(Outside Online)   Awesome: landing world-record tuna with rod and reel. Terrible: having record not count because a crew member touched your rod during the fight. Godawful: having "crew member touched your rod during the fight" in print for world to see   (outsideonline.com) divider line 36

Depends on the crew member. I bet there was a lot of rod touching on those Vikings boats.

Fishing would only be a sport if fish also had weapons. Congrats on catching one of the dumbest animals on the planet. They are distracted by shiny objects.

In the first forty days a boy had been with him.

And here I thought he raised his arm in excitement before the fish hit the deck.

I just read that story not three days ago. As with all books I read I handed it off to the next stranger I saw. Which in this stories case happened to be a homeless fellow. Teach a man to fish and all.

Shouldn't the FISH be the one who gets the biggest fish award?

/WTF did the jack-ass in the boat have to do with the fish surviving and prospering?

the largest-ever with a reel and rod on record

and

qualifying it as an "assisted catch"

do not appear to be mutually exclusive. Using a rod and reel? Yes. Done. He cast, waited, set, and did the majority of the fight while using a rod and reel. Not sure why this disqualifies for the record; put an asterisk.

Yeah it's pretty dumb given there was a 56 foot boat involved in catching the fish.

Kind of depends. Did he touch the reel or did he actually work to assist the fisherman. As there is a separate record for an assisted catch, and this fish was not big enough for that record, this could be a valid rejection.

Who cares, bust out the fillet knife and get some Asians working on the rice and wasabi! Friend of mine years ago caught a 300 or 400lb bluefin. Hundreds of people spent the weekend feasting on and partying with that fish.

Not like going down to the pond and chasing bluegills and tommycod. This sushi, swallow ya whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', down you go.
