True. Though I have to admit, as much as I like my iPad, my Kindle Fire was much easier to hold and it fit into my purse.

Yeah, mine's called a Novo7, and I got it for $187. Funny part is that all the Mac snobs have been telling me that a 7" tablet might as well be a phone, and that bigger is better. Funny how Apple decides to cave all of a sudden. Personally, if I want something that big, I use the laptop.

As someone with freakishly small hands, the Kindle Fire was way more my size.

I've heard this rumor for over a year now, and every time it surfaces someone says "it makes no sense for them to do this and cannibalize their sales from their other tablets" and it dies for another 3 weeks.

I'm sure if it does happen, Apple evangelists will change their mind about tablets less than 10" being "too small to be useful" to being "game changing", "revolutionary", etc.

This.

Just like when Amazon doesn't include physical volume buttons on the Kindle Fire it's a horrible mistake, but when Apple omits buttons or ports from their devices it's called brilliant design.

I don't necessarily think that there's no place for a 7"ish tablet, but what happens to the App Store then? We add another category? If you scale up iPhone apps, they just look/work like crap. If you scale down iPad apps, good luck trying to accurately touch any controls. If we add another category, that's more work for app developers. Doesn't seem to be worth it. I could be wrong though.

That rumor is as old as the original iPad. Once the iPad hit, there were predictions a 7" model was coming out in a year or less.

Apple is all about consolidating product lines and positioning products in markets where they won't compete. Rarely, they'll create two similar products- the shuffle and the nano, for example, but they rapidly retire one before too long.

So the only way a 7" iDevice would appear would be if it were a) nothing like the iPad, or b) the future replacement for the iPad.

Apple is nothing if not predictable.

Not ENTIRELY sure what you're getting at there. You don't have to rework the application layer, but you certainly would need to design and develop a new presentation layer for a 7" form factor. That's not an insignificant undertaking. Given how Apple has made concerted efforts to avoid the fragmentation problems seen in Android devices, it would be surprising to see them introduce another form factor.

I know there's a lot of hate out there for it, but I love my PlayBook (especially since they upgraded the OS).

I've had the good fortune to have just about all the current devices at one time or another. Right now I have the Kindle Fire, and the 'New' iPad. The fire is a great size for reading e-books, and portability, but using it for web browsing can be challenging at times. The larger iPad is nice for web browsing or watching movies on Netflix. I did have a Nook tablet, but I did not keep it for too long. Although the screen was a bit nicer then the Kindle, the B&N market is severely limited. You can root the Nook, but I just was not in the mood to fark with it when I could have the Kindle, and side load the Nook reader app without rooting. Also the Amazon marketplace has a nice selection of apps.
Apple has to be feeling the pressure from Kindle Fire sales.

I like the NC, and it is even better with CM9, and was looking at the Nook Tablet for a hardware upgrade. But, a couple months ago, the Acer Iconia A100 was on sale on Woot for $150, the price of my original NC, and jumped on it. It has pretty much the same specs as the NT, but with a mic, front and back cameras, HDMI out, for some reason a GPS sensor, and no needing to mod it to make it a "stock"-ish Android tablet, it seemed like the better deal. Holy crap, the thing is pretty damn good. Haven't touched the NC since I got it, and might just give it to the girlfriend or keep it around to test programs I plan on someday writing.

My only problem with the A100 is you can't charge via USB, but an a/c adapter only. Ah well... small price to pay. Also, while the battery life is reported only around 7 hours or so, I've gone for a couple days at a time without charging it with using it about 3-4 hours a day. Just remember to charge it when I charge my cell phone at night, and it's all good.

I haven't yet met a single non-Canadian that has a Playbook.

Are they pushing it extra-hard up there? Is it just because RIM is Canadian? Or what?

The only push that I have seen has been dropping the prices earlier this year, which was irrelevant as mine was a gift. It does everything I need it to, word processing, surf the web (even sites with Flash), syncs with my Blackberry so I can use BBM on the tablet. I use it mostly for work and the 7" screen makes it easy to lug around.

I understand that the launch was way too early and a disaster for RIM, but with the upgrade earlier this year, it's way better.

This reminds me about how the Verizon 3G iPhone rumor started almost as soon as the original iPhone was released. Predicting the inevitable 3 years before it happens doesn't make a rumor true, people.
