It happens quite a bit in rural China too. Industrial pollution is a major factor, but often the pregnant women get little or no prenatal care, have inadequate diets, Things like folic acid (B-complex vitamin) deficiency during the early months of pregnancy can lead to major birth defects, especially neural tube defects (new window).

You're going to see a lot of this in the United States if EPA regulations are rolled back anymore, or the EPA dissolved completely if the Republicans can get their way.

I'd say it was more a result of the close relation of the parents. The article says they are cousins (though not the degree).

That's a distinct possibility. There were some lawsuits in Oregon back in the late 70s/early 80s regarding dioxin use causing birth defects in children.

Arsenic. (new window)

In the second half of the 20th century when all the aid orgs went over to help "develop", the highest priority was a well. Typically these areas drank surface water which was highly prone to contamination with microorganisms. Esp since there was rarely a sewer system and people just crapped in the open or dumped it into a river. A well seemed like the obvious, perfect solution.

But the geology of these areas was often not appropriate for a well, not the particular types and places of wells they dug. They ended up supplying communities and farming with water than is heavily arsenic-contaminated. Even the food grown there may contain arsenic.

Well, AFAIK arsenic isn't a recognized cause of parasitic triplets. But, it can't be good for a pregnant mother.

The article is full of wtf. It also says: He tried to clarify that the baby did not have six legs - he had two legs and the other four belonged to the other twin. As if the other twin having four legs makes any sense. But of course it was born prematurely.... and just left four of its legs behind....

From this I can only conclude the conjoined twin split in two and the top half which was not attached to the other twin was born prematurely and the bottom half with the extra pair of legs got left behind.

It seems more likely that the babies got started as triplets (which would explain the 6 legs), but what do I know?

While this is tragic I am sure that if the baby had that many arms he would be considered a deity.

First cousins only have a 2.5%±1.5% (according to a 1998 study) higher chance of being effected by a birth defect over an unrelated couple. So, while it is possible that the cousin thing contributed to this, the chance is almost within the margin of error and, therefore, it is nearly as likely to have happened to a completely unrelated couple.

More likely, this is due to poor environment and prenatal care.

I recall hearing about a lot of funny happenings at Love Canal - miscarriages, still births, birth defects, all kinds of cancer etc. To lazy and in too much pain to look the stats or provide a link. Just saying, this is not anything new, and if the EPA is farked with like the Repubs want, we're in for a wild ride. But they will just blame it on gods will.

CSS, just remembered:

Worked with a lady who LOVED to tell people that her first cousins Tom and Belinda (both on her moms side, one belonged to a sister, the other one a brother) and that they have the most precious son ever. He looked like a live action troll doll and could not speak without dousing you in saliva. The best part-her favorite part of the story that she thought was so damn innovative: they named the kid DOUBLE SIZEMORE. YES. Go ahead, re-read if you need to.

Looks like parasite twinning. Probably 2 of the legs are actually arms and just being called legs due to position/deformity.

LOL- an incredibly true story that no amount of mind bleach will ever erase. Two cousins met, married, and had a son, Thought it would be awesome to name him Double Sizemore on account that they were both Sizemore's and he was indeed 2 Sizemores in one, hence...Double Sizemore.
