6.5 minutes from ESPN regarding this. I'll be anxious for their follow up story where they question just how a second year player with subpar stats generates such frenzied attention.

Women love him because he's a good looking, athletic guy with a "wholesome" image, and the religious love him for obvious reasons.

That makes up a pretty powerful, and zealous, fan base. Need proof? Look at American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, etc. etc.

Places like Boston and New York are notoriously hard on their sports players, and things like spitting on a player's wife is right on par with that. Booing Tebow is as well.

A ton of players end up in New York or Boston and simply can't hang, especially for baseball. People watch your every move, criticize you endlessly when you don't seem to be living up to what you've been paid, and the press is always watching. I'm pretty sure most people in New York have their loyalties to Sanchez, and Tebow is a threat to that.

Silly as it is, some places take sports much, much more seriously than others.

LeroyBourne: Did Skip really say he's the most polarizing figure in sports? Does Vick have to strangle a few more dogs or eat live kittens to regain that title?

I believe you missed the point of the word polarizing. People like Mike Vick, Ben Roethlisberger, Sean Avery, or Kurt and Kyle Busch aren't polarizing because they don't have adamant supporters to counteract their detractors.

Meanwhile people like Tebow have equally fanatical supporters and detractors. Which makes him more polarizing. Tiger Woods is pretty polarizing, but he doesn't have a vehement a support base as he use to have. Rafal Nadal is also polarizing, but he doesn't have anywhere near the amount of detractors.

Generally polarizing is something that you'll reserve for a political figure like Obama or a public personality like Oprah, Bill O'Reilly. Maybe even an entertainer like Charlie Sheen, but sports personalities generally don't have such wide public appeal as to cause strong defense or opposition.

I guess in a manner of speaking, pro-wrestlers are the "most polarizing figures in sports", but that's because they are scripted to be polarizing.

Yes, because religion has never been mixed with sport before. It took a Tebow to blend those two utterly unconnected realms.

degenerate-afro: LeroyBourne: Did Skip really say he's the most polarizing figure in sports?

Makes sense. It's hard to defend killing dogs. I know a lot of people that support him, but the very thought of bringing up 'that' is never touched. It's too bad he got injured, I was really curious if he had a stellar year and was returned to stardom, how much emphasis of his past would ever be brought up again. There's always this season.

yeah but i think there's a lot less of the people who defend Roethlisbergers whole "being a scum bag" thing. I think Big Ben is a really good QB and i think the steelers generally put together an excellent team, but i also think that Ben is a total scummer. I think his fans (at least here) are more of the "bad person/good player- i can live with that" view.

Sadness, in that our society rewards that which will accumulate the most money, not that which is most worthwhile. Religion has to do with why Tebow is so popular nationally outside of the sports sphere, but his presence at a MLB game is within the sports sprere. He was booed because he's at a Yankees game... Yankees fans = Giants fans who don't like the Jets + Jets fans who would like some veteran leadership and competent playmakers. There were also most likely some Knicks fans there who aren't the biggest D-Wade supporters. Add to the mix the fact that he's statistically the worst starting quarterback on ANY team in the past 40 years but has managed more TV time than MVPs or Super Bowl Champions, and as a result has been given multiple opportunities that others far more qualified than him should have gotten, and it's pretty simple. And honestly not many of the people commenting here actually have any knowledge of or vested interest in the Denver Broncos, New York Jets, or New York Yankees. Most are just talking shiat on Yankee fans, New York, Tebow, or Christianity.

Matthew 6:5-6

When you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Most certainly, I tell you, they have received their reward.

But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

They fit the definition, but they don't pull in the same numbers. When saying someone is "the most polarizing figure", then you are looking for the greatest amount of animosity or disagreement. Vick and Roethlisberger don't come close.

To put it another way, it's the same as saying Kanye West is a more polarizing figure than Jay-Z. That doesn't mean that Jay-Z can't be a polarizing figure. It just means that Kanye is more likely to start a brawl than Jay-Z is.

He took a down-and-out team which was falling to pieces, and started winning games while simultaneously posting the lousiest stats ever seen.

When he won that playoff game after a last-second 80-yard pass, he had everyone wondering if there wasn't something to this divine internevtion stuff after all.

Maybe a showboat, but the guy has talent.

This is more of a followup

Also, they missed the obvious answer: Yankees Fans

They spit on the wives of the opposing team players, so not surprised Tebow got booed.

You're pretty much right, except for the part where you are dead wrong. New York is probably one of the places where fans take their sports the least seriously. Green Bay centers everything around the Packers. Lincoln, Nebraska is about nothing but college football. In NYC we have a wide variety of entertainment options.

The pressure that comes from playing in NYC has more to do with it being the media capital of the world than it does with zealous fans.

Zippercole: Add to the mix the fact that he's statistically the worst starting quarterback on ANY team in the past 40 years but has managed more TV time than MVPs or Super Bowl Champions, and as a result has been given multiple opportunities that others far more qualified than him should have gotten, and it's pretty simple.

Well, he did win a playoff game with a team who started the year 1-4. And I'd like to know which "opportunities" he was afforded that others were not. Just curious. He's a compelling character & I can understand why he gets the attention.

guestguy: "If I only I could just do this the whole game, and not have to worry about little things like throwing the ball...I'd be the greatest EVAR! Whoops, almost forgot...praise Jesus and whatnot."

Hahaha.... "Dear Jesus, our lord and savior, please help me not throw the ball like a potato. In your holy name, amen."

Mikey1969: OK, blame the media ten, they spend the entire game, and then every available minute in between going on and on and on about how "spiritual" he is...

Maybe the non-sports media. I don't see the sports media getting into his spirituality too much. It seems to me (I don't have a chart to back this up, surprisingly) that the sports-world slobs his knob because he is interesting. He had the hype before he even came to the NFL & I think that no matter what he does, that hype won't go away. We'll ALWAYS want to see what he's doing, whether succeeding or failing.

xpisblack: Gunny Highway: They were interviewing Tebow after a game and there are a group of 30 guys, from both teams, pray together at mid-field. Not a peep.

He was wearing a Yanks cap and he isnt from NY or a fan. So he got booed. It has nothing to do with religion.

And with this comment, you have won today's award for most completely and inarticulately missing the point. Congratulations.

CT Zeal: Tebow seems like a nice enough guy, and I respect the charitable stuff he does. I don't even mind him being religious. What I have a problem is the way he has to make sure the cameras are on him to see him being religious. Stop with the proselytizing already.

/And I'd totally give him the most disappointing 5 minutes of his life. Tebow is a fine looking dude.

This.

He's a nice guy and does some good charity work but gaaaaaaaws STFU with the verses and shiat

Shtetl G: Tebow is a very talented football player. He is just not a good quarterback(on the pro level). The sooner he converts to a full time tight-end/hback, the sooner he get on with his very productive professional career. Pride is a sin too.

Have you ever heard a Tebow interview? He's super thankful for the opportunity to play. He's proud in no way. He tried out for the position and was good enough. Dangit, can't you come up with a good argument or insult?

olddinosaur: Say what youy like about Tebow, the facts speak for themselves:

He took a down-and-out team which was falling to pieces, and started winning games while simultaneously posting the lousiest stats ever seen.

When he won that playoff game after a last-second 80-yard pass, he had everyone wondering if there wasn't something to this divine internevtion stuff after all.

Maybe a showboat, but the guy has talent.

Kyle Orton took a down and out Broncos team (coach "for life" Shanahan fired, Cutler traded, missed playoffs for 3 years running) and won 6 games in a row too. Remember those heady days? Remember Gus Johnson's meltdown when Stokely caught that deflection to beat Cincy?

Look how that turned out.

olddinosaur: Maybe a showboat, but the guy has talent.

No he doesn't. He confused the crap out of the defenses he played with the college football nonsense they ran. If he was so talented, why the Broncos pick up Peyton?

I've said it a million times since the beginning of the dark period of history known as Tebow Time: just because you've run the Annexation of Puerto Rico a few times and it worked doesn't make you an A1 QB.

Also, whoever quoted the Bible verses about not praying in public gets a favorite from me.

Further, when some fundamentalist nut job cherry picks biblical passages to support some wacky idea we all point at them and laugh. What makes you any different?

A simpler explanation is "You don't have to show off your faith in God because God knows how faithful you are".

Putting it in modern terms:

"See yonder rapper with said gold chains and shiny whip who maketh it rain upon tawdry whores? Know that he shalt surely be broketh within a fortnight. Whist thou with thy tweed suit and thy Ford Focus who investeth in Google prior to said stock split shall reap the rewards for many eons. So sayeth the lord"

I was sick of proselytizing sports type ass clowns long before Tebow came along. Still, I rooted for Tebow because he was the underdog. Just because I'm an atheist doesn't mean I can't hope a guy can overcome his throwing style and impress people legitimately for his developing football prowess. That being said, His wins with the Broncos were more about his will than his skill. I'll be impressed with him when he overcomes his weaknesses, if he can't do that, then I think everyone (myself included) will lose interest.

I don't like anything that is overvalued. But I really hate it when an unrelated characteristic becomes a proxy for judging ability honestly.

- Mediocre player, may or may not believe in God, but doesn't go out of his way to advertise it: Seen as a mediocre player, doesn't get much publicity. (ex: Brad Johnson, who won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Note how pretty much everyone was clear that TB's success came as a result of their stellar defense, not Johnson's arm.)

- Mediocre player, makes sure he prays where everyone can see him: Seen as QB of the future/savior of a franchise; gets publicity out the wazoo.

If Tebow can win games in spite of a weak defense (i.e. Peyton Manning) or can win by a large margin with a mediocre or good defense (i.e. Tom Brady, Drew Brees), or even manages to put up good numbers, and is a statistically good QB despite playing on mediocre teams (i.e. Matt Hasselbeck, Carson Palmer) then I will readily acknowledge that he is talented and worthy of the accolades that have been so prematurely bestowed upon him.

One thing no one paying attention can deny: He does have the potential to be a good QB, but so did Todd Marinovich. So did Ryan Leaf. If you want to be a little esoteric, so did Brian Brohm. So did the myriad other back-ups and flops that had the raw talent that never really developed into success in an NFL stadium. And wanting him to be a good quarterback is not the same thing as being a good quarterback.

You cannot expect me to say a QB playing at his current level is ready to be a starter, let alone the All-Star spokesman for Jesus that many evangelical Christians so desperately pretend he is.

I would assume that the majority of NFL players are Christian. Of those who are, I imagine many are fairly devout. I imagine more than a few all-star players are probably very devout Christians, as well. What is the difference between them and Tim Tebow? Their ability to play football is judged by...their ability to play football. And they do not advertise bible passages on their eye-black for the purpose of lending to their public image some faint flavor of the humble piety that people like Tebow so readily abhor.

2012-04-17 10:04:18 PM
Comparing Tebow to Marinovich and Leaf is beyond stupid. Both of them played the position well but had major mental issues that manifested themselves in a complete lack of motivation. They didn't practice, didn't care and had combative personalities. Tebow is the exact opposite of that. He has terrible mechanics but is more motivated than anyone you've seen. Guy outworks and out hustles everyone and stays positive in every situation.

I'm not saying he's an NFL QB, don't take this the wrong way. It's not a pro-Tebow post, I just needed to point out the unbelievable stupidity of your comparison. Were you trolling or something?

WHAT ACCOLADES?

You people keep talking about these accolades, and yet every time you're asked to cite references you list obvious joke articles. Nobody actually thinks Tebow is a good QB. They just are amazed that somehow, despite an awful throwing motion and being incapable of playing at an NFL level for 55 minutes/game, he somehow tended to be able to do enough in the final five minutes to win. Down two scores? No problem.

Di Atribe: NO no no, you misinterpreted that Bible verse. It REALLY means that God doesn't want the hypocrites praying out in the open. If you really mean it, then that's OK.

It's pretty much the equivalent of "don't be a poser."

One translation of "practicing righteousness" is giving to charity. It seems silly to think that this verse is meant to be construed as some arcane prohibition against, say, creating foundations to build ophanges for homeless children. It seems to make much more sense when read with regard to intent. Don't work the soup kitchen so you can brag about it later. Context really helps.

Another thing that helps is Greek. Matthew 6:6 is προσεύχομαι, prosuechomai, the root of which has a connotation of "to wish for." What Tebow does is more like ὁμολογέω, homologeo, which is to praise or celebrate, and profess or declare openly oneself the worshiper of one.
