Orange you glad you don't have to waste the time to read that now?

2012-04-16 11:10:09 AM
So between this and The Avengers there's going to be an Iron Man movie every year now?

2012-04-16 11:14:59 AM
Well, since the Chinese are ultra-sensitive about any negative portrayal of their culture (see Red Dawn redux), it stands to reason that the Mandarin will not be the villain in the next film

I think it's just as likely to mean that the Mandarin is going to be revised into a North Korean. Or maybe a Tibetan. Or possibly Taiwanese.

I want these people for Mandarin:

Andy Lau
Chow Yung Fat (pretty cool if he has another Curse of the Golden Flower golden armor garb, but long flowing hair)

And
Yuen Wah
www.video4asian.com
I want some Kung fu action. Mandarin is often remembered as ten ring pew pew laser, but he is a martial art master. This man I think still got it.

Some might suggest Gordon Liu..... which I don't mind yet...

In August 2011, while in To Kwa Wan performing with his band, it was reported that Liu suffered a stroke, inevitably hitting his head. It was revealed that he had partial right sided paralysis and a speech impairement as a consequence of the incident. His camp has not released additional information, and Liu had cancelled all public engagements as of March 2012.[3]

I has a sad.......Must be evil white American women feeding him fat pork or something!

A chinese villain is not a negative portrayal of their culture, a villain with bad stereo types is, and a villain using their culture as justification for their actions is.
It is trivial to set up the mandarin so they have absolutely no grounds for complaint.

Christ. Don't get me wrong, I like comic book movies in certain doses but Christ. Weren't people sort of "meh" about Iron Man 2 anyway?

I know, I know. I don't have to watch it but can't they make way for other, more obscure comic book movies? It's been at least 18 years since the last Spider-Man or Superman movie. They could try revisiting those niche properties.

I'm excited for Iron Man III since Shane Black is involved and they're supposed to be a lot more standalone this time now that Avengers is done.

IIRC, the secondary villain in IM1 was supposed to be the Mandarin. His terrorist army was called the ten rings.

Yeah, I'm not sure that a Chineese production company would go ahead with The Mandarin being the bad guy.

However...

The very first issue of Iron Man that I bought was an issue where the Mandarin had kidnapped Rhodey and some of Tony's other friends and employes and was holding them hostage in China to provoke a fight with Iron Man. Before the fight, he insisted on a business meeting with Tony to work up a legal contract discussing the filming and distribution rights of the fight. So life imitating art here?

/issue ended with Tony getting shot by Kathy Dare when he got back home.
//last page was a splash page of Tony slumped against a wall with a hole in his chest and a bloody streak down the wall
///you know, back when writers knew how to tell a story to maintain sales, rather than YetAnotherCrisis or Restarting the conitunity

Iron Man 2 grossed 312 million domestic and has a 74 percent fresh rating on rotten tomatoes.

Thats hardly a 'meh'

Where this concept is that people dislike Iron Man 2, or that Iron Man 2 is some how a bad movie comes from I will never know. But given the rest of your comment maybe you are being sarcastic.

It wasn't that it was a horrible movie, it just wasn't as good as the first one. The villains were pretty weak and it was a heck of a lot slower than 1. Other than that, it was a decent movie, great tie-in with the rest of the Avengers and I liked seeing War Machine in action.

I'm excited overall for the Marvel movies. Can't wait for the Avengers.

Yeah..one whole movie a year. I mean, I can only find so much recreation time in a year. And the movies are two hours long! How am I suposed to budget that sort of time on an annual basis!

Seriously, most tv shows get 6-12 hours of content per year, and the comics came out every 30 days. 12 months is plently long enough.

Snapper Carr: Well, since the Chinese are ultra-sensitive about any negative portrayal of their culture (see Red Dawn redux), it stands to reason that the Mandarin will not be the villain in the next film

Well, this is actually one of their "bring in foreign contractors to study their methods (because we killed literally 99.9% of our technical experts in every field during the cultural revolution and it turns out educating the next generation off of stuff we looked up on the internet and magazines isn't going that well)" initiatives. Like with the civil engineering projects, they tend to give the foreign guys pretty much free reign and just take a lot of notes.

Mugato: I meant to include in my post that I know it made money, that was unavoidable no matter how bad it was. Just based on word of mouth though, I don't think it blew anyone's skirts up.

It was pretty much the same movie as Iron Man 1. Which meant that it was in fact a good movie, it's just hard to get excited about what is basically a short-turnover remake. Also the lack of Jeff Bridges was kind of unfortunate.

I was exaggerating when I said every year but if The Avengers is going to be a franchise and 3 of the individual characters are going to have their own franchises, all this shiat is going to get over-exposed pretty quick. Which is fine by me, I'm just saying.

It's cool, I wasn't responding to you.

I was merely trying to insinuate that while the consumer is certainly available to be indulged by Marvel films at a quicker rate than present, it doesn't mean that Hollywood has the ability to do the properties justice that quickly. To produce 120 pages of quality script, it usually takes about 6 months. Pre-production including casting can take 6 months too. Then the actual production can take 6 months with re-shoots. And post production can take 6 months. And if they are completely consecutive, that is 2 years. And they are almost never completely consecutive. So if bukketmaster wants complete crap, I guess shorter production time is better.
