Not surprised at all. The guy has been living and breathing music for years.

On a side note, he's the first act I've been able to go all hipster on since I was a teen. By that I mean, I was into his stuff before it was cool.

Name is too close to Goatse. Awkward.

Subby, you're not allowed to mention that name here!

I had to google Gotye to figure out if he was the skinny one or the fat one.

When he was done schooling them, did he shout "GOT YA!" and emit a maniacal giggle as he ran out into the street dancing like a leprechaun?

No? Damn.

How do you pronounce his name? Got Ye? Go Tye?

2012-04-19 09:59:03 AM
His wiki page says his name is:(pronounced /ˈɡɒti.eɪ/), well thanks for clearing that up.
Pops star and extreme anal insertion devotee. Can't be the first time.

Am I supposed to be old, out of touch musically and irrelevant because I don't know him or am I supposed not know him because I am old, out of touch musically and irrelevant?

He strikes me as the kind of person hipsters wish they were, actually interesting and talented.

I like "Somebody I Used to Know", and he pulled it off live on SNL this past weekend.

I'm not a fan of pop music, but I really like his song.

Sting. No wait, sorry. Go-ti-ay.

The first time I heard "Somebody I Used to Know" on the radio, I thought that Sting and the Police had debuted some sort of reunion album.

Similar thought here. I thought Sting was doing some sort of experimental project.

I saw him a couple weeks ago, he does put on a hell of a live show. I think he played pretty much every instrument on stage.

Does it not strike everyone as odd that the second verse of Somebody... is sung by a female? I'm a straight male but that song is not written by a straight male...let's just say no one should be surprised he was in San Francisco. NTTAWWT etc etc

If you haven't already, check out Kimbra's cover of Plain Gold Ring. All kinds of sexy and awesome.

The song is about both sides of a breakup, hence the third verse sung by Kimbra

vocally, i'd agree - definitely more Peter Gabriel than Sting, with a touch of James Mercer from The Shins, coupled with a hint of the musical stylings of Andrew Bird.

It's a farking duet. Ergo, SOMEONE has to sing the counterpoint, you ignorant slut.

My understanding is that whether straight or gay, the person you dump can still be justifiably cold and cut you out of their life for your superdickery, even if you feel all crappy and remorseful about it later. I've seen about 3 dozen posts of that song on various Facebook and Tumblr pages, straight and gay, male and female. It has universal appeal.

Get over the ghey fear and just enjoy the farking song...

It's the story about people drifting apart after a break up not a guy deciding to stop masturbating.

If you haven't really heard of him, don't feel bad. He's a relatively recent thing, so much so that his show in San Francisco was originally scheduled for a 500 person venue (The Independent) then had to be moved to the Bill Graham Auditorium (8,000 person capacity).

Attention obese women.
Putting on thick framed glasses, too much lipstick, M&M candy colored nail polish and getting crappy tattoos doesn't make you a hipster.
It makes you look like an obese woman who has poor impulse control.
But we knew that because you are fat.
Glamming it up is like putting the Trans-Siberian orchestra light show on a humble manger scene.
With a disco ball.
Fattie.

Hi rest of the world, glad you caught up to how awesome Gotye is. You really should see him perform live if you can, it's certainly what got me hooked.

anyway, my favourite song from his first album

He's Belgian and his name is Wally, from Wouter. That would be Walther in English, or Gaulthier in French. "Gotye" is spoken like Gaulthier, which made me feel good thinking that his was some sort of French act.

This short documentary puts it all together; the guy is really impressive musically and this song has gotten me into his back catalog with great happiness.

Ahh the "robot song" as my son refers to it, because of the animated robots in the video. "Thanks For Your Time" is known as "the telephone song." Love 'em both.

You are by far the coolest person I have ever encountered on the internet and demand that you create a website that details your cool ways and life and the things that you like that make you so extraordinarily cool. Think of all the good you could bring to humanity.

I love Sting and Peter Gabriel. They were some of my biggest musical influences growing up. Now I have hipster taste in music, yet, I absolutely cannot stand Gotye.
