Um subby? Cigar box guitars are a time honored tradition, they've been around for ages. This qualifies as win, or since we don't have a win tag, Hero, for Guitar World.

I can't afford a box of cigars, so I tried it with a Marlboro Reds crush-proof box. Didn't sound too good.

I'm getting a Troll vibe, but anyways Cigar box guitars are pretty cool. Last one I played around with sounded somewhere between an acoustic and a banjo.

I saw and loved that move (It Might Get Loud) but I also immediately thought that Jack White resembled a Johnny Depp character.

//Jimmy Page looked like a 21st-century Beethoven, which just made him cooler, if that was possible.

I think you misunderstand my point. Jack White comes across in that film as someone who is noticeably trying to degrade his music, instruments, production, etc, for whatever reason. (Snark at hipsters is the lack of bacon and coffee talking.....)
As a musician I have never seen the point in that. Yes, I've got a crappy old bit of plywood and old Peavey Bandit at one of my drummer's houses that I rehearse with, but I wouldn't dream of gigging or recording with it.

To me, it's the difference between a fine Chinese porcelain cup and a deliberately rough and rustic Japanese cup.

I think that the Japanese style is far more interesting and beautiful.

That's a fair point, and don't get me wrong, I'm not a purist by any stretch of the imagination - I'd listen to Robert Johnson over Dream Theater any day of the week. Making do with what you have and creating art with soul is not the same as having the talent and means to do things better but deliberately choosing to do it the "wrong" way to give the appearance of retro, vintage, handmade, call it what you will.

Well, that's exactly what the Japanese style is. They could easily make their cups as "perfect" as the Chinese style (Look what they can do with swords), but they deliberately "downgrade" them.
They have to be careful though not to go too far into self parody, where their creations just looks ridiculous. I'm sure you agree this also applies to music.

It's a fine line, but I'm walking it!

That's not fair - annoying hipster or not, White is a decent and improving guitar player. If he works real hard, and practices a lot, maybe someday Ry Cooder will let him tune one of his guitars for him.

Yes, but you specifically said that it wasn't something a musician should aspire to, and yet, you know Jack White's name. Does he know yours? I don't particularly care for his style, either, but he's obviously doing something right, and I'm really not sure who made you the arbiter of what a musician should aspire to, anyway. I mean, if you don't want to do things the way someone else does them, fine, that's your business, but why not allow others the same freedom?

I'm sure Jack White doesn't have the first clue who I am (nor do you for that matter) but does the fact that he's sold more records than I have invalidate my opinion somehow? I'm not going to bother prefacing every statement I make with disclaimers about how this is only my opinion, qualifying that with whatever credentials I can supply to enable some random tool on the internet to slot me into an imagined hierarchy of people who are allowed to comment on certain things.

You did, telling people what they can and can't aspire to. You didn't just "comment" on what he was doing (and I never said you either were or were not allowed to do anything, you hysterical drama queen), you didn't just offer your preference or your personal alternative, you made a blanket assertion about what other people should do based on your personal preference. Sorry you're touchy about being called out on your authoritarian wet dreams.

Yet you're the one taking offence and resorting to calling me hysterical and authoritarian. You're clearly confusing "should" and "must", and not comprehending the word "aspire" properly. You aspire to greater things, not lesser things. If I was baking bread, would I wrong in saying that a baker should not aspire to make his bread taste like cardboard?

You only said "should" because you don't have the power to enforce "must". Your phrasing still betrays you. I called you hysterical because you acted hysterical, and authoritarian because you posted an authoritarian post. Apparently you have a problem with people using words as the dictionary defines them, as well as with being creative in whatever way they want to be. Again you substitute your value judgments and preferences as to what constitutes "greater" and "lesser" and again you believe that everyone must think the same way you do. What YOU clearly don't understand is that what you might believe to be greater, someone else might believe to be lesser, and what you might believe to be lesser, someone else might believe to be greater. You also don't understand that people get to decide for themselves what they wish to aspire to, not be told what to aspire to by some no-talent hack who obviously can't make it in his chosen profession and thus vents his vitriol on those more successful than he. You're like a baker who doesn't like the taste of sourdough bread and thus struts around proclaiming that sourdough bread is bad and bakers shouldn't aspire to bake great sourdough bread. That's your preference, great. You don't want to bake sourdough, great. Don't do it. But if someone else likes it and wants to bake it, there's no reason why your preference against it should influence them in any way. But keep thinking it should. You're entertaining.
