"We came up with this because we found that people want to get rid of the cables and they don't want those mountains of remote controls either."

Easily solved with any Universal Remote as long as it has a "Learn" function.

THIS. Logitech makes some pretty sweet URCs, and if you typically watch tv or movies with the stereo on you can get one that is set up with activity-based programming, meaning that you can configure the remote to turn on all devices that need to be turned on depending on your activity. The remote buttons will also be configured to the correct device, such as the volume buttons being routed to the stereo, the channel buttons being routed to the tv or cable box, and the free blowjob button routed to your choice of hookers at the end of your street. I don't know how many other brands will do this (it looks like yours does), but I highly recommend picking up one that does. I bought mine five years ago for $200 and it was well worth it.

TVs started out as basically pieces of furniture, like a cabinet. Then they got smaller, so they designed furniture for the televisions. Then people wanted bigger screens, so in came project TVs: large cabinets containing TVs. People who couldn't afford those bought large TV consoles: tables with TVs built into them. Then larger TVs were made that could sit on a table. But then all these peripherals came out (VCRs and betamax, sound systems) so more furniture was designed to house all these units units. Then flat screens became popular, which you could hang on a wall... unless you have a number of peripheral devices (even more than before). So Ikea starts combining all these components into a cabinet.

I'm sensing a cycle of sorts.

Would be nice if you needed it. TVs hang on the wall now. For half the cost of a piece of furniture, you could relocate the components somewhere else, out of sight. I guess people still want to take up space with a useless piece of furniture

THIS

It's not just breakage. It's about future proofing.

Look at all these "media player" boxes like Apple TV. You don't know if some cool shiat will come out tomorrow and Apple decide not to support it because it treads on their profits. I've looked at all sorts of different boxes and all of them have a few pieces missing and in the end, I'm opting to put a media center PC under my TV because I know it will do absolutely everything and that will be the case for many years to come.

How big is the hard drive for the integrated Linux media computer? 4TB? 10TB? The computer comes with at least one ATSC television tuner card and MythTV (or something similar), and the ability to easily rip movies from DVD and BluRay, right? Because, without that, it's just a tv with a bunch of useless and obsolete hardware for playing obsolete recordings off obsolete physical media.

You can take my 34" 1080i widescreen CRT when you pry it from my cold, dead cabinet that can support 200lbs.

The target audience doesn't care about that stuff, they want something that works and they don't have to worry about making it work, or dealing with it when it crashes. Which leads into the main problem with these all in one units. If you don't know how to fix it yourself, you'll pay more than its worth for somebody else to fix it for you.

if you do know how to fix it, then you know better than to buy one in the first place.

When I moved from University housing to my own apartment, I knew I was probably moving in 2-3 years (only had a temporary job). IKEA was perfect for me...buy it cheap and give it away/throw it away a couple years later instead of trying to move furniture cross country.

Two things:

1. Is there room for my cable box? Live HD sports over Internet isn't ready for prime time here yet.

2. Hex keys are an invention of Satan and should not be used by right-thinking people. The world has hex bit socket sets nowadays. There is a reason for that.

The problem is the amount of wear you inflict upon their cheap ass products. A bookshelf will last you forever and a day. Woe to those who purchase an Ikea bed frame

It fits a market...and there is definitely one for stuff like this. Not everyone wants to deal with: (in no particular order)

-finding studs, mounting wall bracket to wall

-getting power to TV location, since TV power cables are NOT CL3/UL rated for in wall use and home likely wasn't pre-wired for power at TV location.

-running cables in wall to equipment rack, repairing drywall in the very likely event the home wasn't pre-wired for this purpose (why wallmount a TV just to have cables visible??)

-dealing with IR repeater systems or RF remotes with inconsistent performance and programming issues

/and most asshats wall mount TVs WAAY too high
//i'm looking at you, Mr. 'above the fireplace cuz it's cool' guy

So what you're saying is there is a large percentage of people who just want shiny toys and don't care if it's actually installed right? Color me shocked.

pretty much. I know a few folks with TVs above the fireplace and, based off the room layout, that location 'should' have been the last resort. It's one thing if it's literally the only place that makes sense, it's another if it's the first choice.

Mine was fine until I ended my dry spell. Once I started doing any sort of "physical activity" on it, the thing was toast.

/What I'm saying is, don't be afraid to buy their children's beds, but sexually active adults need to shop elsewhere for a bedframe.

Could be worse. It's not the greatest GUI, but it's certainly easy enough to navigate, even though it could need some improvements. I would not mind the ability to customize the home screen and rid it of "app" icons I'll never use.
