The wife started a new job Feb 2011. She checked exempt on her W-4. 6k tax bill. This is immediately after I spent the last year getting our credit card debt down to zero.

So I ask you fellow farkers. What should her punishment be?

My taxes are relatively simple, I e-filed them long ago and already got my little bit of a refund back.

My uncle is an owner/operator truck driver, he wound up owing 12K or so. That would suck.

2012-04-17 09:13:22 AM
I owe $18.

She should be traded in for a smarter wife

My caddy's chauffeur informs me that tax is something poor people who can't afford a good accountant have to pay on money that isn't properly invested. The only poor people I want to hear about are the people who tend to my pores at the spa.

She's already married to an idiot that can't or won't double check his taxes, then blames his wife for his own oversight. And who is 6K in debt. I'm sure the "married to" will work itself out.

Oh, punishment. Stand outside with a sign saying "I married a dumbass" all day.

The election, all elections, should be the day after Tax Day.

We owed this year... Self-employment tax and my wife not taking any taxes out of her unemployment hurt us. Paid in full and on time, though.

On the plus side, we're not worried about health insurance for the time being... Thanks Commonwealth Care!

You should praise her for not giving the government a loan, and put 6k in high-grade corporate debt for next year, dope.

You're married....if it was your girlfriend or mistress you may have a point, but if her finances are in ANY WAY tied to mine, then you're damn right I'll make sure hers are correct too.

This. I paid 4K but came out close to even, including the penalty, once you factor in the interest that money earned plus the satisfaction of holding on to the cash. Would underpay again.

If you share finances, you share responsbility. So you're telling me you 1) aren't married, but 2) you are white-knighting her enough to pay her 6K on your card. That tells me 3) you'll accept liability blindly without fact-checking.

Either you did not know ahead of time about the W-4, in which case you have no leg to stand on, or you are paying off her tax bills after she messed up, but want some kind of credit from the internet for doing it. Sorry. You blindly accepted the liability, now enjoy repaying down your card.

In a few years you can look back and see it as a cheap lesson, or you can see it as the first warning sign.

Have your fun being a dick to people on the internet. I know the tax code says my wifes tax burden is mine too so I get to eat this shiat sammich.

I may not be married, but I know how to tell my girlfriend she's farking up her taxes without treating her like a child. Maybe you should work on your communication skills.

There are several days every year where I thank an entire roster of assorted deities that I no longer make my meager living by being a TV reporter anymore.

Today is one of those days.

Until you've done virtually the same live shot at 5PM, 5:30PM, 6PM, 7PM, 10PM, 11PM and 11:29PM talking about the "crazy crowds and lines" and doing street-beef interviews with toothless yokels who spew weapons-grade retard into the microphone about "I'm done makin' sure them there gub'mint yahoos don' get my hard-earned money until the last possible second" and answer my follow-up question with "Well, ah'm gettin' 'bout two grand back as a refund. Gonna take the kids what for to Dollywood." you truly cannot appreciate how nice it is to have gone into the business of 9-5 air-conditioned pure evil.

Are you suggesting he should have been holding her hand at her new job while she filled out her paperwork, and then looked through it before she handed it to her manager or HR or whatever? Or demanded to see her check stubs to make sure taxes were being taken out?

Where is this perfect woman that you know that would take kindly to that?

Am married, 12 yrs. Its your liability, what you do with it is up to you. Most people that can't follow instructions hire professionals to do it for them. $166 at HR Block instead of $6000 is cheap insurance.

You're welcome.

Most couples discuss for the minute a year it takes to get it right what they put on their W-2. "Are you taking the deductions this year?" That kind of thing. At least most that don't wind up owing $6000 in under-withholding. Or, you pay someone to get it right. Or, you ask questions of people that know, like your parents (*maybe*) or a tax accountant.

You're welcome.

Stop killing the messenger. I could just sit here and laugh at your learning curve.

Umm, you still pay the taxes whether it's early or late. HRB, with due respect, will not save you $6000.

Thought I was fine until I got audited by the DC unemployment office because they screwed something up. Just when I had relaxed from procrastinating on doing my taxes for 4 1/2 months (which took 10 mins and was free)

Divide taxes owed by total income. That's what you actually paid.

/ 19.6% this year.

Two years ago I somehow owed $20,000 in taxes. Last year and this year I owed nothing. I have no idea what was different, but I assume everything's squared away ok, cause that's what the nice Jewish fellow I pay to do my taxes tells me. Also, for anyone considering having kids for the tax break, don't. My little baby only saved me $1,000 this year, and we've spent well more than that on baby gear so far. What, do they expect us to procreate for the sheer joy of bringing new life into the world or something? that's a poor incentive.
