Newsflash: South Floridians will not go to baseball games no matter how much you make the stadium look like the night club from the "Bird Cage".

Is that the stadium with the waterspout display beyond center field? Fake fish move around after a home run? Stupid.

People in Miami: "Hmmmm let's see.....should I go hang out on beautiful Miami Beach, which is free and full of hot topless women, or should I pay to go watch a boring baseball game? Hmmmmmmmm"

But, come on! HOME RUN DISPLAY!!!1!

*shudder*

As long as they don't ruin the fans' goodwill by tearing the team apart immediately after winning, they'll do well. The idea is to have a long-term view. Don't worry if attendance is a little low. Have a good team, win, and keep marketing and you'll get people.

They already won. Twice. It didn't work. There's nothing you can do to make those people give a sh*t.

It's true. The Rays climbed from 9 games back last September to go to the postseason, and not a single fark was given that day.

Fine, so then they don't need a Major League Baseball team.

Well, it may be too late to relocate the Marlins because we can't exactly abandon the stadium after one season. But there's still time to save the Rays from Tampa.

The thing is, they don't. The idea has always been that retirees would go because they have some team they like from wherever they came from, and Latin Americans would go because they love baseball. The problem is that the retirees that do have teams don't see a good reason to go to a Marlins game unless they are playing said team, and even then they aren't all that interested. And just because you like baseball doesn't mean you will go see whatever game is available.

The whole Florida market sucks for baseball. Tampa can't sell out during a heated pennant race, and can't sell out playoff games.

They didn't gut the team after winning in 2003. The pitching staff remained intact with Beckett, Willis, Pavano and Penny, and outside of Derrek Lee the lineup was mostly the same.

Opening Day, 2004 attendance: 55,315
Game #2, 2004 attendance: 17,622

They had 40 games with fewer than 20,000 in the ballpark, and only 17 with more than 30,000 in 81 home dates. Nobody cares down there.

The Cubs suck, too.

I actually went to the beach in Boca once. I can't remember why. I think my friend's parents lived around there. It was exactly like that.

I was so fat, pale, and pasty from living in Indiana that I wasn't going to pick up any women anyway. So it didn't really matter.

Boca is where most of the old Jewish New Yorkers visit or retire to. It is an absolute shiathole of the highest order. Then there's the beach.

Cardinals were in the same boat. Playoff games just announced, Tuesday afternoon game. Attendance at 106.7%.

Thw weather down there is beautiful right now. Of course people don't want to go sit inside to watch a game. Wait till it starts to get hot and the humidity goes through the roof. ..I'm also guessing ticket prices are up. That Liberacce memorial in center field isn't going to pay for itself.

At this pace they're going to finish 43 games out of first, so poor attendance isn't surprising.

It's not a matter of it being a bridge, it's a matter of it being an extremely congested roadway (that, being a bridge, provides no alternative route).

I know that's sarcasm, but I'll take the bait anyway. Busch Stadium is at the convergence of 3 interstates, with another one ending a mile away. There's a bridge across the Mississippi to Illinois, and a couple crossing the Missouri to St. Charles County. Public transportation here blows, so unless you're fortunate enough to live near the MetroLink, you have to drive downtown. It was a blast driving downtown for an NLCS game against the Brewers last year. A trip that would ordinarily take about 35 minutes (generally going against the flow of rush hour traffic coming out of downtown and other places in between) instead took over an hour. We also went downtown for Game 7 of the World Series, and the MetroLink was already packed towards the start of the line where we got on well over an hour before game time.

Miami's real problem is that ownership hasn't given a shiat too often in the team's 20 seasons. You can't blame the fan-base for not showing up after management basically sold off two teams after World Series titles.

Ask some college basketball fans what they do to get to the Final 4. Ask some college football fans what they do to get to the Rose Bowl or BCS Championship. And then you can shut up about the difficulties of getting to a home game.

I agree. But the baseball game is in your farking hometown. People spend thousands going cross country for bowl games and playoff games in the NFL and college. Most college fans don't get the luxury of playoff games at home. The blue blood schools fans show up in the thousands anyway.

Well....statistics say that when the team was winning they actually did fairly well with attendance...so it's at least theoretically possible...

But having family in miami I know that people of Miami simply don't care about baseball. Never have...probably never will. There is little chance they will ever ever have 30,000+ people per night every game. Not unless they put together a $150 million payroll and start winning...and even then it's 50/50 at best.

Florida doesn't deserve any sports teams and it's pathetic to see them justify their lack of support. Florida isn't the only nice part of the nation and sports can be watched in locations that are close to the beach, it's just that people in Florida are a bunch of fake flakes and they just don't care about sports.

That was my point. Both times they won, they tore the team down right away to spend less money. The people who got excited by the win immediately had a crap product the next year.

Show interest year after year, and people will start to come.
