I thought that guns were somewhat legal in Norway depending on having a license and other factors. Or am I thinking of another Scandinavian country? Cause I seem to remember there were adults on the island not just kids. And if only one of them had been armed maybe they would have been able to take him down before the death toll got so high.

Of course, none of that really matters now anyway.

As for his 'self defense' plea, I read the article but they don't explain why he said this. I can only imagine that judging from what he has previously said he means self defense in a greater sense rather than an immediate threat. It seems that he was under the illusion that unless he took this action, many more foreigners would be allowed into Norway and that Norwegians like him would be in danger. So I guess in his mind he was taking this action to preserve his own life.

Unless he really did just believe that the kids represented an actual and immediate threat to his life.

Either way, the guys mind is clearly unstable. There is no possible way that any sane person would be in that situation and believe that killing those people was an act of self defense.

hinten: I haven't paid for TotalFark in a while but this was the best headline out of the litter? Really?
Even I submitted something funnier, 'Zimmerman defense, something, something...'

Come on!

Same here:

In a move that would make George Zimmerman blush, the Norway killer of 77 people is claiming self-defense

If you look at the stats, some people have 200-500 green lights a month. Me thinks that it's not solely based on who has the best headline.

The disclaimer says that you'll have about a 5% success rate. My success rate so far is about 8%, but I doubt that those with thousands of green lights are submitting thousands of links a day. Maybe they are, who knows.

In fact, I want him to die very painfully and very slowly.

I wasn't trying to say anything like that. Just stating my own feelings.

The quotes were more for the lulz since it seems pretty much everyone went to the same place there.

MindStalker: Millennium: DontMakeMeComeBackThere: Wow, he is so screwed. Wait, this is Europe, so he'll get what, 12 years or something?

IIRC, the maximum in Norway is 21 years. Not really sure where they came up with that number.

Could they give him 21 years per person. 22*71 would put him in there for life.

Unfortunately no. Norway does not have the option of trying each death separately, unlike the US. There's one trial for the whole event, with a single sentence. However, see above comment about keeping him in through psychiatric evaluations.

It's not like jail in Norway is even a punishment. Why bother pleading at all? You'll just get sent to a resort either way.

rudemix: In rare cases, and this would be one, he should have been summarily executed on the spot. There is no need to hear why he did what he did, the evidence is beyond conclusive, and there is no punishment, or rehabilitation for a man who murders 70+ children. Immediate death should have been the example set. Now this tool gets a world stage for who knows how long to spout off his bullshiat which could encourage more people to attempt the same type of thing.

No way that would work. Too many world leaders would get really nervous about a policy like that.

IIRC, the maximum in Norway is 21 years. Not really sure where they came up with that number.

The max is 21 years. However, if at the end of the time a psychiatric evaluation results in seeing the criminal as a danger to the public if released, they can keep him for another 5 years in a secure psychiatric ward in stead, to be repeated as needed.

It's unlikely that Breivik ever gets back out. One way or another.

is that 21 years per person murdered? or 21 total?
so basically if you kill 1 or 100 the max is 21 years? wtfark is up with that?

Why be right when you can be sarcastic?

21 years which will almost certainly be extended to a full life sentence, according to the BBC.

That's why Breivik's so keen to be assessed as sane. Assessed as insane, his 'political statement' can be dismissed as a lunacy, and he can be institutionalised and medicated into imbecility for life; sane, and he's eligible for parole after 10 years. There might be very little chance of release but that's not the same as no chance of release. The thing is he might be right - who's to say in 40 years a parole board loaded with people who weren't even alive when the murders happened and with good intentions but little sense won't cut him loose thinking "What harm can a 73-year old do?"

Then they'll find out.

epoc_tnac: markfara: He felt threatened, and he stood his ground.

In his sick brain, that is actually exactly what he did. Too bad that the threat is imaginary and that 70 people had to die as a result of it.

Even if it's not imaginary (a reach, I know), it's certainly no more than figurative.

From my understanding Norway doesn't have a "life without parole" option, but they can keep denying his parole, which would make it an effective life sentence.

Norwegian jails are much nicer than most of the ones in the US. However treating criminals like humans is not only good for those who will eventually leave (and unlikely be "institutionalized" by their stay), but maybe he'll actually grow to regret what he did. If you throw him into a dark hole he'll just turn inward and ignore the world outside of them - it was bad before, this confirms it. But if he's shown that humanity has worth there's a change he'll come to truly regret what he did, and that seems like a far more appropriate and effective punishment.

Trayvon attacked Zimmerman because he felt threatened by him, just like Brevik attacked his victims because he felt threatened by them.

The only difference is the means they had available to them to "fight back." So, if you support Trayvon's "right" to fight back against Zimmerman, you should also support Brevik's right to "fight back" against his political opposition. Or, if you support Trayvon and oppose Brevik, then you should at least be honest enough to admit you're really trying to eliminate guns, not stand up for any sort of justice.

/and if anyone cares, I think Zimmerman has a valid self defense claim and that Brevik should DIAF
//nobody should have the legal right to turn a verbal confrontation into a physical one

This guy is getting too much publicity. We should be careful not to send the message that mass-murdering children is a way to get fame and a platform to get your manifesto heard. I'd rather he'd been denied infamy/notoriety and simply declared insane and sent to rot, alone & anonymous in a padded cell, knowing that nobody ever heard a word of his crazy bullshiat theories on multi-culturalism or whatever.

Exactly. Is there any question if a cop had put a bullet through this guy's eyes he would walk? Does it even matter really if he was crazy or "sick" or just a criminal? He killed dozens of people, just end him and move on.

Frankly, regardless of what most Christjans think, Christianity has been just as violent and radical for most of its lifetime. From the beginning, once adopted, the church forced conversions and had bloody histories of burning, killing, ostracizing, and demonizing anyone that didn't agree with/convert to their belief. Look at the Crusades, the Inquisition, the burning of witches, the conversion-by-torture of many non-christian nations...

It may be unpopular to say so, but Christianity has its own violent, bloody sects that are no different.

Humans in general will use any available excuse to exercise their violent nature and bigotry.

That's not Christainity, much like "ostracizing" and "demonizing" are not English, no matter how widely and tenaciously the perversion is embraced.

I don't need a news source. I lived in muslims countries for more than three years (Indo and Egypt) where support for Osama was widespread.

But I get that most people don't have the opportunity to realy see how things are outside their country, you might want to start with Pew polls on the subject if you are really interested in learning.
