I never smoked weed too often in the past, but when I did, I definitely notice some degradation in my mental abilities days afterward. Never much liked the stuff.

Are you sure you're not high right now?

Your statement makes little sense.

It's COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS to make a blanket statement that people who smoke pot are somehow worse in their jobs or unable to perform as well as those who might be perfectly sober at work. While there are some jobs that require a certain requirement of speed and acuity, there are millions of other jobs that don't have the same types of needs for the specific safety requirements, where there isn't fast-spinning heavy machinery or driving involved, so comparing one to the other is like comparing apples that aren't oranges to...comparing oranges and apples because they're not the same considerations as the, um...same considerations as a job that might need...a job that would need a person who was...

Crap, I forgot what I was talking about.

You're a writer. Who cares?

Now, if you were a busdriver, weed could definiitely affect your work, but it is not clear if this would be a good thing or a bad thing.

"Can weed affect my work?"

Yes. If you test positive for it during your pre-employment drug screening, you will not be hired. If you are subsequently drug-tested during your employment, and you test positive for weed, you will be fired for cause. That means that you not only lose your income, but you will be unable to collect unemployment.

Marijuana has other risks, too: It contains more carcinogens than tobacco and can cause the same respiratory issues - possibly even cancer.

Bzzt wrong.

In conclusion, while both tobacco and cannabis smoke have similar properties chemically, their pharmacological activities differ greatly. Components of cannabis smoke minimize some carcinogenic pathways whereas tobacco smoke enhances some. Both types of smoke contain carcinogens and particulate matter that promotes inflammatory immune responses that may enhance the carcinogenic effects of the smoke. However, cannabis typically down-regulates immunologically-generated free radical production by promoting a Th2 immune cytokine profile. Furthermore, THC inhibits the enzyme necessary to activate some of the carcinogens found in smoke. In contrast, tobacco smoke increases the likelihood of carcinogenesis by overcoming normal cellular checkpoint protective mechanisms through the activity of respiratory epithelial cell nicotine receptors. Cannabinoids receptors have not been reported in respiratory epithelial cells (in skin they prevent cancer), and hence the DNA damage checkpoint mechanism should remain intact after prolonged cannabis exposure. Furthermore, nicotine promotes tumor angiogenesis whereas cannabis inhibits it. It is possible that as the cannabis-consuming population ages, the long-term consequences of smoking cannabis may become more similar to what is observed with tobacco. However, current knowledge does not suggest that cannabis smoke will have a carcinogenic potential comparable to that resulting from exposure to tobacco smoke.

It should be noted that with the development of vaporizers, that use the respiratory route for the delivery of carcinogen-free cannabis vapors, the carcinogenic potential of smoked cannabis has been largely eliminated [47,48].

Sorry. I didn't read the article and assumed that writer meant "writer" and not "correspondent".

I will change my tune.

You're writing to CNN for advice, dimwit. What do you think? Is weekend weed affecting your work? I'll spell it out for you: C-N-N. You're stoned now, aren't you?

Sounds like it was hash rather than weed. Or you're very impressionable.

Then again, what do I know? I never smoked. Except for collateral damage, of course. Sometimes if you didn't want to breathe pot smoke, you had to go outdoors. That's why smart people are atheists. The Christians freeze to death in freshmen year.

I'm 99% sure one of the women who take care of my toddler at day care smokes in the off hours. Possibly pre-work, I'm not sure.

But she doesn't do it at work, and if she's more relaxed during the day...it doesn't bother me.

I'd rather have a relaxed person than someone who gets pissed off easily and yells at my child.

I work in the technical field (computer systems) and I find weed to actually help me. I don't smoke at work, obviously, but I do almost constantly once I'm at home. It's a great way to unwind and relax after a long day. It helps me sleep well and recharge before another day at the office.

I'm not sure I could do it without the weed.

plus it should be noted that nobody smokes 30-40 joints in a day but there are many smokers who smoke 2+ packs everyday. Plus I've never known a cigarette smoker who only smokes one or two cigarettes on the weekend but, at least in my experience, that's fairly common among pot smokers

Different drugs effect people differently. I can smoke a lot of weed and be totally productive. My days off include: wake up smoke, start laundry, do dishes, clean the whole house, go for a bike ride, and then video games and make dinner. This is a normal day off and I pretty much smoke all day. At my last job it was a pretty miserable environment and I smoked a lot before work and on breaks to stop myself from saying something snide and losing that job (got promoted twice). At a much better job, I just smoke when I get home.

/coffee and cigarettes turn me into a crazy woman. Had a boss ask me to never drink coffee at work before.

For me it's the opposite. It makes me slow down and be more careful. I prefer doing my carpentry or other manual labor that way, and end up with better results. When sober I'm more impatient and less methodical and tend to make more mistakes.

People who smoke weed regularly are losers. I am not talking about experimentation when you're a teen or in college, or for actual medical needs (cancer patients, glaucoma, etc.), but if you continue to smoke that shiat for recreational purposes (as well with drinking everyday) you are a grade A moron and more than likely not doing anything special with your life.

Might as well wake up and crack your head with a hammer every morning instead, because weed makes you retarded ("whoa man, nu uh"...yeah huh, hippy). seriously look at someone who doesn't smoke the cess vs some cheech and chonger burn out - you can totally tell with is worth a fark and who is a drain on society. In fact, every person I have ever met who smokes weed cant even look you straight in the eye. It's weird...it's like marijuana makes you into a shifty-eyed punk biatch.

Yeah it can. You walk in Monday morning and there's your boss. And he's got one of those little plastic cups in his hand. So you decide to give up a sample right then and there. You whip it out, aim for the cup and let fly. Only the boss is being a prick because he's jumping around yelling and screaming. He thinks there isn't anyway you're going to get the 2/3 full in that specimen jar but he doesn't know you filled up on coffee and beer this morning.

In spite of all his hi-jinx, you hit the 2/3 mark with a nice foamy finish. You say "Remember, I get ten extra points for hitting a moving target, 20 for color and another twenty for the foam. That score should cover anything you might find."

And it affects you because you thought you saw a specimen jar but it was actually just the boss' favorite coffee cup.

Depending whether you smoke a Sativa or an Indica can make a big difference. It's the difference of "my oven needs cleaned at 10 pm" and a couch slug.
