I'm trying to figure out which is the most retarded:

1) The article
2) People who think eating dog is more outrageous than eating another animal (like cow)
3) PETA
4) Subby
5) Modmin who greenlit this
6) The headline

Right now I'm leaning towards 4 but I can be convinced otherwise.

Shut up, vegetarians.

Thank. You.

Dogs are great pets but pigs can be awesome too; that's not a reason for me to give up bacon, and frankly I can't blame some poor family in NK from looking at Rex like a steak.

Sun Worshiping Dog Launcher: Let me see, it is mid April and the election is not until November, and we have a story out about Obama eating dog meat as a child. Are we really going to start here when it comes to attacking a presidential candidate? I guess I should not be surprised given what we've seen already this election cycle. I will say that I'm going to be dialing back the Fark if this is going to be the type of thing that starts making it to the Main page for the next 6 months. The Politics page I can see, but this sort of nonsense should stay there.

Where was the outrage about the Romney non-story about driving around with the dog on the roof of the car?

"Another dog?"
"Not for me thank you."
"I'll have one last one."
"Well, I'm a simple soul, I don't understand all that. All I
know is he's not the same man as I married."
"Am I the man you married Mrs. Egis?"
"No, no. Get away. You'll get struck off"
"Come on, come on."
"No, I can't. I'm eating dog."
"Come on, just a quick examination."
"No, get off, I'm married."

"But, Dr. Quatt was a man of quite remarkable medical insight, skill and determination. And within a few minutes, he had completely removed my wife's knickers."

"Get out you! Ooh, ooh, doctor. Oh doctor Quatt".
"Now, now. Put your tongue in my mouth."
"No!"
"Oh, come on, come on. I've got your knickers off!"

Both sides are bad, so no one's allowed to make fun of any presidential candidate's dog-related shenanigans.

HotWingConspiracy: gerrymander: nekom: gerrymander: Then why did PETA start their "Unhappy Meals" campaign? The same principle applies. Either kids share responsibility for the animals they eat, or they don't. If they do, PETA is making a special exemption for Obama. If they don't, the "Unhappy Meals" campaign is disingenuous, and should be stopped.

Can't have it both ways.

I don't think the unhappy meal campaign is blaming kids, rather trying to `educate' them as well as their parents to what PETA believes is right. Maybe they feel that if they can get to the kids, they can get to the parents through them.

I don't support PETA in any way nor do I care if Obama ate dog, just saying I don't see anything contrary between the two.

Fine. Then PETA should still be using this as a "teachable moment", and demanding Obama revise his book to remove that anecdote or include warnings against eating dog, right? I mean, even if Obama the kid didn't have a choice of what he ate, Obama the adult has a choice of what ethical lesson he chooses to impart.

Wow, you really go to some odd lengths to justify your PETA hate.

Yeah, demanding that a group dedicated to imposing its version of ethics upon the world live up to the standard of those ethics is soooo extreme.

PETA does not exist to protect animals. PETA exists so that Ingrid Newkirk can attention whore herself and her efforts. If PETA wanted to protect animals, they wouldn't euthanize them by the dozen on a daily basis. That giant walk-in freezer they have at their headquarters is not intended for storing food.

Eating animal I can get down with. Abusing an animal , whether it be cow, dog, or bird is really deplorable.

I have no love for PETA, but the moment I saw Drudge running this story the first thing I thought was... "Now we're resorting to holding children responsible for things out of their control?" Is there no depth my party will not sink to any longer? I think there isn't.

nekom: Well, they do have a good point actually. He was a kid. Personally I don't care if he ate dog yesterday, it's just meat.

Obama didn't torture it until it shiat itself empty before eating it, I'll bet. There's a big difference between "eating meat" and "animal torture."

I'm sure they'd like him to. They'd probably like him to do a lot of things that he isn't going to do. Actually I can't see any reason why PETA would defend Obama for any political reasons. I've not heard a single politician advocating any vegan agenda, even the farthest left leaners out don't seem to, and Obama certainly doesn't.

"Look, I either attack Obama, which won't go anywhere, or I attack PETA, which is like nailing Jell-O to the wall. I know - I'll flip a coin..."

You're not going to get many people to disagree with the fact that PETA's chock-full of crazy people. So, I'm trying to figure out if you're doing this as a way of undermining a defense against a pointless rebuttal to animal torture made by Romney, or if you're just trolling.

If it's the former, it's a waste of time - I certainly don't care if PETA castigates or cheers Obama on for a lunch he had as a kid, because it doesn't change the fact that Obama's childhood lunch does not mean it's OK for Romney to strap a friggin' dog to the roof of his car and drive until it shiats itself empty in terror.

If it's the latter, it's a waste of time - you're just coming off as someone throwing up a strawman to defend Rmoney.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: Did... Did Obama really eat dog?

"With Lolo I have learned how to eat small green chili peppers raw with dinner, plenty of rice, and away from the dinner people I was introduced to dog meat, tough, snake meat, tougher, and roasted grasshopper."

Yes, he apparently sampled dog 40 or so years ago, as a kid while in (I think) Indonesia. This one quote is where all the kerfluffle is coming from - it's being touted, somehow, as a defense against Romney's animal abuse.

I find that hilarious.

Since Barry's lips were moving I'm gonna have to go with Taqiyya.

Only if nothing else was available, but I wouldn't have too many qualms about it at that point. I've eaten a lot of odd critters in my time, and a bit of barbequed long pig wouldn't be off the table in terms of "eat or die."

jackiepaper: Other than our affection for dogs, there is no fundamental difference between eating dog meat and cow meat.

One can eat either without "abusing" the animal

I disagree Jackie. Eating a carnivore is quite a bit different than eating an herbivore, as far as safety (carnivores have more potential for parasites), level of cognition and empathy (ruminants don't have alot of high level awareness), and texture (carnivores are much gamier and tough).

That said, I'm not opposed to eating either in the right situation. I'd never eat dog here in America, but if I was offered it in another country I'd respectfully eat it as a guest...
