I want to make a memory joke so bad but I can't. Just a great coach and influence on life for many.

I'm glad this is the one that went green. She deserves better than an Alzheimer's joke headline.

/Not that she'd remember it anyway, but still.

Sad that this wasn't instagreen. I hate women's basketball. Really you've heard all the arguments against the WNBA so I don't need to re-hash.

Still, when it was the Lady Vols vs. some wannabe contender it was amazing to see. What a legacy of winning and triumph Summitt leaves. She was able to draw in some amazing athletes for sure, but she also had the talent to get what she needed out of her players. To say that she's a top 5 college basketball coach with the qualifier "for a girl" is offensive. I hope she gets a huge amount of love this year for the accomplishments and talent.

Also, Alzhiemers sucks. fark you Alzhiemers.

I had a great joke but forgot it already.

she was a great coach. it's sad to see that her cowardice toward playing uconn tarnished her reputation at the end of her career

I see the comments section has been about as populated as a women's basketball game.

Yup, my mom had Alzheimer's 7 or 8 years for disease. She went from being my mom to my 4 year old daughter. I was 19 at the time. It devastated me, took me years after her death to finally come to terms with it

No truth to the rumor that she will be stepping down again tomorrow.

Pat Summit is incredible. Her hard work, discipline, sacrifice, toughness and success are light years beyond the capabilities of all you douchebags talking shiat. Have a good time making your stupid ass jokes about an illness she has no control over to make yourselves feel better about your mediocre lives.

She's never going to get away from comparisons to Geno, is she?

I remember watching those two go head to head back when Diana Taurasi was playing for UConn. That was a pretty intense game, although Taurasi dominated due to sheer talent. Still, considering the wide disparity in talent in most women's basketball games, that was as competitive a game as you'll ever see.

2012-04-19 07:15:52 AM
As long as the top talent remains concentrated in a dozen or so schools, Summit will most certainly be eclipsed.

It's sad to think "Well, at least none of her staff diddled little kids during her watch".

/not that she'd remember now

We're sad to see her step down but very happy to know she's got the best care anyone could ask for. It's an honor to be at this school with her.

Sad day. Great coach, better person by all accounts.

Plus, most wins ever = maximum trolling.

Much love Pat. Good luck.

Thanks Auntie Pat for all you gave to Women's Basketball. There are lots of Basketball programs nationwide thanks to the efforts of you (and a host of others too). I wish you good luck on the next steps of your journey.

Little girls don't remember a time when they couldn't play basketball. Some of us do.

And while Cancer sucks, today I'm saying FARK YOU Alzheimer's Disease... FARK you.

Summitt > Wooden.

Discuss.

This makes me sad. What a horrible disease.
While she has done so very much for women's athletics and basketball, I have always had very mixed feelings about Pat Summit.
It seems so odd to me that a woman who never shrunk from a challenge, chose and continues to choose, to live in the closet and hide.

I believe the implication is being made that she's a closet lesbian, and that her personal choice makes her somehow less of a person.

Women's basketball? Is that even really a thing?

I saw a headline, Pat Summit steps aside, and the first thing I thought was 'I wonder if she remembers why?' Not because I'm a jerk, but because I always start walking somewhere and I'm like, 'wait, where was I going?' I have to guess about how far I planned to walk and then hope that something reminds me.

It's easy to forget her legacy.

What an amazing coach. I am convinced she could have coached just about any sport and still have been successful. Hopefully Websters will include her picture as part of the definition of "winner."

I'll keep my snark about women's basketball to myself this time. From all accounts she sounds like a great inspiring coach to a lot of people, so good on her.

Great coach, but, c'mon, subby..."essentially creating NCAA women's basketball" is laying it on a little thick.

Women have been playing BB since the early 1900's.

Look at this line:

163-3, 2/25/1924 Central H.S (Lonaconing, Md.) v. Ursuline Academy; Marie G. Boyd 156 pts.

Yes, I am from Lonaconing, Maryland.

Oh ... no dispute about how long women's basketball has been around (former player here...) but a lot of towns didn't have a formal program to teach girls to play until more recently.

That's an impressive stat of 156 points!

Who cares if someone is "in the closet". Once you're out, you're expected to be a spokesperson for your sexuality... maybe its not that she's embarassed about it, but just doesn't want to be the face of homosexuality?

We're all different sexually... does that mean we all have to be vocal about it? Does someone into S&M have to come out and tell everyone about it?
