Bullshiat.

He got $10,000 k plus because he was 6 and had a sob story. The lemomade stand did not earn that much on its own merit.

I hope he's paying taxes on that income.

So who wrote a $9k check to the lemonade stand? They probably want to remain anonymous, but somebody owes somebody else a beer and a big thank you.

2012-04-18 11:29:50 AM
OK. Now wheres the part where the state tax authorities and the code enforcers show up and fine him $10,000?

I'm shocked a local grocery store didn't call the cops and have in shut down for operating without a permit which is usually what happens.

FTFA: "Randy Cox says he has medical insurance but still will have to pay thousands of dollars in medical costs out of pocket."

That's pretty much everyone with health insurance now at days. Massive deductible and 80/20 after that if you're lucky.
/Pays for almost every medical cost with HSA
//Luckily has never hit deductible.

The lemonade stand legitimises and popularises the appeal in such a time-honoured, pleasant way, that anyone who doesn't get it should go suck a ... lemon.

Ah yes, the famous cocaine lemonade. People kept coming back for more!

2012-04-18 11:33:25 AM
Well, a single person gave $5000. Plus the lemonade stand was set up specifically to raise money for his dad. It's not like he was some 6-year-old entrepreneurial genius that managed to make that kind of money as a business venture then decided to give it to his dad.

Man, I'd love to have enough money to just give someone $5k whenever I wanted. I damn sure wouldn't do it with a check though, only anonymously. People from everywhere would start hounding you for cash if they knew you donated this or that to random causes.

FTFA: That's typically a type of testicular cancer

How poetic. Sounds like lyrics from a Broadway showstopper.

Now on Broadway... Typically Testicular, the new Soundheim musical!

2012-04-18 11:34:28 AM
FTA: Randy Cox was reportedly diagnosed with seminoma earlier this year. That's typically a type of testicular cancer, but in Cox's case it's non-testicular and tumors appeared in his chest and elsewhere in his body, colleagues say.

There's NO WAY this is a real story.

That's really sweet, but... Argh. He's a KID. He shouldn't be spending his hours worrying about his dad!

My kid's six and he's already neurotic (no big surprise there). He reminds me that drinking Coke is bad for me, and tucks his blankie up with me when I'm sick. If I came down with any real illness, his poor little brain would explode.

I approve of letting kids know what's going on in your life, but I dearly hope that the six year old heard "Daddy's a little sick and will get better" instead of "Daddy's gonna die and we'll lose the house".

I'm quitting my job to do this

2012-04-18 11:37:29 AM
My kid and his buddies made $120 this past weekend selling lemonade on the corner just for giggles. A buck a cup. Next weekend, I'll tell him to say I've got cancer....

/No, I won't.

Obviously living in the socialist hellhole that is the UK has drawbacks. One big plus though: if I get sick my children won't have to go out and work to pay off my medical bills.

So--taking into account the $5,000 check--he had 40,000 customers in one day?

I hope he paid his taxes on that $10k. Also, did he have a business license for that stand? Did he fill out the proper federal forms? Did his lemonade pass FDA inspection? I might have to contact federal agents on this one.

2012-04-18 11:48:23 AM
"benevolent"? Did they really use that word to describe this? Was the lemonade for a cult or something?

2012-04-18 11:49:52 AM
Shouldn't be too hard to call the money "charity" (as certainly the one person didn't purchase $5000 worth of lemonade). Then the kid can spend $9,000 on "expenses" and give his dad $1000, just like the real charities do.

You know you can deduct medical expenses if they're over a certain percentage of your income, right?

2012-04-18 11:50:49 AM
That's awesome. Of course the larger story is how people still get stuck with bills like this even though they have insurance. I know, I saw it with my own folks. Luckily they had the funds, but it shouldn't be like that.

Deductibles are such a racket these days. I pay around 8K a year for very good insurance. Only a few years back I had no deductibles. Now there is a whole book they send of what you have to pay out of pocket. Need an xray, blood test, stitches? Oh here is the bill 3 weeks later for the parts we didn't cover.

My lemonade stand gives away the first glass free. The second glass is $5.00. It contains the antidote.

Thanks, subby, for the chance to use my favorite Emo Phillips quote.

The kid should be on Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice".

Since this is about a guy named Cox having testicular cancer with a super sappy story showing up in the "weird news" section I'm going to have to call Shenanigans.
