The high property taxes help out some too I'm sure. $75K is a lot, but it doesn't go nearly as far in that area with the aforementioned property taxes, expensive real estate (in general), 5% state income tax rate, ridiculous sales tax (10% for Cook County), some of the highest gas prices in the nation (thanks to something like 21 different formulations of fuel between Milwaukee and NW Indiana), etc.
