Honestly, even if the amber alert system is being run by some old racist white dude from a 1960s movie about southern Louisiana, it's hard to really give a fark since the Amber alert system is pretty much entirely useless.

There have been about 500 recoveries in the last 10 years. The Verizon wireless alert distributor alone issues 250 alerts per year. So even if they were the only issuer of alerts (extremely generous, since there are loads of local alert distributors) that's a recovery rate of at best one in five.

By contrast, the majority of abductions are family abductions, and the recovery rate on those is 94% (Link). So while I'm not sure what the recovery rate for child abduction in general is, I'm suspecting something higher than one in five. What I'm saying here is that the cops aren't really significantly any more likely to find a missing kid with an alert out than they are through normal police work. All the system does is burn some money and make people feel like something is being done, it's dollars for media appeasement essentially.

It seems like the delay was because there wasn't any custody order in place specifying who was to have the kids and when. Without that the father legally has the same rights to the kids as the mother. So I am assuming that they put out the Amber alert on the kids when they were able to legally put in a missing persons report on the father.

But what gets me about this is that the father threw the mother out of the car and then led the cops on a high speed chase before disappearing with the kids. You would think that him taking the kids with that much violence surrounding the situation would warrant an Amber Alert because a normal reasoning person might think that because of the violence he exhibited in the taking of the kids, he may be a danger to them.

I am not an expert on amber alerts, but I believe there are strict guidelines as to who qualifies for an amber alert, and this did not meet them. IIRC the child needs to both have been abducted, and be in danger of harm. Even if he was a total bastard and a danger to them, because he did not abduct them they don't qualify. So yes, bad, bad Daddy. The police should have been looking for him very hard. But this was not an Amber alert situation, because it didn't meet the guidelines for such.

The father didn't even kidnap them. Is there something out there that says the mother had custody? From what I could tell, the mother and father were not even serarated.

This is the whole sky is falling mentality America is becoming well known for. It said he threw the mother out of the car (who even knows what that means - people get thrown out of bars with no physical contact at all) and then fled police. A speeding father is not a good reason for an Amber Alert. They had no reason to believe that the man, who seemingly had legal custody of the children was going to hurt them once he had evaded police.

Amber Alerts can also cover parental fark-ups. Case in point--last Xmas Eve on the outskirts of my "gentrifying" neighborhood one junkie killed two others in a known crackhouse. A brand new SUV was conveniently running at the curb across the street, and the shooter jumped in and took off. However, in the back seat was contained one (1) toddler. Not only one (1) toddler, but a Nancy Grace Special--a Pretty White Toddler^TM. Bam--the Amber Alert was issued, making a crappy but not unusual RVA situation into a CNN Headline Event. There was much media and online handwringing and PRAYERS FOR KAIDEN and crap like that. The SUV with the kid was found a couple of hours later in an apartment complex parking lot about a mile from the crackhouse. While it was going on, the first question I had was why the hell any kid would be left in a running brand new SUV in an area well-known for crack and hookers and crime? And how did the cops get the shooter's name so fast? Police reported that the kid's mother was "cooperating" and had apparently been at the crackhouse "dropping off Xmas presents." Translation--she was either dealing or buying, excellent chance she knew the shooter, either forgot the kid was in the car (if she was buying this is a distinct possibility) or was told that the shooter would only go so far so he could get a ride out of there, cops told her they could bust her for dealing/buying and child neglect or she could give them the shooter's name and they would make it like an abduction and let her go since double murder > drugs and dumb child handling. Gee, wonder what my choice would be? Either way, once the kid was found that was the last that was heard about the abduction--the mom didn't go on TV praising the cops or the people looking as is the norm in AA cases where the kid is found.

Amber alerts are a joke. No one pays them any real attention. AT&T was sending me Amber alerts as text messages to my cell phone for a couple of months a few years back. I guess they were testing the waters to see how this would work. But customers were pissed, so it stopped. I didn't need to know that some girl went missing from Hoboken, was last seen when her dad picked her up from school, and was believed to be with her dad in either Nashville, Charlotte, Birmingham, Atlanta or Tampa.

From the Martin-Zimmerman case. The "bad" guy, Zimmerman has a white father and a Hispanic mother. Since he does not "appear" white, the press describes him as a "white Hispanic" because a white guy killing a black guy is news and a Hispanic guy killing a black guy is Saturday in Florida. Plus, it's difficult to get all outraged at a Hispanic guy.

Legally, the father had the rights to the children so there was nothing they could do. Amber Alerts are only for missing children. Everyone knew where they were. They were legally with their father as he hadn't lost rights to them yet. You can't just issue Amber Alerts for the hell of it and race had nothing to do it.
