The free market is a great idea, until it's not working in your favor.

He could do something about gas prices. He could hop in AF-1 and fly down to Bentonville with some of his Chicago buddies and explain, in his best mobster voice, that if they don't want bad stuff happening to their imported goods, they need to reduce they need to be buying locally, or else maybe some of their containers might be swimming with the fishies. If the US knocked back China trade by 50%, their oil consumption would drop rapidly as their fresh millionaires went broke.

I don't think Newt's getting elected for anything. Unless he's announced he's running for county dog catcher or something.

Not worth it.

But but but, if we drill, baby drill, then the higher supply will drive prices down and OPEC, seeing the price drop, will not decrease their production to offset it to keep prices up because they are nice people after all, and US companies will pump all they can even if the price goes down because they are swell people too.

You assume that Obama wants to lower gas prices

/take a look at natural gas prices since 2005 and see where you took a wrong turn

Well, TFA really said that gas prices are going up and there's nothing anyone - on either side - can do about it. I assume the "Obama blusters..." headline was courtesy of Fox editors, but that wasn't a very partisan article. Mostly just saying "tough shiat, gas is going up."

How much natural gas do we import from other countries where they could manipulate supply to control prices?

Enough already. We have an embarrassing feast of things that Obama can't do. After three long, senseless years, isn't it time we ask just what this guy can do?

I'll tell you one thing we absolutely cannot do about increasing gas prices: invest in alternative energies. Anyone who recommends that is an anti-American socialist traitor.

I don't know why Obama doesn't just use the keypad that's built into the Oval Office desk that controls gas prices nationwide. Here's an interesting fact: the keypad is an Obama Administration innovation. Up until 2009, gas prices were controlled by a mechanical lever on the Oval Office desk. The lever was installed during the Eisenhower Administration to help implement the National Defense and Interstate Highways Act of 1956. Before that, the President could only control gas prices by yelling the desired price into a brass speaking tube. The tube required repeater stations every 0.2 miles, and the inevitable errors involved in vocal retransmission resulted in considerable variation in gas prices among different locales. Those regional and local differences are preserved today as a matter of custom and honor in the Gas-Price-Control Agency (GPCA), even though modern Presidential digital control technically makes the differences unnecessary.

You guys, what are you mad about? The money we spend on oil helped the Iraqis repay us for the cost of their six-week liberation. If gas prices weren't as high as they are, we would be trillions of dollars deeper in debt because of Operation Iraqi Liberation.

I assume mostly that you're retarded.

1) Presidents don't lower gas prices. At least according to O'Reilly 2008, not O'reilly 2012.
2) Why would he keep the gas prices high in an election year if he could indeed affect gas prices? It's a fairly retarded thing to do if he indeed has that power. Seeing as that would be totally stupid, I can only assume that he in fact DOES NOT have that power and that you in fact are retarded.

It will be curious if gas prices do drop dramatically between now and election day.

I didn't think there was anything the Pres could do to lower gas prices when Bush was Pres and still think that now.

Gas was $1.14/gallon in my area as the American troops closed in on Baghdad. Decades of "gas about a buck a gallon" ended with the election of George W. Bush and a Republican congress.

Not to mention that the US contribution to the world supply of oil has dipped to about 7% so assuming we increase that output by 20% that gets us up to 8.4% (not likely to knock the prices at the pump down to the mystical $2.50 a gallon the Newt would have gotten us) or really have any impact at all.
