My dog died under a table. Not exactly getting a kick...

It's weird. I really loved my dog, she was awesome, and I don't think I could ever bring myself to get another one.

Ugh... on the one hand, that's a lot of money and may indeed put the service out of business. On the other, that's a shiatty thing to do, especially when they had specific instructions not to let the dog out, plus the owner offered to take the dog along if it were a problem having it there. $65k is two or three times what they probably should have awarded, but I still side with the owner =/

$65k for a dead dog?

Not enough money IMO.

FTFA: When a worker arrived, Lohre asked if it would be OK if the family dog, Ruthie, remained in the home while the worker cleaned.

The maid said the dog could stay, even after Lohre offered to take Ruthie with her, according to Lohre's attorney.

If it was no problem to take the dog with her, why didn't she do that just as a courtesy to keep the dog out of the maids' way?

For the record, I do think the maids were wrong to not notify the homeowner that the dog was possibly injured, as well as letting the dog escape in the first place. Also, I love my dog, but I still think that $65k is waaaaay too much to ask in compensation if she were to be hit due to somebody's negligence.

My sympathies. But look to the future. Maybe some day you will be ready for a replacement. We went to the unfinished furniture store, picked up and stained our own. It's really nice, has a couple of inserts to make it longer if we have company come over.

I had some old grandma clean my house for several years. She loved my dog but she could be forgetful. I would show up at home to find both my dog hanging out in my front yard because she left the front or side door open when she left.

Couple things I've learned lately: 1) when working in someone else's home, make sure the family pets are not there, and 2) don't follow and confront someone "suspicious" after a 911 dispatcher said not to. Death just seems to follow.

This story is appalling on many levels.

Let this be a learning opportunity for other pet owners, though--if you have people coming in and out of your house when you're not there--ensure that the pets are secured. *Especially* if you have a little dog that darts through doors such that you explicitly have to warn people to only use an entrance with an enclosed foyer to mitigate this risk. This tragedy was not the fault of the dog's owner, but as a dog owner myself I would damn well rather come home to an alive and well dog in a crate/kennel than be victorious in a court case resulting from my dead/lost dog.

We crate one and leave the other in the kitchen with a gate...a few weeks ago the cleaning people must have loosened the gate stepping over it and the little guy got free. They also left one of the doors unlocked (or I did in the morning). He set the alarm off and I came home to a yard full of very serious looking policemen who had to go through the house room by room, even though we all knew it was the dog, becuase of the door that was ajar. Now we know to secure the dog.

That seems pretty reasonable to me. The cleaning person let the dog out and knew that it got hit by a car. They could have called the homeowner or driven the animal to a nearby vet, but no, they decided the right thing to do was to put it in the house and hope the owner didn't notice. So fark them. Fark them right in the eye.

The dying-under the table whimpering in pain thing is hopefully the reason for the huge payout. I can't understand the maids not contacting an emergency vet and the homeowner at once. I assume they'd do so if they dropped a table on the dog or something.

I'm assuming the difference in the $65k and the $25k she originally asked for was for lawyer fees. They lost something they cared a lot about and cannot be replaced.

Who died on the kitchen floor.
One leg is broken, the other is lame,
The third leg is missing, the fourth needs a cane.
No need explaining, the tail remaining
Was caught in the oven door.

Hopefully the judgment is against the maids themselves and not the company so they have to pay without insurance.

I agree she should have taken the dog with her but barring that they didn't have a hard time getting in touch with her to tell her they were leaving early so why didn't they just call her? We put our dogs outside and if the maids out in denver are like ours then they probably don't speak english very well. I have been to denver and I'm pretty sure they have limited english skills but anyone could call animal control if a dog is injured, the business owner knows that.

So... was it a CLEANING service or a DOG WATCHING service?

Cuz I can see a dog watching service getting in trouble for this but, at least where I'm from, maids clean the house, not watch the damn dog.

This should be overturned on appeal and the family should have to pay for the maid companies defense as well as pay punitive damages for being farkwads.

If the judgement doesn't put her out of business the negative publicity should. Who would want to hire a cleaning service that kills your pet?

PETA, and certain farkers with a lot of very young cats.

True. Everyone has money troubles (well many do) and can empathize with a statement like the one she made. I imagine complaining about negative publicity to the media may be somewhat counterproductive.
