever else uses it. Cause the rainbow symbolizes unity and he gets the contradiction of "My unity, but not your unity".

Nonsense.

I think both Judeo-Christians and homosexuals have it all wrong. They should both be blaming Doug Henning.

Kinda like if a offshoot sect of Judaism decided to use a Roman torture device for their worldwide symbol. Really bad focus grouping on that one.

Please do this. Please conservatives, start wearing raindows everywhere and putting rainbow stickers on your cars. The unintended consequences and lulz will be EPIC.

Yeah, let me know how that works out for you, nutters. I encourage all conservative evangelicals to start displaying the rainbow proudly and loudly! Also, I heard that in one of the more obscure books of the Bible, God outlines the wearing of various colors of handkerchiefs in one's back pocket in order to display their devoutness. Try one today!

#3: They don't use it as a "religious" symbol.

Heh. My late mother, a politically active homophobe in a city with one of the largest homosexual populations in the midwest, used to go on and on about this a decade ago. Wanted to launch some sort of "take back the rainbow" campaign with evangelical churches to reclaim the symbol for Jesus, since it originally belonged to God's people.

I kind of glad she never got around to running with that...
