You mean the man who murdered dozens of teenagers might just be.... not right in the head? The hell you say.

It's a shame this raving lunatic gets a soap box but at least he'll not be a free man ever again.

I just don't get how even a crazy man can go from "Muslims are terrorists so let's not let them into our country", to "kill children to stop multiculturalism". Usually there's a thread of logic somewhere to follow, even for crazies, just I can't seem to find it in this case.

He reminds me quite a bit of McVeigh actually. Different `cause' but same line of thinking, that they are collateral damage in some war they believe to be fighting. Appears to have no remorse, perhaps even some twisted sense of pride in his actions. Though Anders deliberately targeted children, McVeigh knew children would likely be killed but didn't specifically attack them, so there's that difference.

Ultimately, there may be little sense in trying to analyze the thought patterns of a madman.

Hitler was a madman. When he stole that cow, and his friend tried to make it with the cow. I want to party with that cowboy.

Thats just it. I'm sure if you dig into his life you'll see pretty much any new junkie freeper type; owns land, prospers off a system he now feels is under dire threat from "outsiders," then feels he has to "Defend" said system no matter what the cost. Unfortunately for those kids he didn't just stop at making illiterate signs and voting for extreme rightist candidates.

The beauty of our modern system isn't how he's insane, its how exactly alike he is to thousands of others, who somehow today aren't out applying their own insanity quite as fatally, not unless you count bombing abortion doctors or trying to murder congresspeople.

He identified as his enemy the "cultural Marxists" who he said had destroyed Norway by using it as "a dumping ground for the surplus births of the third world". Claiming Norwegians would be a minority in their own capital "within five years", he blamed liberal politicians for bringing about Norway's demise with "feminism, quotas ... transforming the church, schools".

So he's in the tea party.

It makes as much sense as believing that Hitler went after the Catholics along with the Jews, gays, Jehovah's Witnesses (which is what they're teaching kids these days).

/I'll be waiting for the posts now explaining that that really happened.

I don't want to endorse what he did, since I disagree with his politics, his methods, and the concept of revolutionary nationalism in general, but the guy had a point: Kill the older ones and they become martyrs for the younger generation, but if you kill the younger generation then the ideology will die out.

Part of the problem is that the communists (European and Russian alike) have had a history of declaring political enemies to be mentally ill, so that they wouldn't have to treat their politics as legitimate. I think it's arrogant to dismiss motivations and actions which we find abhorrent and incomprehensible from our own perspective as the work of crazy idiots.

Personally I think it's wrong to conflate evil with insanity, and by dismissing evil as insanity we're ignoring the problem rather than dealing with the fact that there are people out there increasingly willing to turn to violence to combat what they perceive as a problem. If we don't deal with them politically, they'll deal with us violently.

It's not as simple as that. Start with the Reichskonkordat and go from there. Catholics may not have been swept up by the Gestapo, but they were only tolerated so long as they paid lip-service to the Reich. I'm sure members of White Rose would have something to say about your claim that Catholics escaped persecution.

Millions of Catholics died by the Nazi extermination program, mostly through their misfortune of living in Poland in the late '30s. Had Poland been a Presbyterian country, it would have been millions of Presbyterians. The Jews had the special distinction of being killed for their location AND religion.

Brevik's methods make sense from a historical perspective (kill the young liberals to cull the liberal herd), even if his methods and motivations seem more like the ideas of a PCP junkie. Sure: the culture I want to protect is the one in which middle-schoolers are butchered en masse out of political paranoia. Ahh, heritage!

Yes and no. The RCC did smuggle an encyclical into Germany that was read from every pulpit on Palm Sunday 1937. It was called "Mit brennender Sorge" and directly criticized Nazi ideology. It was surely too little too late, but it was a direct attack on the legitimacy of Hitlers Regime.

Yes, evil and insanity are different, however, I don't think that you can deal effectively with evil politically. Norway is a very free country and this man had every opportunity to push his views politically the poitical parties that he backs were unable to satisfy his desire for change so he resorted to violence. McVeigh, abortion clinic bombers and the left-wing radicals of the late 60s early 70s are not satisfied by the changes that can be made in the political system and resort ot violence to bypass the system. I'm not a law and order type of guy but people who step out of the political system and use violence to push their agenda need to be dealt with by the criminal justice system very harshly. We also need to dial back the rhetoric in the political arena and deal with each other with more respect so as not to give comfort to these evil people. Barak Obama is not a facist or a communist, the Republicans are not going to throw grandma out on the street.
