Especially if the blade is serrated.

Although to be fair I doubt the guy was in his right mind at the time.

I doubt a 3 inch knife could be worse than a pipe moving at bullet-speed, but I'm not a neurosurgeon so my opinion is invalid.

As a cop, he should have known to I dunno, NOT take the knife out. That's right up there in the first aid rules. Doesn't matter where it is, leave it in until someone with a medical degree can take it out. Duh. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

so folding pocket knives are "switchblades" now?

I'm not really a big fan of cops in general, but this guy needs a farking medal. Be better if he could have resolved the situation non violently, but some assholes just wanna stab you in the head. Good for him in standing up the the farker.

Please reserve your cop hating for those that deserve it. For better or worse, this guy has shown he is one of the brave.

A neurosurgeon would tell you that Phineas Gage had both frontal lobes destroyed and the effect on his personality was so profound that most who know him said he was no longer the same person. Gage developed a hostile and menacing demeanor. That is the joke.

A farking idiot should have known to I dunno, NOT say what should have been done unless they've been stabbed in the temple. That's right up there in the monday morning quarterbacking rules. Only someone with a degree in hindsight can make that sort of comment. Duh. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

The cops shoot a lot of people first without asking questions. I think they should go ahead and shoot the farker who did this shiat. More shooting after the fact and less before, imho.

I know the perp dude is crazy, but seriously, you want this guy running around? Ever?

Yeah, I'm sure if you were there you'd have been all cool and collected like "whatevs, just gonna wait for the doctor," and lit up a smoke. Or better yet, I'm sure a super keyboard jockey like yourself would have deflected the knife and subdued the suspect with those sweet judo moves your brother taught you...

"Shut the hell up, neckbeard," is what I'm getting at, here.

So a NYC cop should be able to go right back to work like nothing happened.

Under stress, you do stupid things. Just because "they were in a frame of mind" doesn't mean it isn't any less goddamn stupid, you tards.

"We'll always have cases like this because we have one big problem in selecting police officers ... we have to recruit from the human race." -William H. Parker

Maybe not in this case.

Hale, who was brought to Metropolitan Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, was arrested on charges of attempted aggravated murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

"Today is another reminder of how, in a split second, a police officer's life may be jeopardized," Kelly said.

It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

But was it clear if he had an attorney?

evilotto: so folding pocket knives are "switchblades" now?

In NYC, damn near any folding knife will be termed a switch blade for the purposes of prosecution. Don't carry anything visible in the City. Ever. I love the place, but there are some absurd rules about knives.

I used to carry a Ka-Bar. I only ever pulled it once, and the dude (who was attempting to mug me) crapped his pants. I may also have peed a little. I never carried it again after that. Now I carry a SOG-Tac Auto , along with a SOG PowerAssist multi-tool.

FTFA: "I think he pulled his own knife out," she said while sitting next to Dr. Bederson. "Since he's an E.M.T., he somehow managed to hold the pressure. And somebody on the street, I believe, handed him a towel."

Your point may still be valid, but slightly less so. Maybe.

People do tend to do things when they are in shock that they otherwise would not consider doing.

Well I hope the suspect learned a lesson here. Never stab someone in the head, always go for soft tissue. He not only didn't get his knife back, but he might have bent the tip a little. Why does this always happens to this suspect? Why, why, why, whyyyy?

Expected to survive

Damn. :(

Luckily there was no vital organs in that region.

I guess, if the neurosurgeon was only familiar with the popular and somewhat flawed accounting of Gage's life post-incident found in Psych textbooks...

Second NYPD cop stabbed in the ass. Also expected to survive, with permanent drain bamage.

Don't forget to bring a towel!

At least he wasn't stabbed in an organ he actually used.

It's likely a cheap Chinese made switchblade with a hidden release. I've seen a few that look like that. Could just be a spring assisted folding knife though.

They had to explain this to the teacher that removed the knitting needle from my leg. I was fine, as I hadn't hit an artery or anything, but I was mainly disappointed that I didn't get a cool x-ray of it.

A cop pulled a knife from out of his head?

He might just be the next king of England.
