(Huffington Post)   Tea Party speaker: "We will not be silenced by f*ggots." Clearly this is a tea-party colloquialism that somehow relates to economic issues. Perhaps he meant "Keynesian acolytes"   (huffingtonpost.com) divider line 503

serial_crusher: If homosexuality and taxes don't have anything to do with each other, why did the gay group feel the need to interrupt the tea party's tax related protest?

There are better ways to tell another group to shut up and let you speak. Stooping to the level of saying what this dude said, does absolutely nothing for your cause and, in fact, damages it. It's one thing to hate taxes, it's one thing to be angry that another unaffiliated group is attempting to silence you, it's just down right stupid to stoop to that level of dialogue.

"I WILL NOT BE SILENCED" works far better than what that douchenozzle said.

/and is far more to the point.

Their little tea party event was honoring Scott Lively, the guy who pretty much single-handedly managed to convince Uganda that a kill-the-gays bill would be a good idea.

I've always wondered, what's the point with the fasces anyway? Why would you want to wrap your axe handle in a bundle of dowels? It looks extremely uncomfortable to wield, not to mention heavy, and one good jolt would wrench the axe handle free.

coco ebert: gilgigamesh: violentsalvation: By calling gay folks "f*ggots" you have ensured that I will not listen to what you have to say. So yes, person by person, one pair of ears at a time, you are silencing yourself.

Seriously, the only people I ever hear refer to "fags" or "faggots" are gay dudes riffing on each other.

I imagine after this guy let loose with his little tirade one gay dude in the audience rolled his eyes and purred to his buddy, "My God, will you get a load of her."

Strange. As a friend of many friends of Dorothy, I've never heard anyone utter that word in jest or to rib one another. It's mos def a slur.

Just because it's a slur doesn't mean people never use it in jest or to rib one another. That's a pretty classic thing that a group does with slurs, attempting to claim the word in the hopes of reducing the sting.
For example. Columnist Dan Savage originally wanted his 'Savage Love' Column to be entitled 'Hey F@ggot,' and that was indeed used as the form of address in it for years.

I agree with you that a group should be able to have a rally without getting shouted down by the opposition. Yeah, protesting in part of free speech, but while I disagree with the Tea Party, they have as much of a right to hold an unmolested rally as pro-gay marriage advocates.

On the other hand, the tea party has anti-gay elements despite all of their rhetoric about taxes.

http://www.irehr.org/issue-areas/tea-party-nationalism/tea-party-news - and-analysis/item/405-massachusetts-tea-party-patriots-rally-to-featur e-anti-gay-activist-scott-lively

Traditionally rallies about depriving another group of their rights is a cause for protest. Its a balancing act-- the tea party people can talk about taxes all they want, and then get booed when anti-gay stuff is mentioned.
