The Alamo Curator and a preservationist will try to determine how serious the damage from the acids in the urine was to the wall of the Alamo, and to decide how best to remove the visible stain.

What the hell was that guy drinking; and/or has The Alamo Curator never heard of a garden hose?

Somehow, I can't help but think that if urine on the walls were that great a danger to the place it would have been pretty gone after Santa Ana's troops over-ran it

Skr: Shrine of Texas Liberty? They really call the Alamo that?

It was a mission church at the time of the "battle of the Alamo." As a historic site, it's rather unimpressive. It's just a dinky little building in downtown San Antonio. When I first visited it, I began to question if a lot of what I now know to be a Disney version of America history, was pure bullshiat.

And Texas liberty? We annexed Texas from Mexico and told the Mexicans and indian tribes there to fark off. Well, by fark off, I mean kill, kill, kill.

Yes, and you don't fark around with the Alamo. Texans will pitch a major hissy fit. I lived there for five years, and it really is a shrine. When I saw it for the first time, the first thing I thought was, "That's it? This is what all the fuss is about?" But I didn't say it aloud!

There really isn't much to the Alamo. That's part of the reason it's so impressive that they held it for 13 days.

Fun fact: Santa Anna claimed it was a small skirmish and only claimed 70 deaths. There is still some debate about how many were killed.

The Goliad Massacre (new window) happened after the Alamo.
Then the Battle of San Jacinto (new window) happened after Goliad.

Each event was basically a direct result of the previous event. Santa Anna was captured at San Jacinto, and a few weeks later he signed the treaty that dictated that the Mexican Army leave the area, leading directly to Texas independence... cheers

It's true. Texas is a big icon of the USA in other countries. I would bet that more Aussies, Euros, and Japanese would recognize the Alamo than Americans.

The reason it's so "tiny" is that the rest of the compound was destroyed by Santa Anna's troops. It was originally a larger walled fort with other buildings. The church is all that was left afterwords.

Jackierabbit, you really want to look at your history again. Texas seceded from Mexico and fought a war of independance. It was its own country for a period of time. Texas then joined the United States voluntarily.

It's extremely disrespectful to urinate on any building, but especially the Alamo. Part of it is still a church not to mention that the entire site is a massive graveyard where the bodies of not only 185 Texians but also almost 600 Mexicans were burned or buried.

It's more a Texas memorial than a U.S. one since they were fighting for Texan independence. The entire place is a shrine to Texas liberty and is a military memorial. People that urinate on the Alamo are no different than if someone were to urinate on a memorial gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery.

Wasn't when I was there years ago. Sure, there are businesses, but nothing available to the public at large that I can recall. That was like 12 years ago though when I was in Air Force training, and I was pretty much drunk all the time.

Now that I think about it, Is it even near the riverwalk? I remember the Mall, and the smoke shop at the riverside entrance, and some of the bars, and that's about all I'm clear on.

/was quite drunk

Santa Anna's troops re-garrisoned it and fortified it, the walls were dismantled for the stone 4 years later.

No, they weren't. If you can find remains on the grounds, please tell someone.

Hell, most of the original site is covered by streets and other buildings. The chapel isn't the entire compound.

JackieRabbit: We annexed Texas from Mexico

No. Texas was an independent republic when It joined the union.

There's a common misperception that this fact allows people to fly the Texas flag at the same height as the US flag, but no other state flag. In fact, any state's flag can be flown at the same height as the US flag (if on different poles obviously). If on the same pole, any state's flag must be below the US flag. cheers
